The big news from yesterday was obviously Microsoft’s surprise acquisition of Skype, the internet-based communications platform that allows users to chat – via voice, text or video – over the internet. Though I’d have found better things to do with $8.5 billion (Likely involving yacht and yes, Swedish hookers), it’s already increased their share-price – and they do plan on using it to improve the Xbox 360’s already robust communication options.
“Skype will support Microsoft devices like Xbox and Kinect, Windows Phone and a wide array of Windows devices, and Microsoft will connect Skype users with Lync, Outlook, Xbox Live and other communities,” said the company. “Microsoft will continue to invest in and support Skype clients on non-Microsoft platforms.”
I can’t honestly say I’d mind the inclusion of a fully functional Skype on my Xbox – provided we get it, of course – but I also can’t help feel that that vast sum of money could be put to better use..like a next-generation Xbox that won’t burst in to flames in the first month. It’s a curious purchase, considering they own MSN and its ubiquitous Live Messenger service, one that has nearly double the number of registered users. Also, I downloaded Skype last week and it was free. $8.5 billion. pfft. Stupid Microsoft.
