Modern Warfare 2 – Xbox 360 vs PS3 Comparison Flame On
   November 10th, 2009 clock image 8:00 am

MW2Comparison

If you are an avid fan then you have already completed the campaign of Modern Warfare 2 and a graphical comparison to help you choose which version to buy is a bit late now but if you are on of those hard workers who will be picking up a copy on your way home then this is for you.

LensOfTruth has picked up a copy of each game and subjected them to indepth graphical and performance testing to see which version is better.

First up we have the load times, generally the load times of either platform are not an issue as the story covers up the loading with mission briefings and you will only notice the load times if you are trying to replay a mission and skipping the mission briefing.

MW2Comparison2

The Xbox 360 was faster to load on each occasion and on one test it was a full 15 seconds faster than the PS3 which is substantial.

Next up is the all important performance or frames per second, they tested 9 separate clips and the PS3 came up tops in one of those clips while the Xbox 360 took the other 8 and ended with a global FPS of 57.31 compared to PS3’s 53.73.

Neither platform had any frame tear at all.

MWComparison3

Last up we have the graphics and once again the Xbox 360 reigned supreme coming out tops in each comparison mainly due to it’s blooming ability.

I have pasted some screenshots from as TheLensofTruth sometimes gets overloaded when it posts these comparisons but I do recommend clicking through to see the full results and comparison images.

MW2Comparison4

All in all the Xbox 360’s supremacy was not enough to make you pick up a 360 version if your friends are all on the PSN but the fanboys won’t let this one go quickly.

Nice. The xbox 360 does seem to have the edge in a few of those. But noticing the bloom effects – they don’t always seem to be good.

    Check out http://www.lensoftruth.com/wp-content/gallery/h2h_cod_mw2/cod_mw2_xbox360_roll_6.jpg and http://www.lensoftruth.com/wp-content/gallery/h2h_cod_mw2/cod_mw2_ps3_roll_6.jpg

The xbox one looks terrible with all that extra lighting. but then again i also noticed that i prefer what the guy in the background is wearing on the xbox pic – so what the hell do i know :pouty:

    • RSA-Ace

please don’t take this as some stupid fanboy comment. it was just the way the lensoftruth writer said “Small additions like the overbright (bloom/glare) system just helps make the visuals pop”.

  • Milesh Bhana

Wow, just, wow!. probably the best game of the year is out. And these fucking nerds are doing PS3 vs XBOX comparisions under a microscope instead of… playing the damn game.

Epic fail. You can’t take them seriously as gamers for doing that. :P

    • http://www.lazygamer.co.za LazySAGamer

They may not be gamers but they do seem to know quite a bit about graphics and frame rates…

      • http://na Flake

Still, micro analysing a AAA title like this for differences is lame. It solves or does nothing and is so 2007.

  • eXp

Naughtydog have shown the amazing potential of the PS3, so why are devs still porting sub-par quality games? The ps3 should have no problems matching the Xbox in GFX. I feel bad for our friends over at ps3za, they always get the raw end of the deal and the don’t deserve it.

Actually, some of them are… *ugh* … so a few do ;)

    • http://na Flake

I actually thought the PS3 version is better. So thats the version I’m getting. Oh who am I fooling I never intended getting the 360 version anyway. My 360′s a door stop.

  • Fred

I’m sure gamers will be happy with either version.

  • BHW

I think there is a strong parralel to be drawn between game development and engine development on either side of the Pacific.
    American Muscle vs Japanese tech.
Its easier and cheaper to squeeze 200kw out of the V8 than it is out of a 2.0 ltr 4 banger.

  • Reaver

After looking at the screenshots RSA-Ace posted, I’d have to agree that the bloom on the 360 is far too excessive. WTF kinda Oil-of-Olay/Dawn/Ponds/Vaseline is the guy on the left applying to his skin to get that shiny. It looks like Twilight-The Game.

    • http://na Flake

Not to mention that the 360 version looks like it suffers from some kind of black crush. Can barely make out any detail in the blackness

  • Ladunia

As usual, the 360 graphics own those of the PS3 :ninja:

the 360 graphics look a lot sharper.

i will be buying this on my way home

Waiting for Kalahari to deliver my 360 copy.

