How Far Cry 4 will let you be free

FREEEEEEE

I got to play Far Cry 4 at Gamescom, and I was rather impressed with it. I wasn’t all that blown away at first; it seemed like more of the same – but after some quiet reflection, I realised there was more to it. There’s a far broader range of skills and tools at your disposal, suited to pathed playing – what it just needs now, is to ensure it tells a compelling and interesting story.

With Troy “I’m in everything” Baker providing the voice for balmy bad guy Pagan Min, we’re pretty convinced it’ll be quite entertaining. Here’s a video with Executive producer Dan Hay, creative director Alex Hutchinson and art director Joshua Cook explaining how the game was designed to allow players to tackle the game in whatever manner they choose.

They also show off some of that crimson-hued, otherworldly Shangri-La stuff – and discussed the game’s more inclusive co-op, which allows you to do any of the open world, non single-player campaign  with a friend. Remember, if you get the game on a Sony platform, you’ll be able to invite a friend to play the open world shenanigans even if they don’t own the game.

“Explore the harrowing heights of the Himalayas and the hidden reaches of Shangri-La in Far Cry 4, the ambitious open world experience. The developers at Ubisoft Montreal and Ubisoft Toronto take us inside their design philosophies when crafting the dangerous yet beautiful world of Kyrat. Far Cry 4 launches November 18th for PS4 and PS3.”

I'm old, grumpy and more than just a little cynical. One day, I found myself in possession of a NES, and a copy of Super Mario Bros 3. It was that game that made me realise that games were more than just toys to idly while away time - they were capable of being masterpieces. I'm here now, looking for more of those masterpieces. I am also the emperor of the backend

I have always wanted the game to just have more leveling and gathering elements.

Far Cry 3 I had almost all the upgrades and the story wasn’t even 20% or something. Same with AC. I had the best sword at like 10 minutes into the game. I want MORE! Skills, items etc… DO IT!

    • http://www.themovies.co.za Rinceable

Actually, although I loved Far Cry 3, it was the easiest game I’ve ever 100%ed.

      • UltimateNinjaPandaDudeGuy

Ain’t that the truth! I need something more challenging!

“had the best sword at like 10 minutes into the game”

      Cheating doesn’t count dude

      :P

      • UltimateNinjaPandaDudeGuy

I think I just collected a shit load of gold and then bought the best sword I saw… Turns out that was the best one ever! =/

        • Admiral Chief Assassin

          So 10 minutes you say?
          :P

          • UltimateNinjaPandaDudeGuy

Well it was really early into the game. It was the first town. It could not have been more than an hour. I am thinking 30 minutes.

Re the alt-text: If he’s free, why’s he still wearing pants?

    • Hammersteyn

      Agreed!

    • http://www.themovies.co.za Rinceable

Cus he’s not at home playing games?

      • Hammersteyn

True freedom is never having to wear pants.

      • Alien Emperor Trevor

        Oh… that explains the complaints.

  • http://www.themovies.co.za Rinceable

I read somewhere you could only play 2 hours coop? Pretty sure that is nonsense but would suck if true.

Nah I think that is related to PS4 co-op, it`s an option where if say, you bought far cry 4 for your PS4, but you have a friend with a PS4 that you want to play co-op with but he doesn`t own the game, then you can invite him to play co-op with you, without him owning the game, but then there`s the time limit. I am not one hundred percent sure about this, mainly because I don`t care (I`m a PC Gamer xD) but I do recall reading something like that somewhere.

I’m quite looking forward to this. In all honesty, I’ve enjoyed each iteration of Far Cry for different reasons:
Far Cry – new and exciting open world FPS that looked amazing for its time.
Far Cry 2 – Will never forget the first time I was sneaking up on a base camp, opened fire and then suddenly heard Afrikaans swearing… I had to stop playing, I was laughing so much! Was a decent FPS (it had its flaws, but it was fun to play mostly).
Far Cry 3 – Felt like it took ‘open world’ a bit further and gave me more freedom than the previous games. Thoroughly enjoyed my time with Far Cry 3 and its one of those games I was sad when I completed it because it meant it was over. Great, fun game!

