Is Destiny’s loot system unfair?

Destiny_-_Moon_Gold_Loot_Chest_Locations

Bungie is really trying to get everyone to understand that Destiny only really starts once you’ve reached the level cap. At this stage, you’re at the mercy of loot, which is the only way you can continuously get stronger and keep that level counter ticking. It’s irritating that this entire system is luck-based, and seemingly also very unfair too.

That’s according to a small study conducted by a few Destiny players. Since launch four Destiny players have been gathering as many engrams as they could, just to test how fair the Tower’s Cryptarch actually was. Turns out he’s a bit on an ass when it comes to dishing out Legendary items, even if you mange to find purple engrams.

The group collected a fair amount of Green, Blue and Purple engrams and checked what the odds were that the item spat out would be a Legendary. A total of 290 Green, 250 Blue and 55 Purple engrams were collected. Purple engrams are extremely hard to come by, but also have the best chance for a Legendary item. Once you hit level 20, these are basically the items you need to keep getting stronger, so what chance do you have with the Cryptarch. Not much, it seems.

Green Engram

  • White/Basic: 68 (23.45%)
  • Green/Uncommon: 201 (69.31%)
  • Blue/Rare: 21 (7.24%)
  • Purple/Legendary: 0
  • Yellow/Exotic: 0

Blue Engram

  • White: 0
  • Green: 53 (21.2%)
  • Blue: 186 (74.4%)
  • Purple: 11 (4.4%)
  • Yellow: 0

Purple Engram

  • White: 0
  • Green: 2 (3.64%)
  • Blue: 33 (60%)
  • Purple: 19 (34.55%)
  • Yellow: 1 (1.82%)

See, even Purple engrams only give you a one in three shot at a Legendary item, and they’re difficult to even find in the first place. Destiny wouldn’t have much going for it if it dished out Legendary gear casually, but one of the main criticisms against it is the luck-based loot in the endgame. You can go through several Strikes without getting lucky once, which halts your progress entirely. That’s not fun…at all.

I do hope Bungie pull a Blizzard here and use clever patches to deal with some of Destiny’s core gameplay issues. Otherwise, I don’t see many people sticking around in the next few months.

No you don’t. That’s the point. It’s luck based. Doesn’t matter how good you are or how hard you work for it. It’s all determined by a random number generator.

lol its not luck based, do strikes and the crucible you get emblems which you trade for legendary gear no luck needed. when you hit rank 3 in any rep you get legendary weapons, you can buy exotic gear with coins each week and you even get exotic weapons for free from bounties. The only people who are pissed about engrams are the scrubs who don’t wont to play the game.

The drop chance of higher level gear is luck based.
That is a separate thing to buying gear.
The chance of getting a legendary item from a purple engram is 1 in 3.
You can be a God at the game, the chance is still 1 in 3.

            I agree there.
Everyone has an equal chance, but putting in 10 hours to get a purple then have it go blue or green is a pain.

Wow a level 27 warlock thats so fuckin cool! I bet you tell all your co workers how awesome you are at destiny…and they don’t fuckin care infact, no one fuckin cares. This game is beyond frustrating if idiots like you are fine with playing the exact same content you just finished playing to hit lvl 20 for another 100 hours to get better items thats fine. But don’t bash anyone not willing to play the EXACT same shit for fucking weeks straight to get some stuff with better numbers on it. At least MMO’s open up more as you progress and let you see more content.

While technically every drop based game uses odds to control the rate items drop it truthfully is about being smart. High level units have a higher rates. I found 7 legendary and 23 rare engrams on my last farming run which took 2 hours. My 2 other partners had similar numbers. Also raid gauantees legendary items with each stage cleared. No decryption necessary. Drop rates in every game are is essence the same and will all be about luck. A game in which everyone has the same odds is by definition fair.

Raid does NOT guarantee legendary. Cleared VoG normal mode, got 2 shards from first “boss”, 3 shards and 2 energies from gorgon chests, 3 energies from portal event, and 1 energy from the final boss. ONE ENERGY! I don’t even have a legendary or exotic weapon to use the energies on. I’ve received the same rewards farming public events before the raid was released.

