My Gears Of War 2 Worries

So Gears of War 2 is coming and from all the reports so far it’s going to be better than anything, including sliced bread.

Well Gears 1 (and the Alpacas) were the reason I came back from the multi-player wilderness and I have huge expectations for this sequel.

However I have some worries as well and most of them are related to the new features that are being added to the new version.

100’s of enemies
The much touted hundreds of enemies on screen at one time is worrying me to be honest. The first Gears was amazingly personal and intimate. I loved the fact that you felt like you were a small intricate part of a larger war, but your main worries were purely what was happening in front of you at that time. Now with hundreds of enemies I worry that you are just going to feel like a number.

Larger Maps
As above really, I don’t want to feel like I am in a huge epic war like Halo, COD4, Battlefield or anything else along those lines.

Halo Style Party System
Granted this one is only bad for those of us who don’t live in the UK or USA. Party systems are great but not when you keep getting your ass handed to you thanks to that 1 second lag or worse.

How about we all admit that we don’t care about people cheating to get more points and just let us play custom ranked games?

The New Weapons
The idea of a flamethrower is awesome, but really how practical is that going to be? How many other dodgy weapons are going to be added before we start worrying more about what weapon we are using rather than who we are aiming at?

The idea of proximity mines just brings horrible campers to mind.

Those Glitches
Okay to be fair I don’t know if it was purely down to the glitches or not but one of the most redeeming factors of Gears was it’s low barrier to entry and moderate learning curve.

Now I never really got good at Gears, I was okay.. I could hold my own most times and could even play league games after 12 beers… badly but I played.

The thing is you would often have a glitch work for you, the guy would barrel roll around the corner and get stuck on the next wall while you calmly chainsawed him in half.

Yeah it was unfair but it made you feel good and if the opponents were some of the nicer people on Live then it was all a good laugh and no one ever really got upset.

The same cannot be said for COD4 or Halo 3 which seems to wind people up no end.

Honestly the only person who I have met who can’t play Gears is my lovely wife, bless her uncoordinated gaming soul. She managed to find a van in Canals… I am still trying to find that van.

An improvement in graphics and sound would be cool but I am way more interested in the gameplay staying just as it is already.

“She managed to find a van in Canals… I am still trying to find that van.” hahahaa

But one thing I want to mention is that I do honestly believe that this story of hundreds of locusts running around is a slight bit of horse-sh#t. I think its more of an effect than what they are saying.

Whenever you see that many locust they are always in the distance, I dont think you will ever have a scenario where there are legitimately that many locust close to you, like I said, I still think its more of an effect to make the games seem huge.

I’m worried in general about the multiplayer now that the size of the SA xbox community has grown, when gears 1 released the community was fairly small and everybody knew everybody and it was always fun, always a laugh, never competitive to the point of anger. I’ve noticed that since then, as the community has grown, the amount of aggravation has gone up and the competitiveness is way too high to enjoy a game online for more a couple weeks

Its said a lot but I want to have games with the “old” guys, where we all just sit and play and laugh and don’t have half the children swearing because their new enemy killed them

Thats why i stick to a small select group of people that I play with every night, also, there are bots now. I can honestly see myself adding in bots rather than playing with some of the people out there…

Unfortunately though, with the ability to view your friends friends lists (although you can stop that) and be able to join sessions off your own friends list how can anybody keep it to your select group?

I’m afraid the old days seems to have passed and its time to embrace the angry-people-filled future….(wow that’s chessy:D)

Agree on the angry new kids.

I dunno about the rest. I hated Gears1 MP. Those rolly shotgun moves where lame and the game sufferd.

They have now added stopping power! So maybe me and my lancer can get some kills now.

Says who? Multiplayer isn’t changing that much. It’s 5×5, the 100’s of locusts is for a dedicated “Horde” mode, and personally I was far more frustrated by people who exploit those glitches to cheat.

In fact the reason I went off Gears was because of people becoming “glitch specialists” instead of just playing the game.

Frankly, I don’t need ranked games, my gamerscore doesn’t bother me that much. I’ll happily rather stick to playing local custom with the regulars.

Gears 1 got me back into gaming. I lived for it at a stage. I don’t go on Live often now precisely because of the kids who take it far too seriously and also the Clans that have formed which make it more than a little pathetic. Too much pressure to be able to play on time, do the right thing etc etc., clan slagging fests. Thats what killed COD 4 and Halo 3 IMO. It was much better when Gears just released and there was one or two lobbies maximum in SA at the time with a group of guys who just wanted to have fun. I hope everybody just chills the fuck out, forgets about clan rivalry and enjoys the game. Hooray for bots – screw stupid people.

well dont forget gears was and is still the one game that has PRIVATE lobbys that work, so play with who you want too, gears is the one game i know i can play with people i like, only in desperate times did i end up with stupid people. Secondly besides horde mode i believe the 100s of locusts may feature more in the background than in the actual gameplay, from what ive seen the sp and co op is still looking just as intimate as gears 1.

@ koldFusion – shameless self promotion is always good 🙂 .
@ Gazza – yeah, you’re right. The fact that Gears had private lobbies led to governing who you play with – it’s funny – I distinctly remember sitting in the lobby waiting for an invite from those whom I liked who were playing in a full lobby whereas their were tons of other somewhat empty lobbies. The truth is Gears ranks highly in most of our memories because of the supposed “good ol’ days” but, you know, there is no reason to not rekindle that come November 7th.
