Mirror’s Edge 2 in development at DICE?

Mirror'sEdge

EA-owned Swedish developer DICE’s last game before churning out Battlefield 3 and its plethora of content was the futuristic first-person free-running game Mirror’s Edge – and fans have been clamouring for a sequel to one of this generation’s most refreshing new IP’s.

Both EA and Dice have been pretty coy about a sequel to a game that most people who played it – those who managed to get over the vomit-inducing feeling of free-running in first person – loved.

Now, a former EA developer (now with NGcomo) has said that it’s “general knowledge” that Mirror’s Edge 2 is currently in development DICE’s Stockholm studio. Previous rumours suggest that the game will be developed using EA’s current go-to engine, Frostibte 2.0; the same tech that powers Battlefield 3 and Medal of Hono(u)r: Warfighter.

Couple that with EA’ recent statement that they don’t want DICE to be a “Battlefield factory” I think the likelihood of Mirror’s Edge 2 is approaching near certainty. We just need to have a little…Faith.

While some might argue the game might be better as a 3rd person one, I think the first-person point-of-view is exactly what gave the game its character – and that unsurpassed feeling of speed and freedom. And violent vomiting. If there is one thing I do hope they fix for the sequel, it’s the lame-duck combat. Make it fun, or get rid of it completely.

The big question is whether nor not it’ll be destined for this generation of consoles or the next. A next-gen Mirror’s Edge powered by Frostbite? Where do I sign?

I'm old, grumpy and more than just a little cynical. One day, I found myself in possession of a NES, and a copy of Super Mario Bros 3. It was that game that made me realise that games were more than just toys to idly while away time - they were capable of being masterpieces. I'm here now, looking for more of those masterpieces.