I remember those early D3 days. Grinding Act I for blue and yellow items in Inferno difficulty, just so you can get 1 shotted by the starting white mobs in Act II. And then when a legendary did fall, it wasn’t even for your class….

This would frustrate me in a Borderlands type shooter. Especially when I’m used to BAZILLIONS of AWESOME weapons!

You know what. This crap that loot must rain from the skies or drop from every hard boss needs to stop.

Back in the days of the likes of Diablo 2 and other loot based games a legendary was just that. Legendary. To get good items in Diablo 2 you had to do Diablo and Mephisto boss runs on hardest. One in every 50 runs might have given you a truly good item. Heck you’d be lucky to drop any legendary. This was true for every loot based RPG of the day.

Now legendary and high level items are expected on almost every run or boss. Heck diablo3 guarentees a legendary drop from any grift boss.

The sad part? The rare occasion you don’t get a legendary item from a grift boss is what legendary drop rates were back in the older ages of gaming.

When did we become so instant gratification based in games? No wonder microtransactions are a thing. People are unwilling to wait.

It’s a sad state of affairs fellow gamers. Sad sad sad.

As an avid D2 player, I have to disagree with you. While awesome legendary gear was rare (and you had to grind the boss runs for them – which wasn’t always very tough) you still got decent drops in the higher levels. Problem was, in those classic RPG games, you had to work your butt off to get your levels up so you were constantly switching gear.

D3 is unfair to compare, because you hit the “endgame” so easily. All you have (without the levelling system) is the gear.

I don’t know how long it takes to grind level 20 in Destiny (since no love for the PC) – but if I hit the level cap pretty quickly and hit the gear wall I’d be looking to make a dent in that at least.

But that’s my point. Games have no long term anything.

Fast level to max. High drop rates to compensate.

D2 took ages to get to max and even longer to have the perfect gear. That’s no longer the case with games.

It all revolves around right now. As quickly as possible

Seriously? you are going to make fun of him when you got lucky a couple times? Bungie admitted their system was completely random, and drop rates are even worse than the chance of getting a legendary. hell ive got so many damn weapon parts and sapphire wire and still not a blue sniper rifle. The looting and reward system is flawed, but their concept isn’t. they just need to tweak it a bit so doing 10 strikes in one day actually feels rewarding, instead of one person out of the 3 on the team finding maybe 1 purple turning out to be maybe a legendary. Im not saying give them away, but seriously? grinding is killing GTA and it made me hack it just so I have money and rank in that game to enjoy it. Don’t let grinding or “hard work” in bungies word, ruin this game. I love the game and the story, such a good game, and I would love to continue playing, but I wont if I don’t feel like im earning anything from the hard work I put into the game.

Games nowadays give it away free with no downside at all.

I tend to agree, Destiny’s whole premise is to “Become Legend”, if we’re all getting Legendary drops we’re not “unique” sure it might seem unfair but imagine your luck when you do finally grab that Legendary item and get to show it off to the world.

And it’s not to say that the drops you are already getting are crap either there are still great blue items out there that are doing justice to getting you better stats and Light.

I also agree that games need to get back into making it challenging again, Destiny has kicked my ass countless times and I keep going back for more, cause it’s thrilling to have completed such a difficult strike. I cannot wait to get into a RAID, and all I’m doing now is thinking of how to gear and stat my character for the best possible situation.

When you base everything off of chance and luck, it makes people not want to continue playing the game. You have some that are extremely lucky with the drop rate, and you have those that have been playing since launch day that can’t get to level 23. You grind for hours a day with nothing to show for it. While your friend started grinding for 10 minutes and already found 2 legendary, an exotic, and 5 rares. Now he’s a level 26 while your still stuck at level 22. That will kill any bodies will to continue playing this game.

My brother on the other hand found 3 exotics from 4 legendary engrams and is leaving me in the dust at lvl 28, to try and find better gear…. things like this make games like these so hard to play. I love destiny and its not like i haven’t tried but it seems like with all luck based loot games I’m always begging for something good to drop.

