New Tomb Raider confirmed – traces Lara’s origin

Last month Game Informer teased a new game announcement by Square Enix which showed a wrecked ship with the caption “A survivor is born”. Almost immediately the speculation settled on a new Tomb Raider game, and this has now been confirmed.

In the latest Game Informer, Square Enix and developer Crystal Dynamics divulge as much information as they’re willing to over a ten page spread. Until the time that the magazine launches, all the internet knows is that this Tomb Raider adventure should be viewed as Lara’s very first; this is her origin story and the developers are telling us to “forget everything [we] knew about Tomb Raider”. Full pick of the awesome reveal art after the jump.

Origin stories provide a chance for developers to show a new side of characters. Lara will be inexperienced, young and desperate to survive after her ship is wrecked on an uninhabited island. Judging by the accompanying debut picture, she’ll have a tough time managing that. Official wording sums up the plot as follows:

“After a brutal storm destroys the boat she was travelling on, a frightened young woman is left washed ashore on an unknown beach. On her own but not alone she has only one goal, to survive.”

The official website has gone live but there’s not much more information on the game as yet. No release window either but the usual platforms have been confirmed: PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