    • Sith JJ

You pretty much summed up my experience there too.

      • http://www.themovies.co.za Rinceable

Oh you would agree with him hey! You dirty little whore! *RUNS

        • Sith JJ

That’s not what you called me last night!
          Wait, no. That’s not right.

          • http://www.themovies.co.za Rinceable

            0_O

          • Alien Emperor Trevor

Why didn’t he call you that last night? I thought it was “role play” night.

          • Sith JJ

I was dressed as you (his favourite), so I suppose it makes sense then.

          • Alien Emperor Trevor

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

          • Kensei Seraph

            *Spoken in documentary narrator’s voice*
And here we have the unnatural RJT in their natural environment.
Watch as they *sound of narrator vomiting*
            *Spoken in highly distraught voice*
            Oh god that is disgusting.

          • Anon A Mouse

David Attenborough will be so proud.

          • http://www.themovies.co.za Rinceable

            THAT is disgusting? 0-O

          • Alien Emperor Trevor

            Why? WHY?

      • Rock789

Great minds, my friend! Great minds… :)

    • MakeItLegal

I played far cry 2 on ps3 …. Worse decsion ever

  • Hammersteyn

Thank heavens this does not launch in October. And why the hell is there such a title drought before October? I had to resort to playing Double Dragon Neon yesterday

  • Kensei Seraph

But what if I choose to hack emails and use diplomacy?

    • Alien Emperor Trevor

Then you’re a giant GIRL and must go play Papers, Please while us manly MEN climb mountains, take drugs responsibly for gameplay reasons & shoot people in the face.

  • Sith JJ

    Off topic here.
Those Steam 2K sales are mad, yo.

    • Alien Emperor Trevor

Yes, I picked up The Bureau & all it’s DLC for around $6.

      • Sith JJ

I see you can get Enemy Unknown and The Bureau for around $8
And that Civ5 is Super tempting.

        • Alien Emperor Trevor

But I don’t think Enemy Within is included in that, which is a really good expansion. If you’re thinking of getting those wait until the last day, XCOM franchise might go on sale for a better price the next couple of days.

          • Sith JJ

Alright. I’ve never played any of the Xcom games (don’t hate me). So I’m really curious to try it out.

          • Travis

They are amazing , but you have to like turn based games, which a lot of people dont.

          • Sith JJ

            I really do like them.
            Civ, Warlock.
            Great games.

          • Admiral Chief Assassin

            PLAY THE DAMN GAMES JOHN

          • Travis

XCom Enemy Unknown, now thats an awesome game! We need more MORE Turn based games!

  • Anon A Mouse

    This is freedom…

    • Sith JJ

      I’m not refreshing.
      How’s that for freedom? ;)

      • Anon A Mouse

Somehow it ended up as a double posting. I’ve got skillz yo.

      • Alien Emperor Trevor

        You’re right.

  • Anon A Mouse

    This is freedom..

    • Admiral Chief Assassin

      Awwww jisssss

  • Johan du Preez

    Choo Chooo!!!! ALLL aboard!

  • Nikola

After original Far Cry I completely lost interest that game was great these new Far Cry games are just plain boring, they might improved the gameplay and the whole leveling thing but my problem is the story first one had hidden island with genetic made monsters mistery now it’s just like shoot shoot on a cool looking island playing as some stupid kid who never held a gun and all of a sudden he becomes super badass(Far Cry 3) come on…

  • Sith JJ

Now just give us pc folk the game without forcing Uplay on us and you’ll have yourself even more sales.

    • Kensei Seraph

I’d buy it just to vote against Uplay.

      • Sith JJ

Agreed. I don’t mind Uplay that much, but I mind very much that it’s forced on you.