I don’t get this mind frame. Since when do people play videogames to specifically level up? Don’t they play videogames to… PLAY THE GAME? I’m only a level 21, and I kicked a level 27’s arse at PvP. Level doesn’t matter, and while Legendary gear is nice, you can make the uncommon work for you until you can start to purchase Legendary gear. Because as people seem to forget… you can do that.

          • Nicky Thorp

            September 24, 2014 at 20:25

PvP is a bad example though as it only takes into account armour and weapon abilities and not damage and physical defence.
They are purposely balanced to stop unfair advantages.
And at level 21 you will have a lot of the armour and skill perks.
Now, if you are going to tell me you can use uncommon gear and go into a Queens Wrath mission that has the Epic modifier on and not get destroyed, then I’m going to say that you are full of shit.

The guy that gives out bounties gave me a golden bounty for which I had to grind out 25 strike missions and get 10 000 crucible points for my first exotic item ever. Have a look at that gun though (and my items)

At the moment, I’m merely grinding rep for my purples. Since the gods of randomness hates the banana, I will rather not be a slave to RNG.

Tired of leveling, luck, unbalanced weapons, classes, management of an inventory?

Play more Quake Live. Weapons spawn at the same spot every 5 seconds and armour every 25. Strafe and rocket jumping, air rockets, plasma wall climbing, no reloading. Just pure fun. 🙂

Yeah let’s hand out legendaries and exotics to everyone just so it’s fair. The game is like that for a reason, if everyone had those guns it would decrease the value of them. Also you level the crypt arch up by continually giving him engrams then the odds of you getting better stuff increase. Keep playing and stop whining

Most intelligent answer I have seen on here in response to the engram and cryptarch troll. It is pretty much saying as a level 1 (newborn) you are expected to have everything known and things going for you immediately without experience.

A big gripe in quite a few reviews were the fact that everyone looked the same and had the same guns and even better guns are essentially the same as the lower level ones…. Now you want loot to drop legendary items at every turn so we can all have the same gear again? Really?
I don’t have a legendary item yet, but when I get back on Monday I will grind the shit out of that game to get me some as well!!

These are not issues. Wow loot drop rate is just as bad. I farmed SoO for months before getting every piece of gear I needed. I’ve gotten 2 purple orbs in Destiny. The first was a legendary auto rife. The second was a blue. Just today I got my first legendary Vanguard piece. Ive been max level for less than a week and have 2 legendary pcs. that seems VERY high by MMO standards.

It wouldn’t be a problem if everybody had to grind for the same amount of time to get the drops. But since some don’t have to grind at all to get drops while others have to grind for days just to get one item, makes the game not fun and unfair. Friends boasting they didn’t have to grind at all to get to level 26 while you been grinding for ages just to get to level 22 sucks.

I am the only one in my group that got 3 (even just 1) exotic loot find in the raid when all my other friends were a level 28 or 29 when I just turned 26. Sorry but the luck is random and they are still a higher level with almost exotic everything that you can own. If they could equip it all, they would have a full set but I would only have a weapon and exotic gauntlets. Why complain when your time will come. I had a level 22 get an exotic hand cannon from a strike when I got nothing. Point is invalid.

been stuck on Level 24 for what seems like 2 weeks. the ranking-up system is just too slow. I have to play 5 hours of PVP / repetitive missions just to grab a few marks? its the equivalent of video-game minimum wage. my friend just passed me up getting a random drop in the Crucible after being lvl 24 for freaking 2 days. Why would I want to play a game that rewards my asshole friend for what seems like no reason? It’s not like drops are performance based either. Often times I’ll be top scorer and find myself singled out not receiving an item. Psh.

