Guinness says CoD: Black Ops has Greatest Video Game Ending Popular
   February 13th, 2012 clock image 12:45 pm

BlackOps

Once upon a time, Guinness, the organisation behind world records and mucky black booze of life used to be a reputable organisation that produced books full of completely objective, distinct and wholly verifiable world records. Now that they’re branched out in to video games, their “records” have become decidedly more subjective.

They’ve now fingered Call of Duty: Black Ops as having the best ending in a video game ever – a conclusion they’ve come to by polling 13,519 gamers and tallying up the votes, making it completely official.

“Everyone has an opinion on how to end a game whether it’s an epic boss fight, a clever plot twist or a 90-minute movie. This list recognises some of the greatest endings and hopefully will get gamers talking about what are their favourites and why,” Guinness World Records 2012 Gamer’s Edition editor Gaz Deaves said of the choice.

Before your head fills up with unbridled rage, here’s the list of 50 best endings, according to the poll.

Guinness World Records: Top 50 Best Video Game Endings

  • 50. Resident Evil 4
  • 49. Star Wars: Knights of the old Republic
  • 48. Ratchet & Clank: a Crack in Time
  • 47. Crysis 2
  • 46. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
  • 45. Call of Duty: World at War
  • 44. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II

  • 42. Super Metroid
  • 41. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
  • 40. New Super Mario Bros. Wii
  • 39. inFamous
  • 38. Fallout 3
  • 37. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
  • 36. Gears of War 2
  • 35. Bioshock

  • 4. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
  • 3. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
  • 2. Halo: Reach
  • 1. Call of Duty: Black Ops

Somehow, I think the result may be a little skewed – considering just how many copies of the game was sold, making this more of a popularity contest than any sort of definitive list. What game do you think had the best ending? The Guinness World Records: Gamer’s Edition 2012 is available in book stores right now, if you happen have a short-legged table  that needs propping up, a leaf-pressing hobby or a door that just won’t stay closed.

    LOL! No.

    • http://twitter.com/JimLenoir James Lenoir

Lol, this has to be the greatest list of fail ever. COD Blops? Halo Reach? And all before Red Dead Redemption, God of War and Zelda?

No Guinness.. No! You’re doing it wrong!

      • Anonymous

Yeah, this list is embarrassing for Guinness.   Love God of Wars ending, but Portal’s ending was effin fantastic.

        I’m still alive…..

  • Nicholas Rowan

    Must… remain… calm… and… zen…

Okay I disagree totally. I have NO idea how you even “rank” something as subjective as an ending. How do you qualify it? This just smacks of Guinness desperately trying to expand their horizons since they’ve stopped ranking people who can eat the most hot dogs.

Leave our games alone Guinness! You don’t know what you’re talking about and neither does your 15 year old that compiled this list for you given the age of all these games.

    • http://twitter.com/frikkenator Frikkie

Lol… I have to agree with the 15 year old argument. I would not rate ANY call of duty ending anywhere near the top 20.

    • Anonymous

We should moer the 15 year old, then we’ll take their top spot for “video games cause violence” award

    • http://www.lazygamer.net Gavin Mannion

Personally the best videogame ending that I can think of right this second is Halo Reach… awesome ending to an okay game….. oh wait!!! Braid.. best ending ever… ever…

      • Nicholas Rowan

I’m kinda embarrassed to admit I haven’t played Braid yet. I’ll get to it right after I get through Deus ex :)

  • Erwin Kempff

seems like too much Guinness and not enough sanity…

  • http://twitter.com/frikkenator Frikkie

Wow… Now I have to spend the rest of my day cleansing my mind of this utter stupidity.

  • Johan du Preez

ROFL is this for real wow  didnt know Guinness was in in old Bobby’s pocket as well.

  • Anonymous

Assasin’s creed II had a boring as ending, I woudnt even have put in in the list.

It just seems like people simply put their favourite games up there. Regardless of the ending.

    • Erwin Kempff

AC2′s ending also left me with a big WTF on my face.

The first’s ending was a bit of an anticlimax for me. You get this awesome medieval storyline and then you forget that you are actually not there and then you get a very sci-fi ending to the game, but it was sort of a sci-fi game from the start….

Aaaahhhh, now I’m angry and confused again

      • Anonymous

I know, and that fat dude at the end was easy to fight. Not at all a crazy memorable ending.

Did you also feel good as hell when Kratos became the new god of war at the end of part 1? With him sitting in that moerse chair. That was a hair raiser for me.

        • Erwin Kempff

          Never played GoW,  PC gamer.

I hate putting in the time and effort for a game, then the ending is like WHAAAAAT???

Recent good game ending for me would be DX HR, but also left me feeling wanting more, they left some unfinished business for me

Well … What do we have here? Something I can absolutely ignore.

Besides I also do not like the beer either. ;)

    • Erwin Kempff

I rather like the ol’ Guinness.

      • Anonymous

Yeah, always loved Guinness, but, there are also some crazy good stouts out there.

  • Anonymous

    Well that’s redoodoodiculous.

If any 2011 game had a really great ending, it would be Gears of War 3, for being one of the few games that not only had a complete finishing scene, but also avoided inserting a half-arsed attempt towards an inevitable sequel.

    • Anonymous

      Like Duke Nukem Forever. lol

  • T-wholf

I digged the God of War CGIs and endings very creative…. Also the Final Fantasy CGIs and endings are amazing…. to pick the best hmm not sure but I also digged the Mortal Combat endings with the different characters, was my main objective to complete the game was to see the epic endings

  • http://twitter.com/HighOnFireZA Kaptein

This just in. The color red just made the Guiness book of records for being the prettiest color. Well done red!

  • Anonymous

I have played all of those games and only one sticks out that I can still remember to this day thanks to its great story and emotional draw.

    Snake eater.

Final Fantasy 8 is a close second. But what do I know when it comes to the greatest selling game of all time Black Ops, that games story formula was stolen from the best shooter on the PS2 (BLACK) anyway. Blahhh…

    • Nicholas Rowan

FF8 made me cry manly tears.

Edit: I also like how the ending was 15 minutes long.

      • Anonymous

In fact I am crying right now just thinking about how much Hironobu cared about great epic story telling and it showed in his master piece Lost Odyssey. I am actually crying with laughter when I thing about how convoluted the story telling became with Final Fantasy XII, XIII and last but not least ROFL XIII-2.
Its like the cheap production costs back in the day helped the tight Square team make a game based around the script where as today its all about how far the graphics can be pushed and whatever level the other department built out of the factory line at Sqeenix they just patch it together. SOB SOB:(

This is a sad generation. Its Ken Levines job to to bring back great story telling in BIOSHOCK 3…with no bloody multi-player this time thank goodness. But I would not be surprised if it becomes episodic thanks to Redeem codes and DLC story.

      • Anonymous

In fact I think FF8 is the longest ending in any videogame. Not to mention the 45min boss fight. Longest ending to the best love story in videogame history. Snake eater was also long but thats because the 50 000 page script had to wrap up lol

Now we are 12 years later and we get endings like Duke Nukem Forever that lasted 30seconds to be exact. lol But it was done as a piss take down to Duke even commenting on what a shit ending it was lol

        • Anonymous

Heh, the boss fight in FFVIII was really a let down if you had the Lionheart limit break + a stockpile of Aura spells.

As far as game ending lengths, MGS4 crushes all competition in that one (by an hour in most cases).  But, in the grand scheme of things, FFVIII is actually fairly low on the totem pole.  Eternal Sonata, FFIII, Infinite Undiscovery, Suikoden 3, Xenosaga 3, and Dragon Quest VIII all have longer endings.  Just not sure they’re as well done ;)

      • Anonymous

Yeah, I get misty-eyed thinking of that sumbitch Sephiroth killing Aerith.  And Rinoa crying over a fallen Squall.  Usually I’m a cynical, uncaring monster, but yeah I definitely felt many many emotions throughout VII, and VIII.

        • Anonymous

Yip games used to be all about the epic ending. Reward, and the story made us play to the end for that epic THANK YOU FOR PLAYING notice at the end of the credits.
Now we sit with so many games on the shelf that are only half complete, because once we have learnt the games mechanics (that is half the fun in playing games) the only thing we have left is the level grinding and cliff hanger story. Dark Souls is another beast altogether that kind of had a story but traded it in for great atmosphere.

Lets hope Bioshock 3 has a better ending than 1. But in this day and age Ken Levine did say that the ending is the last hour of the game. I kind of agree considering one needed 2hours of undivided attention at the end of Mass Effect 2.

Credits if done right can also be important. Like DOA4 that is a 3d fighter game and the end credits put every other game to shame. Aerosmith playing with graphical snipits of all the cgi was great. Then Street Fighter comes along and cant even get decent artists to do the story pics let alone the whacky CGI in DOA4. What a let down and yes we only play those games for multi-player but boy how standards have dropped.

I am still waiting for THANK YOU FOR PLAYING OUR GAME to be at the end credits this gen. Its like the consumer is the last thought with these huge gaming companies. Production babys get a better mention in the role of the video game. Even the movie industry thank the consumer for not pirating their copy and games are meant to be more personal because we invest more energy passion behind our hobby.

Maybe Im asking to much but it looks like the industrie has become a victim of its own success. Its turned into Hollywood.

Glad to see you are the other person out there that played Eternal Sonata. Very childish looking game but more mature story than Black Ops. Only true gamers see past the cover and appreciate the passion in those under the radar titles.

  • Jac7

Guinness has turned into a novelty for those who aspire to be amused for a relatively short period of time. The list only proves that which has always been abundantly clear – Call of Duty is a super popular franchise, just like the Twilight saga. Someone once told me that he was engaged in a conversation with a woman and the topic was Star Wars vs Twilight. She said she preferred Twilight because Star Wars was, um, a little farfetched. I’m not trying to say Black Ops has a shitty ending…but it has. Especially compared to the likes of Red Dead Redemption, and the Assassins Creed series.

    • Erwin Kempff

Its like kissing your really hot sister, in the end, you are still kissing your sister.

    Also Half-life 2?

  • Anonymous

I don’t even… :x how is Half Life 2 so far up? How is Super Mario Galaxy there? I mean I loved the game… but all Mario games end the same (at least 698523% of the time*)

    *not a scientifically proven figure

    • Nicholas Rowan

Statistically – there is a good chance your princess is in another castle.

      • Anonymous

        Statistically… I think this list is a lie :P
