PSN vs XBLA – We have a winner

Unfortunately since neither Sony or Microsoft release sales figures for their downloadable titles it is really difficult to see which service is the better option for developers right now.

But there are other ways to try and find usage stats and Gamasutra has been hard at work correlating these statistics.

First up we have the top 10 chart for August on the PSN.

image

The only one we can really get a reading on is Shatter which added 17 000 records to it’s leaderboard in August to come to a combined total of 47 000 players.

Over in Xbox land the stats are a little easier to come by.

image

Splosion man has added 70 000 gamers to it’s leaderboard in the month of August, TMNT Reshelled has managed to get 160 000 gamers onto it’s leaderboard in August which is a surprisingly high number for an incredibly bad game.

Trials HD was the smash hit in August though gaining 246 000 paid for users in August alone and it was only out for 3 weeks.

Close behind Trials and with only 2 weeks worth of stats we have Shadow Complex with 225 000 people on it’s leaderboard.

However Castle Crashers is the one we can use to determine if the XBLA has more sales than the PSN. Castle Crashers is over a year old now and has fallen down into 5th spot and it still had 85 000 more players added to it’s leaderboard in the month of August.

If that isn’t enough proof then we look at R-Type Dimensions, which received a price drop in the first week of August and only managed to hold onto a top 10 place for that single week. However over the month of August it added 19 000 more players to it’s leaderboard just pipping the 7th placed Shatter on the PSN leaderboards.

The incredible quality of the XBLA releases last month was unique and as such you can’t say for sure that the XBLA is the better platform for developers to target, but for the month of August it was the clear winner.

    Flamebait Friday Much?
The fact that xbox live has almost double the user base doesnt indicate anything? Or maybe psn users would rather play actual disc based games?

Think it is more with the way Microsoft advertise these games, and the ease of integration into the NXE,

When you are on the dashboard, you can just flip one
tab down, and have all the newest games and demo’s available. It makes it so much easier to see what is available for download.

well the fact that xbox live users are downloading more games is pretty much indicative of the strength of the live platform.

a percentage would’ve made for a better comparison, but seeing as the figures aren’t readily available, you have to go by sales alone

    That was mean to say:
Number of sales does NOT equal quality of service.

I never said anything about the quality of service, I said “which service is the better option for developers right now”

I personally think the XBLA store sucks, but if I was going to make a new game I know which one I would prefer it to land on

You guys should just frankly call this site Lazyxboxgamers and be done with it. You hardly ever report any proper news on Wii. Every second article takes the piss out of PS3. Frankly all of you need to grow up. Two days ago you took issue with their new slogan i mean WTF? Tried to convince us that RROD is cool because its got a 3 year warranty. Tried to convince us RROD = YLOD figures. Tried to convince us the PS3 WIFI is a piece of crap so it doesnt add value to the slim. Now trying to convince us that there is a better selection of games on Xbox live vs PSN! Seriously what a shit site. Im out!

Strange thing about a comparison of the 2 services I noted, and it may not be much, but I do feel somewhat different spending ms funny money on games than i do actually cash amounts on psn, be it that they are the same amounts some how the ms point value seems cheaper, maybe its just me, I’ll go take my medication now

I dont come here to read their uninformed biased opinions. I come here to read news. If they want to create a marketing website for MS then by all means do it but dont call it a gaming site.

I can also create a biased bullshit article for Lazygamer taking the piss out of Xbox…..

MS lacking in exlusives for X-mas.

Halo ODST and Left 4 dead 2 are glorified expansion packs being sold at full price while Forza3 is a pretender to GT5’s THRONE. Come on MS what else do you have for us this year? Clearly Uncharted, Demon Souls, Ratchet, Blue Toad Murders and GT5 will wipe the floor this holiday christmas and the Wii’s stellar lineup of games including Dead Space, Mario, Spyborgs and a host of others will relegate MS to the worst console this gen.

Its like reading an article like this agaisnt PS3 every single day its bullshit but they keep doing it. No proper previews, no Wii news but just constant bullshit PS flame baiting bullshit and high praise for all things MS. Never in my life have i seen it been said that its ok to release a defective electronic product if its got a 3 year warranty except on this site.

i agree with you in part, but there many sites i visit with questionable info, yet i still return because they offer some good reading.

there’s also the other fact that the lazy team have invested there time into providing news for this site, so they’re allowed to write what they want.
if it offends you you don’t have to read it.

    its friday 😉

Unfortunately we don’t get much Wii news sent through to us as the Wii isn’t aimed at the hardcore gamer. I have tried to change this often but unfortunately it’s not as easy as you think.

I am always on the look out for a Wii correspondent so if you have the time I would be willing to hear what you have to say.

You’re point about the lack of Xbox 360 exclusives this xmas is very valid, though you could say the same for the PS3. ODST is looking pretty decent and whether anyone likes it or not it will likely outsell Uncharted 2 and that cannot be ignored. Even though Uncharted 2 looks like the better game.

Forza 3 and GT 5 both don’t interest me, point your finger at Nick on that one 😉

When we get closer to SMG2 being released you will see a lot of it on the site.

Also as for the lack of real previews, you do realise it is really difficult to get preview code ahead of print media and international sites, we try our best though.