My personal gripe with destiny’s loot system is that, when it comes to getting a legendary or exotic item, there’s a good chance that it’s not for your class. For instance, I’ve gotten my fair share of exotic and legendary loot from drops, but most of it was for a hunter. I’m a warlock. As it stands now, I have an exotic helmet for a hunter, a legendary helmet, two legendary torsos, two boots, and two arms, all for the wrong class. But I still cant even get a legendary helmet for my warlock without buying one (which I don’t want to do). I’m fine with having a low chance of getting a legendary or exotic off of a legendary engram, but I would like to see it be for the class you are using only, purely so I don’t have to start up a new character just to use the stuff I got. Also If destiny introduces trading, I have a good deal of hunter gear to trade for warlock stuff or weapons.

Yeah lets play a game where we can all get Legendary gear and weapons on every corner of every planet or moon. It’s not called Legendary gear for nothing. You need to be patient and spend time, playing in the crucible and do raids and strikes. Only then you will get more stuff and only then you have the feeling that you really deserved getting it.
But I get it, the Destiny hate hype is sort of cooled down so we need to trow some wood on the fire to keep it going. Well good Luck.

It’s not considered legendary if you get lucky enough to get it from a drop. You didn’t work for it at all. You were just lucky enough to get it from a drop. All legendary gear should be either earned from killing a boss, or earned through purchase. Then it would be considered legendary.

    Look, this is the line that matters;

“It’s irritating that this entire system is luck-based, and seemingly also very unfair too”

I have no problem grinding out hours to get better equipment, but let me give you an example as to why it’s a luck based and unfair system.

I have two characters. Took me 14 hours to get the first to level 20, about 10 for the second. My second character is now barely level 24 after 80 hours total (so ~66 hours for that char) and that is with three level 20 rare armor and one level 19 maxed out. I can’t level any further without legendary gear. Yes, I can buy legendary armor, but only 1 piece per week because I have zero interest in PvP, which also rules me out of ever getting any of the faction armor or completing an exotic weapon bounty.

So far I’ve picked up 17 legendary engrams, I have not received one piece of armor from any of them, let alone a legendary item. The majority of them have been ascendant energy.

Meanwhile, I know people who literally hit level 20 and within a couple of hours had almost a full set of legendary armor. Not exactly fair to people who have put in 50+ hours and would get slaughtered in an iron banner event to someone with less than 20 is it?

Don’t get me wrong, I have absolutely no clue how to adjust it to be fair to everyone.

The loot might like to screw you over, but I feel like it’s better that way at the moment. The exploit spots are too easy, so if every time you got a purple engram it actually dropped a Legendary, everyone would have full-Legendary loadouts and there wouldn’t be in ANY point to honest play at all. Just my opinion, but I’d hate the Crucible if drop rates were higher.

I would say the bigger issue is the chance of Legendary from a purple engram.
The drop chance is ok, enough to make sure you get enough items, but putting in two days of work to get a couple of purple engrams only for them not to be Legendary and in fact turn green is a bit disheartening.
I don’t really understand why that is a thing.
I’d rather a slightly lower chance of getting the purple engrams, for it to be a higher chance of being worth the time.

That is not the case for others, my brothers purple engrams are great. His first was a legendary and his second. I get more game time, had more rolls. His luck is just better, not sure why… but the 1/3 chance seems like BS. 12-15 (purple) engrams ALL BLUE. Its not about “shiny” things. Its about the fact that without legendary armour, the raid and nightfall strike are basically unavailable.

When you’re 50 hours in, there’s not a lot, if anything you haven’t done yet.

The more I think about it. The more I feel there should be higher level rare gear too, somewhere between level 20 rare’s and legendary gear. At least then you’d be able to level and have a chance at those quests, even if your defense and attack wouldn’t be as strong as someone with legendary gear

I’m happy with the loot system but that’s probably because I’ve been lucky as well. Spent 30 min farming moon mission. Got my first purple engram and got a legendary chest for my titan. Since then I have been farming earth exploration and picked up 10+ purple engrams, so far I have got mainly resources to upgrade my chest piece which I am happy with since the resources are hard to come by as well.
Currently I’ve put 27 hours into the game and I have 2 legendary pieces level 25, so I am not complaining. I think the looting system is right with some luck involved but that’s how it should be.

