New Natal Prototype Is “More Precise” Getting There

Yesterday, I posted this article here about the the input lag when using Project Natal and how it may affect its games.

What we didn’t know is that Microsoft weren’t content with the hardware that they showed off at E3 and have been steadily working on a new prototype that is much better.

When the E3 Natal hardware was put to the test, it managed an average of 1/10th of a second, meaning that fast paced games like shooters may have some issues when it comes down to the responsiveness of the controls.

In the UK, Channel 5′s The Gadget Show were given the chance to try out the E3 Natal hardware and were pretty impressed. Jason Bradbury, who is both a gamer and an expert of technological thingamajigs the revealed the news about the new prototype.

“(Microsoft) did make a point that the next generation of prototype, which is now ready, which is not what we were using, we were using the E3 hardware.”

“The new stuff is even more precise, the movements are more precise,”

While we can leave it open to speculation, I believe that his comment on precision was with regards to the lag, although it could also just be the precision on the movements themselves.

1/10th of a second is not exactly a long amount of time, and if people are saying that it’s even quicker, then we may find that the end product won’t have any of the feared issues after all.

Thoughts? How important is input lag to you?

Hell 1/10th of a second is awesome most items have very simiilar which arent even aware of and if they have improved on that i think there is nothing to fear but the launch date!

  • Bonk

Say what is the differene between this and the Eye Toy?

    • http://www.lazygamer.co.za Geoff

They eyetoy is a ostensibly a high frame-rate Webcamera. this is a regular webcamera, with a 3D Depth Sensor in addition, instead of just capturing 2D images, it captures 3D space.

  • Macethy

I read somewhere that this thing is going to cost around R500. If that’s the case I would rather get one of those for my gf then a Wii to be honest. Guitar Hero would so rock with Natal! \m/ (>_<) \m/

  • Fox1

And the interest in it grows

I just realised that I’ve suddenly turned into my dad, all grumpy and cynical, with a hint of opinionated stubbornness.

Nothing about the ps3 wand or natal is creating a burning sensation in my loins, maybe that’s a good thing, because my expectations are so low for them, that when they finally release, I’ll be the first one with the next generation of Eyepets, rubbing my monkey thing’s tummy, while listening to the Doors, and giggling with delight.

    • GougedEye

I’m also getting old and cynical enough to pretty much ignore all the hype around new input thingywhatsits. Not at all interested in them on their own. Games are what I like. So produce a great game that uses Natal and I will buy Natal. Don’t and I won’t. Getting so tires of hearing how wonderfull Natal is without getting any solid information on any decent game that inherently uses natal. All marketing smoke and mirrors.

I must say, the idea of using gesture-based menus and all that is appealing to me, being able to navigate the dashboard without needing a controller, especially when my arcade stick is plugged in, it’s a bit of a bother.

Hey, I work for Lazygamer, don’t judge me, it’s all in the name lol.
