About a year ago, Call of Duty : Black ops broke the video game day one sales record to become the biggest and best selling entertainment property in the world. It moved over 7 million copies on launch day. Funnily, it beat out the previous year’s Call of Duty, Modern Warfare 2, to do that.

Funny how history repeats itself, eh?

While many (mostly angry, anti COD core gamers) thought Battlefield 3 would make a sizeable dent in Modern Warfare 3’s sales, it seems they were wrong. dead wrong. According to reports, Modern Warfare 3 has completely obliterated the records set by Black Ops, which completely obliterated the records set by Modern Warfare 2. People, it seems, just can’t get enough Call of Duty.

Modern Warfare 3 sold nearly 10 million units on its first day,  – making it the undisputed champion of video games. The console split was unsurprisingly Xbox dominant, 54% on Xbox to PS3’s 42% – with the remaining 4% being PC and Wii sales. Of course, this doesn’t take digital distribution in to account at all, and it’s entirely likely that online PC sales will increase the tally by a million or so more. It’s become the first game to sell over 5 million copies on day one on a single platform – only slightly behind Black Ops’ first week sales.

Of course, there will be angry gamers going on about how Battlefield 3 is the better game, and that MW3 is just a bunch of extra map, or that people are just sheep – but the fact is people – in their millions – wouldn’t be buying Call of Duty every year if they weren’t having fun playing them, and that’s what games are about right? Right?

Guys?