Be happy with it because you got the items, but also be happy with the fact that it is pure random and not everybody and their momma has everything the exact same. I have all armor except my helmet as a legendary or exotic. I have yet, this entire time to find a legendary helmet and looks like I will have to buy one. Each time I get a legendary helmet engram it turns green or into a strange coin or some other fun nonsense. Do I bitch about it? No. I have yet to get a helmet and though it may not be exciting to have that as my only rare item left on my armor, it is still funny how the cryptarch trolls me so hard with a helmet. I joined a strike with a friend (level 26 strike) and somehow a level 23 joined up with us. After the raid, I got a hunter chest (I am a warlock), my friend got a strange coin, mote of light and a legendary chest piece whereas the level 23 received an exotic handgun. Now does that mean I screamed a rage fit and blew up? No, I played again and received garbage again but who cares, it is a game of chance and luck. People that want the best immediately need to stop complaining and make their own game if they do not like this one. If the drop rate is increased immensely, people will not play it at that point due to the fact everyone will have the best item and nothing will be any different from any other game where all you have to do is join a game for EXP and then you get the item for it. Oh well, people will complain about anything.

If it wasn’t luck based, what better solution do you guys have then:

    The way I see it:
If it is earned by completing any type of mission, strike, weekly or daily event or even bounty, people will eventually run around in the same gear and with the same weapons. Because we all follow the same route and complete most of the same missions we all get the same awards. I think with legendary items that is just not the point.
If you could earn it by playing in the crucuble, it’s not that fair either because the really good pvp players will get all the good stuff while the average or below avg. player will get nothing. And the crucible will be dominated with looters and the lesser player will have no chance at all.

I think Bungie had a tough choice with this loot system and even if it is not great atm, at least its fair because we can all get lucky or we don’t.

I would like to hear some suggestions how it should have been.
If I think back at the early Battlefield 2 days, the harder unlocks and medals were earned by playing a lot.
Maybe some sort of ranking and medals type would be a good choice.

Play 100 hours with the hand cannon and you will get a legendary hand cannon or
play 100 hours as a warlock and you will get 10 secret coins which you can spend on any legendary item.
    Something like that might work.

This is the whiniest article on Destiny that I’ve read yet. Yes, it’s luck based. Yes, that means that someone who can spend 70 hours+ weekly on the game won’t be so overpowered that it’ll make playing horrible for the rest of the players who have, you know, jobs and school and responsibilities.
However, the more you play and the more higher leveled enemies you killed, the higher the probability is that you’ll receive a legendary item. So, why complain? Also, if all you’re playing for is to get an item…. maybe you should reevaluate your gaming priorities.

It’s not unfair, but this game will see a MASSIVE drop off soon. Since VoG is too hard for the avg gamer, and you are only seeing it cleared by the players with massive amounts of time played already. “treasure cave” is so crowded that it not has a more negative effect than positive. It’s so crowded that its not worth trying to farm when you only kill 1-3/8 mobs that spawn. Crucible, vanguard, and their faction farming will take the avg player months to get rank 3 with all of them. There are too many games that reward players much more abundantly per day, so i can see why ppl who only can play for 1-2 hrs per day will be dropping destiny soon. The catch up gap will continue to grow and less and less ppl will be playing which in turns makes this game worse. The more ppl the better, so im afraid that this game may be at its peak right now. The #1 selling game of all time imo will only get worse…
Again this is my opinion as a wanna be hardcore gamer. I used to be able to grind out 3-4 hrs a day and more on the weekends. Now with a total of 5-8 hrs per week this game will turn ppl like me away very soon i suspect.
I just hope bungie provides a new difficulty for the more casual gamer, even if it is a joke it will give us a sense of accomplishment rather than always feeling behind. Upgrading gear should continue to be rare in a sense, but it would also be nice to not be so penalized for creating a new class. Maybe have rep share account wide but only 30-50% to your other toons?

