Metro: Last Light ditches multiplayer

Hooray! It seems like more developers and publisher are coming to their senses, by not needlessly tacking multiplayer on to games where it doesn’t make sense. The latest title to shed multiplayer because it just doesn’t fit is the sequel to the successful, yet criminally underappreciated Metro 2033.

In an announcement this weekend, Ukrainian developer 4A Games announced that the small team that was working on the game’s multiplayer have been pulled back to work on the story campaign – scrapping the multiplayer altogether.

Throughout the development of Metro: Last light a small, dedicated team had been working on a number of multiplayer prototypes. After E3, we decided to fold this multiplayer team back into the main group and focus 100% of the studio’s resources on the single player campaign. As a result, Metro: Last Light will not ship with a multiplayer component,”  reads the statement.

The game joins BioShock Infinite as games that just don’t need multiplayer and have thankfully seen those elements dropped. The same, unfortunately, can not be said for the otherwise rather excellent Spec Ops: the Line, which had terrible multiplayer – a "low-quality Call of Duty clone in third-person," which "tossed out the creative pillars of the product" – added to it at publisher 2K’s behest.

RPG-lite Survival horror shooter Metro: Last Light will be headed to PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 early next year.
