It’s very nearly digital football season, with both of the heavy-weight footie sims out this month, Pro Evo 14 is the first out of the gate, and the first of the series in a long time to run on an all-new engine; the same bit of technical wizardry that’ll power the next Metal Gear solid games. It’s out tomorrow in SA (and other PAL territories), with FIFA 14 hitting shelves next week. While uber footie fans will end up with both, the more discerning gamer will probably only end up with one…but which?

Here’s the critical consensus on Pro Evo 14

CVG - 8/10

“A fresh foundation for the series. PES 2014 has its issues, but still manages to deliver a deep and satisfying game of football.”

Digital Spy – 4/5

“However, the action on the pitch is the best it’s ever been, rivalling and arguably surpassing that of FIFA, and setting up a tasty next-generation battle going forward.”

Gamespot – 6/10

“There’s still lots of fun to be had blasting goals out on the pitch and taking on friends online, but not as much fun as last year, despite some additions that should have made it more so.”

GodisaGeek – 9/10

“It deserves a wider audience, with Konami clearly having a corking engine on their hands in the Fox. Still, minor issues aside, this is a great way for the series to bow out on the current hardware.”

IGN - 8.4/10

“Ultimately, it’s a real testament to the enduring satisfaction of PES’s gameplay – a football experience based on freedom and creativity – that it’s still worth recommending in spite of these obvious shortcomings.”

OPM - 8

“When PES 14 truly shines, though, it outplays its megaton rival in several key areas. If you’re willing to scrape beneath the surface and accept its technical and licensing shortcomings, then this offers a nuanced, deeply rewarding game of football. If Konami can iron out those issues next season, PES United could yet be champions.”

VideoGamer – 9/10

“The best football title this year? We’ll have to wait until FIFA appears. Until then, Konami’s back on top of the heap.”

Hmm. Seems to be mostly positive, with Gamespot standing in as the wet blanket. FIFA 14 reviews will be coming soon, and with you all busy playing GTA V, perhaps you can wait until they’re both available before making your decision.

Which are you getting? ME? I’m busy getting my sports game kicks via the tennis mini-game in GTA V.

I'm old, grumpy and more than just a little cynical. One day, I found myself in possession of a NES, and a copy of Super Mario Bros 3. It was that game that made me realise that games were more than just toys to idly while away time - they were capable of being masterpieces. I'm here now, looking for more of those masterpieces. I am also the emperor of the backend

  • Admiral Chief Buccaneer

Avast! What be this silly round ball?

    • Wooden leg John

It be the head of our foe!

    • The Black Mossel

      It be land lubber foolishness!!

      • Admiral Chief Buccaneer

Arrrr, black mossel, avast I approve of ye

  • Deano

Hmm I have been impressed by the refinement in Fifa 14, but I downloaded the PES 2014 demo last night so will give that a bash tonight and see.

  • Lardus-Respect the beard

I see some reviewers like to go “negative” if some games did not change much from the previous iteration. Like Gamespot here, and someone else on MLB 2K13, yet they rave about the copy-paste of CoD year after year. Just sain’

  • Jonah Cash

I will get Fifa 14…. and 15…. and 16… and 17…. and so on and so forth!! I love Fifa online and that is where you will find me next week!!
Both PES and Fifa have some things that the other doesn’t but it all comes down to personal choice in my opinion. And my personal choice is Fifa…
The interesting thing though will be that I have pre ordered Fifa 14 on PS3 and not Xbox 360 where I have had every title form 2004… See where I am going with this?????

    • Wenches Love Cool John

      Muggle

      • Jonah Cash

Hahahaha!! You guys are the muggles when it comes to foosball games!!

    • Deano

So I take it you won’t be getting Fifa 2015 Brazil world cup then cos you missed that out.

      • Deano

        Sorry ment 2014.

        • Jonah Cash

I don’t buy the tie in Fifa games no…. Won’t pay a cent for an exclusive world cup game, not even as a DLC type of thing!!

  • skamui

Playing fifa feels like playing an arcade game, not the real game. If you are not someone who is engrossed in the beautiful game, then Fifa is a better choice for you. The nuances of PES can only be appreciated by people who play and watch the real thing.

    • HelloMoto

      Just the opposite…

      • Jeezyp

Maybe your idea of football is kick and run really fast.

    • Realfootballanalysis

This guy speaks sense, I monitor both titles very closely have done 4 years, PES14 hits the top spot with its beautiful realism.

    • Mark

That’s true , PES is about Gameplay that’s what I like, Fifa has the licenses but the gameplay is bored, every match is the same

Lol. So Jonah Cash buys a FIFA game every year but wont buy the World Cup or any other tie-in FIFA games at any cost whatsoever. Why Jonah?? EA ripping you off by trying to release 2 games in the same year? You say you’ve owned every FIFA game since 2004? Well if all you say is true, Jonah… then you’ve been ripped off for the last 10 years. Except , the truth is EA don’t force you to buy their game each year so technically you’re not being ripped-off… you’re just a moron!