All of the complaining I have seen about the loot drops is incredible. Everyone whines about how poor the drop is, why it is unfair that they have not found anything yet someone else farms in the loot cave and ranks up. I have yet to go to the loot cave because guess what? I am not a whiny little bitch about it. If someone has to loot spam on a glitched part of Earth I let them do it. I see all the pathetic people standing there wasting hours upon hours in hope that they find a legendary where as I go and actually enjoy the game for what it is. I hit level 28 in one week from launch just by playing the game consistently. I went into the raid and earned myself 3 exotic weapons from a chest where the rest of the group found legendary items only and not a single exotic. I played a strike with a friend and a random (both are level 25) and both of them unlocked an exotic shotgun and all I got was a chestplate for a hunter whereas I am a warlock. I congratulated them and continued playing because I, once again, am not a whiny bitch. Get over the fact that you are not obtaining a million legendary engrams and having the cryptarch hand you an exotic or legendary on each one. I laugh about the fact that I have turned in 100 legendary and received 34 greens from them. I also turned 6 of the engrams that contained gauntlets into the exotic ones that Xur was selling and I broke them down for other loot. That was the best part of my day as I could laugh it off and go join my friends on a random patrol or strike grind instead of pondering life and thinking about stopping the game because I didn’t get what I wanted within the first month of release. If you are a real gamer you will get over the fact that you do not earn everything as fast as you want it nor as often as you do and just play the game and battle through the rough spots. This has more potential for fixes and every one of you whining about this has yet to understand that some games start out with errors which are fixed along the way when it comes to actual viewing of probability and other known issues. A game that is constantly ruined year after year because the public whines about everything is the Call of Duty franchise. Everyone wants something different so they appeal to how their main gamers want it and then it turns to trash. I hope Bungie and Activision keep it this way with the exception of making it to where harder enemies actually drop better loot. Aside from that, keep drop rates the same as well as making the cryptarch the biggest troll in the game.

I don’t like the set up at all, and I don’t like that you have to play multiplayer missions just to advance. I am seriously disabled, so cannot keep up with the average player, even though I was once world ranked at a game or two (Starsiege KotH world champion, et al). Getting enough gear to survive through and experience the story is problematic, especially as missions get harder, and there is no easy setting in regard 4 gamers with disabilities. Its frustrating at best. Add in the bugginess of the game, and it definitely does not look like a long term vehicle, at least for me.I do wish they had put more time and thought into the storyline, and worried less about the multiplayer aspect. I have to say, I am very much looking forward to Dragon Age and Mass Effect 4. Give me something with teeth, not superficialities!

Look, I understand this whole “Legendary is legendary” attitude. Believe me I completely agree! Now when I’m playing a pc MMO or such like I can understand this logic with the abundance of different instances and raids and battlegrounds etc etc. I mean I can play for hours, days even straight and do something different each time. But I play Destiny, new missions and lots of fun until I hit 20. Then all my friends and clan mates are off doing raids I need to level up for, and to do this I need to either grind for weeks or rely on an extremely random loot generator. Wouldn’t be so bad if I wasn’t alone and grinding to same 5 or so missions every fucking day! Same bounties “5 patrol missions” “kill this guy” “kill 2 enemies with the fusion rifle 20 times” < Fuck is that about?! So after a week of me being off ill/holiday I have got possibly one light level. And nearly bored shitless of Destiny. The Queen brought something new though! A useless shitty vendor whos items do not restock. New bounties (They are a nice change) And then the Queens Wrath Events! What a load of fucking bullshit they are! Basically extreme difficulty and I'm not joking here, full fireteam each time. First time I got a helm, other got a chest and other got fuck all. Second time I got the same fucking helm, they got nothing. Third time we all got THE SAME FUCKING HELM! Why? What am I supposed to do with that? Fair enough random generator but three times in a row on a limited time event? And that's not even counting the time sitting around waiting for the bounties to reset. Oh! And don't even get me started on the Cryptarch! Fucking hate that smug bastard! And then we have the leveled vendors. A solid months into this game grinding suitable exp I might actually hit level 1! "Level 2 needed to buy stuff LOL!" Fuck off. I'm playng Destiny for 2 reasons now. 1: I'm off work and have nothing else to do. 2: I REALLY want to do this fabled VoG with my friends EVENTUALLY! And I think X'ur is a God 😉
Truth be told I like Destiny. It's fun at times. Just needs A LOT of work and A LOT more content.

If everyone had to WORK HARD then the system would be fair.

The problem is that as it stands now, half of the people have to work hard to get their gear whereas the other half has just RNG luck and gets that “Legendary gear you have to work so hard for” without working hard.

We are not asking “Make legendaries easy to acquire”, we are asking “Make it as hard for everyone, not just us”

We agree on that “free legendaries” destroys the game, that´s exactly why we hate RNG.
Because some people ARE getting the free legendary pass by pure luck.

Stop lecturing us about how this is the way of the MMO and we should just suck it up BS. Since reading comprehension seems to be low let me speak slowly; no one is complaining about working hard and grinding for hours to reap the level up rewards. The problem is the arbitrary and capricious nature of the rewards. I just hit level 4 Vanguard and after all that grind of patrols and bounties and strikes my reward: the exact same pair of legendary gloves I bought with Marks 2 days earlier. If that’s your idea of ‘fun’ it’s certainly not mine.

I don’t understand the arbitrary nature of the drops. Why can’t a certain amount of grinding produce a guaranteed result? How is the value of the item devalued if after a prescribed amount of work/play/achievement I can get to choose something that will be genuinely useful to my character AND reflects the amount of effort put in?

You have to earn your endgame gear and this is what gives it value. But as it stands right now some people are earning their gear with very little effort and others are having to grind over and over again with no luck at all.

    Not fair. Not fun.

Sorry. but these numbers are not correct. I am pretty sure they are EVEN lower than this because Blue/Purple have a chance of giving your a rare time, mote, ascendance, or coin.

Im sure that other people have already told you on how flawed your logic is in this article. Once you hit a certain rank in both crucible and vangaurd you can start purchasing gear. then technically speaking if you do not get shards as loot you can still purchase legendary gear and break it down for shards. With just the gear you can receive from the shop you should easily hit 28 maybe 29. To reach the level cap of 30 you could say is luck based in terms of raid drops but whoop-dee-do. Its one level that you’ll get it eventually. Not to mention the fact that the difference in levels and gear stats disappear in crucible so the gear you get shouldn’t actually matter.

This is a shit system . I’v got two characters Hunter=28, titan=27 i have 2 gold guns that i bought and one legendary That i bought i have over 80 hours play time and have never got a engram drop worth anything, and i have never got a gold bounty. My cousin and friend are about the same rank as me and each have had at least 2 gold bounties and 2 gold engram drops.
It’s so frustrating I hate this game and will not buying any DLCs for it.
Its lack of story means you either have to fight online or treasure hunt, and since there is nothing to hunt ( because loot is random) and pvp is boring i suggest not purchasing this game!
HEY BUNGIE NICE FUCK UP!!! You went from epic game creators to … what ever the hell this is? I guess thats what you get for asking activision to help. I mean they fucked up call of duty! and how hard was it to make those (respawn, kill, die,) rinse wash repeat.

Why yes it is unfair. I have been stuck at level 24.5 for three weeks now without a purple drop. As soon as COD comes out I am done with this P.O.S. game.

Reading trough these comments really kinda pisses me off. Alot of idiots here who know better…

    The facts:

The game uses a random number generator on EVERY loot drop, raud, strike, engrams etc.

It might be considered fair yes, and you can buy “good gear” from the vendors. BUT!
to get far in the game you need better(!) gear, you need raid gear. As of now you must have it to reach lvl 32. You can play the raid for several months and still not get raid gear. And since that kinda forces you to play pvp, it is really nto fair. Some people want to play PVE, and the vanguard doesnt have that good weapons or armour sets.

Luck is the key in this game, skills is really not needed at all. you can play the raids, get past the first part there and a chest and you are halfway there IF you are lucky. skill should be to some point be rewarded.
