Forza Motorsport 3 – Demo Impressions

So I am finally back from vacation which means that I was finally able to get my hands on the demo that was released for Forza Motorsport 3 this past week.

Many of you are waiting in anticipation for Forza 3 to hit shelves but couldn’t fork out for the demo bandwidth, which is why I am here. Thanks to the sponsored bandwidth that we receive from iPeg I was able to download the demo shortly after returning home and give it a go for around an hour and a half.

Hit the jump to read our initial impressions.

I do need to mention that while I am a huge petrol-head and love both the Gran Turismo and Forza series, I was a little skeptical about Forza 3, if only because it came out of nowhere at E3 and promised the world and was a little let down when the Forza 2 demo was made available before its release.

After spending time driving all of the available cars with different settings I can happily report that I am mightily impressed with what Turn 10 is going to deliver.

Visuals are fantastic, albeit maybe not exactly as fantastic as some screenshots would have you believe. They run at an incredibly smooth 60fps which is hard to believe when you see the visual difference between this and Forza 2. Just like in Forza 2, when replays are being viewed the game activates an extra bunch of filters and pretty things which drop the framerate but make the replays better looking when you don’t need those precious frames per second.

The new menus are slick and smooth and the music chosen so far fits really well and brings a newer cleaner feel to the Forza series. You will also be happy to know that the replay camera has been improved significantly, allowing you to view a default set of roadside TV camera angles and then switch between tons of other views that allow you to show off your liveries or capture specific angles for the replay editor (which isn’t available in the demo).

The cars feel absolutely fantastic, even when compared to Forza 2, Turn 10 have somehow managed to bring a greater feeling of weight to the cars and the physics engine is top notch delivering the best and most realistic feeling that I have experienced in a videogame thus far. I also gave the autobrake feature a go, as well as the rewind function and they have been implemented so well, that even the most noob-ish gamers will be able to get a ton of fun out of the game.

It looks like Forza 3 is going to be a big hit, with just about everyone able to enjoy it, but sometimes demos can give you a better result than a full title, especially when career modes are concerned.

For that reason, be sure to check our full review of Forza 3 around the time of its release.

  1. There was a whole bunch of trailers released while you were away. This being one of the best:

Any idea why it seems that none of the regular game retailers are able to give an exact Forza 3 release date … I know kalahari are struggling to get confirmation as to when it will arrive in SA :S and Take2 seems to have a vague date…

That would likely stem from lack of communication from the local distributor.

If ODST’s launch is anything to go by, it should be available on EA launch date, 23 October. At worst, it’ll be here by North American launch on the 27th.

How the hell does MS pick our local distros?
    From a lucky packet?

Or some kind of.. WE FAIL list?

Well if MS wants to show they mean business which they do. It will probably release at the same time as every where else….

And if not… Oh well saves me money for a while lol