But in all that rant you didn’t disprove the facts listed above in relation to the games. Remember now I didn’t say the Xbox had better games, I said they sold better. There is a marked difference between the two.

    happy Friday

I guess you just proved my point. I replied to Easy that i could also write a flaimbait article about MS but it would be bullshit and immature. So what do you do? You go about dismantling a pretend article i wrote flaiming MS which was meant as a reverse example of how you constantly flame the PS3. Defending MS till your last breath hey? Do you even realize how pathetic that is? Your defending a pretend bullshit articles!!!! I give up.

    Good Friday to you!

Hi Nick, it’s Nick. I have to just come out and say that I don’t really understand your issues. We post news, lots of it and it’s unbiased and sometimes even without opinion. New demo coming, brand new trailers, details etc.

Every single time we post up news about new firmwares, new trailers for uncharted, new screenshots of Gran Turismo and all pro-PS3 stuff, it’s as if the guys like you just pretend that it isn’t there?

The next thing we get is a rant on an Xbox article, or one like this that is based on OTHER WEBSITES findings and then we are all called out as fanboys. We pass it off most of the time but I can tell you that it’s not exactly fun to put in the work every single day only to have people rock up on the site and call you a fanboy just because they feel like it.

RROD is fine because of warranty, of course not, but its worth joking about. Wifi on PS3 not worth it. Yes, because mine refuses to work properly with a D-Link router and takes around 5 minutes to connect to PSN.

We all have different experiences with different things, don’t think that because we write for this site that it makes our experiences any different to other people, we are just gamers too you know.

Shit like this breaks my heart and makes me want to stick to copying and pasting press releases instead of actually trying to make something interesting for people to read.

I am probably going to get flak for writing this comment, maybe its worth it.

As a neutral party (I am no fanboy of either console) I can say that I find this website very good in reporting both PS3 and X360 content. 99% of Xbox Owners are great people, as are 99% of PS3 owners (ok, maybe 97%) – It’s just that small percentage that loves to come around throwing words like “Bot”, “Gaystation” and other time wasting phrases around that ruins the experience for everyone.

LAZY, I love this website and I visit it many times a day but I must defend the PS3 guys to an extent here. Whilst the article is very neutral, the heading isn’t. It’s like when you go onto N4G (God I hate that site) and see articles titled “Why Microsoft has won the console war” or “Sony outsells Xbox 3 : 1 among people with higher IQs” – It’s just asking for trouble and it affects the credibility of the whole article.

If the heading invokes people to have a predetermined mindset of your attitude to something, they won’t read what you’re saying, they’ll just hunt down things to critique you on.

Just to add, I’m not saying don’t use provocative headlines. By all means, continue! It’s hilarious reading people get SO worked up over something that has NO INFLUENCE on their life whatsoever… I’m saying you can’t use such headlines and then in the comments try and defend the neutrality of the article.

Honestly I am happy to admit that I often use sensationalist headlines to draw people in, but this articles headline is pretty neutral. It states that someone won and then as you said yourself the article is pretty neutral.

People just don’t always like the answer

Agreed. There is actually nothing wrong with the content, it’s just heading stating that XBL is better than PSN which sensitive people find upsetting unfortunately. This console war is realy bringing out the worst in people.

Maybe the title should have read “XBL better option for developers” or something in that line

    Wait the heading say

PSN vs XBLA – We have a winner

and the article is about the sales of xbla games vs psn games for august. So clearly nothing in the heading say anything against either.

Just that we have a winner between the 2.

And according to the article for august xbla sold more games than psn.

Well, I’m just thinking that the current heading is referring to the two services as a whole while the article is only about sales – a small aspect of the service. It’s a bit unfair to say “we have a winner” without mentioning regarding what.

To add to that, the PS3 fans will think you claim XBL as the better services because games sell better, which isn’t necessarily true.

Now, if I take my diplomatic hat off, the people that DO find the current heading offencive is a bit sensitive and should calm down, consoles are only toys.

Put an age restriction on the articles like this

From my point of view I disagree that XBL is a better service because it’s not available locally after almost 3 years since launch and it’s not free for all. But all that is in no relation to this article

Anyway, I thought it’s Friday and anything goes :w00t:

    XBLA = Xbox Live Arcade
    XBL = Xbox Live

I was referring to the Arcade which is actually now the marketplace but no one has picked up on that typo yet.

I don’t normally comment on this whole console war thing, but since I had a shit week, and a shit day I will provide my own OPINION on whether this site is biased or not. I will say this that ever since the start of this generation the western media has given the perception that sony pushed out a product that is overpriced and overrated and does’nt provide anytging better than the 360 to justify the price point. I think alot of these sentiments may be due to Sony’s past behaviours of favouring propriety technology over the excepted norms, i.e. their storage media, there range of music players and forcing the consumer to only buy there propriety hardware.

I do think that there business model has changed in recent years and that might be due to the restructuring of the company. With the exeption of blue ray, the ps3 is pretty much open ended.

I do think that this site favour the 360 more than the ps3, but hey who really cares….both companies just want your money.

Indeed who cares, I come back to this site time and time again because I find it funny and I don’t take too much notice of who likes what as long as I know what I want.

Now if only the fanboys can show so much spirit and try to stop eskom’s 40% increase that they going otherwise none of us will be able to afford to play anything anymore…well maybe marbles. Hah I still own my collection which I won back in the day…..

I find it strange that on Top Gear, Jeremy Clarkson is free to say that he LOVES Ferraris, hates other brands, but can still do the show about all cars and have no problems about having personal preferences. Not the same with gaming it seems.

Either you love it, or you want it shot, dead, buried, exhumed, stabbed and buried again.

    I like games… :pouty:
