GTA Online heists foiled by server issues

The unbelievably anticipated Online Heists mode for GTA V started rolling out this week, and is now live for just about everybody – other than Pc gamers of course, who have a while yet to wait for the game. As you’d expect, because smooth launches just don’t seem to happen anymore, the mode’s been hit with a few server issues. Numerous players have reported being unable to connect to the online service.

It’s something that Rockstar’s aware of, naturally.

“We are aware of some issues today with players having problems connecting to GTA Online,as well as issues with the Xbox Live service,” Rockstar says. “We are working to restore full access to GTA Online as quickly as possible.”

They have now, for the most part, done that – with servers for all versions of the game now reported as being “up.”

If you’re still having issues connecting to GTA Online, Rockstar’s offered a few networking tips.

  • Some players have found the following website useful for configuring ports with a static IP to attain a more open NAT type with many different router models: http://www.portforward.com

Also try:

  • 1. Make sure your router’s firmware is upgraded the latest version (very important).
  • 2. Unplug your router for 10 minutes and plug it back in. Some older routers degrade in performance over time until it is rebooted, similar to a PC.
  • 3. Disable any firewall or other network filtering for the game.
  • 4. Enable or disable uPnP (universal plug and play) on your router or the console settings.
  • 5. If you don’t care about security, enable DMZ (de-militarized zone) on your router for your console’s address. This turns off all of your router’s firewall features for that specific console.
  • 6. Contact your ISP and ask them what your DNS settings should be. Check the Primary and Secondary DNS settings on your console. For more information, see: http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/settings/connectadvance.html, http://support.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-live/connecting/connection-error-solution
  • 7. If you have a combination modem/router unit or ADSL, try setting the unit to “Bridge Mode” to bypass the router part of the hardware. If this fixes the issue, then you may be able to connect a second router between the combination unit and the console to dial the PPPoE connection.
  • 8. If you use an ADSL connection, see if dialing a PPPoE connection from the console improves the NAT Type. Contact your hardware manufacturer manual or ISP for detailed instructions.

GTA’s Online heists were delayed a number of times, launching over a year after they were supposed to – and the servers still went down. The PC version’s been delayed a handful of times too, though with issues like this perhaps that’s a good thing.

It’s like they copy and pasted the FAQ from Destiny. The game worked fine before all this. So it’s their side and their side only. Will keep on trying though. There’s money to be made

I am a bit confused here. If your connection is working and you can play other games online and then you cannot connect to the GTA V servers for the online heist stuff then you have to troubleshoot and fix your connection so that you can connect … Am I missing something here ? 🙂

Yes. The little omission the tech writer for Rockstar had to do: “Yes. We do believe our end users are stupid.”

Only the tech writer for Rockstar? Thought that was lesson number 1

And when those servers take upon them a heavy burden as players log on, somewhere, somehow, someone is going to stand about at Rockstar games, scratching their heads and going WHHHHYYYYYYY????

Can someone explain to me the legitimacy of “unplug your router for 10 minutes”? It doesn’t make any logical sense! Surely this is just a delay tactic or something? Like they make you feel like you’re doing something right? From a logical and technical expertise perspective, nothing in this statement sounds like it could fix anything except give external factors a chance to sort themselves out.

It keeps people from mailing GTA or spamming their forums for ten minutes.

By unplugging a router or any electronic it allows the capacitors to drain, clearing some of the transistors etc status, it definitely does help

So hold on… my connection is working perfectly to other sites/games. Unplugging my router will not fix a connection to a specific game.

If my router was having connection issues in the first place, I might go with your explanation, otherwise, no, still makes no logical sense.

When I got my ps4 I plugged it in, it downloaded the latest firmware automatically but when I tried to sign into the PSN it just sat there. Tried everything they had on the website, nothing helped, tried port forwarding, you name it I tried it. Nothing worked, eventually I reset my router out of sure desperation and bingo it worked. My point is electronics and software are fickle beasts, the smallest thing can be causing a conflict. The reason all the gaming sites suggest the things on our side first is cus 99% don’t check there side first and just bitch, at least if you’ve tried everything then you can email them and be like ” I tried everything so it must be something on your side so fix your shit bitch”

Xbox live crashed when GTA Online was launched… Xbox live crashed when Heists were released… The internet might die when GTA VI (probably V.2) gets released.
