No new Xbox for E3 either Popular

Xbox

Is it, or is it not happening? We’ve been hearing for ages now how Microsoft and Sony would be debuting their next-gen consoles at E3 this year. Sony recently came out saying that they had no plans of showing of the next PlayStation this year, saying “I don’t think we’re contemplating talking about anything to do with future console iterations at this point…” Of course, it wouldn’t be the first time Sony’s…embellished a little when it’s come to E3 announcements.

Microsoft’s now said it won’t be revealing its next Xbox at E3 either.

Speaking to Gamespot at CES, Microsoft’s senior director of marketing and PR Jose Pinero said, quite plainly:

"At the moment we have nothing to announce," adding that “What we have seen with the Xbox 360 is that the Kinect has extended the life of the console.”

“Historically in the 6th or 7th year console sales start flattening or going down because it’s kind of the end of life,” Pinero explained.  “With us launching Kinect a little bit over a year ago, what we saw was a resurgence with Xbox 360.  It makes 360 a brand new console if you think about Kinect and you think about the new dashboard and the new UI that we launched this past November.  It’s like having a brand new console”

If that’s Microsoft’s corporate attitude towards the 360, then it’s unlikely we’ll be seeing a new Xbox this year, or even in 2013.

“We want that box to be the ultimate entertainment device in your house, giving you games, movies, TV shows, music, sports, and all kinds of entertainment.  So I think there’s a lot more that we’ll see on Xbox 360," Pinero concluded.

What do you think? Will Sony and Microsoft spring a pleasant surprise on us, or are we set for one of the most boring E3’s in recent memory?

    Called it.

If you look at  game theory you will clearly see that by openly saying that there is no PS4 announcement at E3, Sony invited MS to do the same, hence keeping the balance intact with no risk to either.

Sony is still recovering from huge PS3 dev costs and MS from that $1bil that they threw at the RROD.

Neither side has anything to gain from launching a expensive new console now, so by showing their short term cards Sony effectively used game theory to keep the balance of power between them more or less the same.

Cool stuff, lets see if the Me2, sorry Wii-U can shake things up.

Yip , makes sense , they still selling truckloads of the current consoles , and it is not like there is any threat to market share for either , unless the Wii-u makes a major impact (unlikely)

a Device can only last as long as it’s expiry date :P

As much as I like my 360, it certainly isn’t the “ultimate entertainment device”… in fact, it’s pretty useless for anything other than gaming.

    lol new consoles, please.

Give us cheaper games with last years graphics and Ill be happy for another 5 years while low production costs help more Indie devs release new IP and benefit from lower risk.
How many game developers had to shut their doors this generation. Or how many developers made profit this gen. How many games turned out shit because the platforms are just to difficult to code?. How many BUGS, Patches and fixes? We are five years in and only a handfull of game devs are using 1st party tools like Frostbite and are able to pull off some smart looking games. This gen still has a long way to go before they can halve the 5 year dev cycles like FFXIII, GTA, GT5 not to mention that most games with the number 3 on the end is just the 3rd episodic content of the fresh IP that came out 5 years ago.Like the last gen just as God of War 2 proved that all you need is some clever coding and not new expensive hardware the cycle renewed itself.

I have a feeling that thanks to Nintendo proving that you do not have to go NEXT GENERATION to make shit loads of money, you just have to go NEW GENERATION. So expect Kinect, Move and WiiU to be our next gen consoles.

Now give us fixed, finished games dammit.

Yeah because sub 720p resolutions and no AA or AF is totally 2012!

It’s a cold war and these two companies are playing a mean hand of poker. Both sides are trying to see what the other is going to do.

Well that is “kinda” good news for all PC gamers.
This mwans that we will be able to play the ” LATEST and GREATEST” games on the highest resolutions, visual settings etc. For another couple of years, with already out dated PC hardware. Saves me a bucket load of money.

    • Theuberutang

Down side to that is that a lot of the PC content will not be as good as it possibly can be.