  • M@GE

Unfortunately I have a disease called “Graphicsisthemostimportantthing” So, it is thus the reason I will be getting the Xbox version… or better yet the PC version. :sideways:

    • Ladunia

Enjoy, no dedicated servers then

  • kab123

These fuck tards should compare it with the PC version. I’m sure it’ll give them a stiff one.

    • http://www.lazygamer.co.za LazySAGamer

Yeah the PC version will look better than the 360 version, but that doesn’t take away from these findings and is rarely disputed

  • aragis

did you know you could actually change the brightness when the display is overbright? its true!

  • lans

lens of truth admitted that they botched the settings for the ps3 but there is no denying that the xbox 360 looks better i still bought the ps3 version for the free multiplayer and i dont have xbox live anymore.

As I recall, when you tune an HD television through a THX Optimizer, it will tell you when you’re tuning your colors, to adjust your color “But NOT to the point of blooming.” I would think BLOOMING would be a graphical defect. Also, notice the 3rd example. The 360 version is all shadowed and darkened, but you can see that the PS3 version the lighting is obviously superior and the detail much more apparent. I also think the PS3 version from these screenshots, looks much sharper as the 360 version seems a little muddy as well as this grayish haze. I think the PS3 version takes the win in the graphics department, which may be the result of a few frames drop, but seeing the game played, I couldn’t see any effect in gameplay. A game install probably would have done the game good for load times, but Infinity Ward clearly wasn’t up for having the game installed, thus it took at bit of a hit in load times. Looks like my 360 will continue to collect dust, PS3 version. That and all my friends have boughten it for their PS3′s as well.

  • Jon

Actually the superiority of the xbox version is more then screen shots but in far superior load times. This is an excellent article
    “http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-modern-warfare-2-face-off?page=3″
Also remember that it is harder to develop for the PS3 then the 360. If they hadn’t been so busy trying to get it working on the PS3 could have added more content.

  • Joe

WTF? this was the most disgustingly biased pro xbox review ive ever read!

  • http://www.designwave.co.za Nick de Bruyne

I’m not the biggest fan of bloom effects in games. When used badly they can make a game look worse and/or less realistic. Sometimes it’s pretty… sometimes..

I think when it comes down to the lighting though, one needs to actually see video rather than screenshots

  • MadMike

I think we all should keep in mind that the xbox have been out for a much longer time then the ps3, and by that making the developers more likely to make the game for the xbox system and then import it to ps3 wich uses another type of graphic card and will then not use the full potential of the powerful core of ps3. Ppl seem to forget these things

  • Jkrillz

These guys are mental PS3 is way better. I have it for both systems. In my opinion i like the ps3 controller better because it has smoother controlling for better accuracy. In addition on the ps3 you can control the x axis and y axis sensitivity individually. The xbox you CANNOT. The XBOX appears fancy looking because darker colors are made to be darker and lighter colors are made to be lighter. The colors may appear to be dull on the ps3 comparison picture but the textures far surpass the XBOX360. As i play the game i notice people on the PS3 coming from a much farther range then i can on the XBOX360 due to less blurr on the PS3 with distant objects. There is clearly more detail on the buildings and grass on the PS3. The framerate difference does not matter at the rate of over 50 fps. Think about it. All that matters is the quality of the image. PS3 owns.

  • Jkrillz

Yes Exactly my point. I believe the controllers matter a lot too when choosing your console system. PS3 allows for more customizing with regards to x and y axis sensitivity too. Not to mention i feel the x axis is too fast on the xbox version. And when i slow it down then the y axis is too slow.

  • RoyVader

You just lower the brightness settings on the ps3 version and they’ll look exactly the same, which is the reason why multi-platform games look a little bit better on the 360. I have both console and i have been able to compare both games at the same time. At first, the 360 looked better, but then, i lowered the brightness on the ps3 version and they looked exactly the same. So stop arguing, is just a stupid brightness setting!!
