PS3 Slim and Xbox 360 S Launch Sales Compared Popular
   September 9th, 2010 clock image 1:45 pm

Launchkitty

Both HD consoles released newer, slimmer – and debatably, sexier – versions this generation. The PS3 slim was a sales powerhouse; Many people reluctant to pick up the PS3 (probably because they didn’t get that 2nd job) at first were happy to open their wallets for the newer, slimmer and more importantly cheaper PS3.

The Xbox 360 S, likewise, managed to provide a huge sales boost for Microsoft. while the newer console, with its upgraded networking and storage capabilities didn’t get a price decrease per se, the newer hardware did instil a bit of confidence in hesitant purchasers aware of the machine’s infamous failure rate.

Let’s take a look to see which slender machine made its way in to more homes in the weeks succeeding launch.

America

We can see that in the home of the Xbox, North America, Sales of the PS3 slim started off HUGE, then tapered off quite substantially before spiking again with the release of Uncharted 2 – and then settling quite nicely. The Xbox 360 S, on the other hand, started off slower, spiked considerably when stock became more readily available and then stabilised to similar levels as the Ps3 slim, increasing only slightly with the release of the Arcade variant of the 360 S.

Japan

LOL

EMEAA

European territories (Including the middle east and Africa) have traditionally been Sony strongholds – and that doesn’t seem to have changed at all. while the Xbox 360 S is doing decent numbers in the regions, they’re significantly overshadowed by the PS3 Slim’s sales.

Worldwide

Amalgamating the regional weekly graphs in to a worldwide graphic shows that the PS3 Slim had a significantly bigger launch than its HD rival. It did also, however have a significantly larger 2nd week drop; with both stabilising to similar levels at 7 weeks. While the PS3 slim is still ahead, this does show the power and influence of the North American market.

Worldwide_Total

Looking at total compounded figures, the PS3 slim is clearly ahead. In its first 7 weeks in stores, the PS3 slim sold around 2.2 million units – while the Xbox 360 S managed 1.8 million, a 400 000 unit difference. While you could put the disparity down to the fact that the 360 S has yet to launch in many of the EMEA regions, it is quite easy to see that the PS3 has gained in momentum and popularity – and much of that can be attributed to the slim.

Oh yeah..these charts come courtesy of VGchartz – so feel free to take them with a pinch of salt. Accompanied with a slice of lemon and a shot of tequila.

Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions Review - It's Back!

    And the fanboys inbound ….3….2….1….

  • Sir James, wielder of the Hammer

Fanboy rant #1: It’s clear that the US is the weak link here, still supporting an inferior product

Fanboy rant # 2: Shut yo mouth, the xbox 360 is better than the PS3

Fanboy rant #3: Europe and Japan are gay for not embracing the xbox 360

Fanboy rant #4: Europe and Japan knows quality over shoddy American.. uh Chinese workmanship

Fanboy rant # 5: Dude.. both are made in China!

Fanboy rant # 6: Yeah well… your mother is gay!

And so the beat goes on!

  • al360

    oookay :silly: :silly:

  • Q121

uh hah, your mother aint gay, I was with her last night! :P

I have honestly never heard that line but that’s awesome…

Can’t wait to use it :)

  • Sir James, wielder of the Hammer

I once heard some kid tell another during multiplayer Gears of War that his friend played as if “his mother was gay”. It kind of stuck with me, because it just made absolutely no sense.

I love the detailed graph analysis under the ‘Japan (aligned launch)’ graph lol lol

It’s friggin scary to see that even though the PS3 Slim was the winner in pretty much every region except for the US, that the US base is still strong enough to hold the Xbox 360 pretty much by itself… :dizzy:

I don’t have a slim yet, but my phat PS3 has been doing some weird shit to me lately, freezing a few times and not booting once or twice, so maybe the time for a slim is closer than I think.

  • mitas

fucking awsome picture – lol @the fanboy rants , thats some good shit

  • http://www.lazygamer.co.za Geoffrey Tim

Thanks. I was wondering if anybody would actually notice. :D

Oh hon, it goes so much deeper then what you posted! lol I saw someone simply say they liked the iPhone 4 on a tech site, and were attacked by people saying that he is a fanboy. It was soooooooooooooooo pathetic. I only didn’t pipe in because I didn’t want to be part of what was the dumbest argument I’ve seen on the Internet. heh (No iPhone for me, I have Verizon and therefore will end up with Android, not that I mind, so long as it’s not the Fascinate… Stupid Verizon.) ^_^

The only console this generation I don’t have is the Wii, because I just can’t afford it right now… So I have my opinions on it all, but I just like the games. ^_^
