Flamebait Friday Debate: Is the Xbox 360 becoming redundant?

FFDxbox360.jpg

This week’s FFD focuses on our old friend, the Xbox 360.

We have seen countless amounts of fanboys on the net claiming that the Xbox 360 is becoming redundant, and we usually shrug it off as the usual trolling you would see on any given day, but do they actually have a point this time around?

Sure, the opposition have their own issues, but today we look at the problems with the Xbox 360 itself.

One of the biggest stories of the week is that the Xbox 360 just lost its console exclusive of Mass Effect 2, which in my mind is one of the greatest games to grace this generation of gaming. Heck, I liked it so much I gave it my first, and only ever perfect score.

When it comes to a gamer wanting to purchase a new gaming system, is there any good reason for him to want to pick up an Xbox 360 instead of a PC or that other HD gaming console? The console competition’s (free) online network is getting better with every update and also happens to pack a Blu-ray player (which if you haven’t noticed, is becoming a pretty popular format).

Kinect is only looking appealing to families and casuals for the most part, the hardcore exclusives are either failing to impress or being lost and then there is the fact that it no longer enjoys being significantly cheaper than the competition.

To put it quite simply: If you didn’t already own any gaming systems, is there really any reason for you to want to spend your hard earned money on an Xbox 360 instead of the competition if you could only afford one?

In trouble? Still worth it? Tell us what you think.

  1. In my humble opinion the xBox is currently the best console on the market, PC’s has toooo many hang-ups and PS3′ graphics are inferior. The new XBox 360 250GB is a beauty to behold!

I think the realations between EA and MS are getting sour. Look at the list of Windows Phone 7 games, nothing on their is from EA. And getting a PC would solve getting the complete ME experience but ME1 Classics on 360 also comes with the free dlc and retails for R199 or so.

Also it’s not that cheap to game from your couch in Full HD on PC. For R2499 you can get an Elite + Forza 3 + Halo ODST, two top games this gen that you won’t get on PC. Also don’t forget the huge back-end exclusive library.

@Nick- Mass Effect exclusivity may be gone but do you remember that new Crytek exclusive that was teased at E3? Codename: Kingdoms. And then Alan Wake has finally gotten up. So as one goes…another walks in 🙂

Well I recommend getting both, I’m an Xbox 360 addict, but must say some PS3 exclusives knock the Xbox 360 out of the park.

Sad news that ME2 are on it’s way to PS3, but hey they still won’t get to play the first installment…and the best game ever made….GEARS!!!… that’s right it’s staying where it belongs!

Also Xbox LIVE is much more superior than PSN, much more userfriendly and just offers so much more! When Xbox LIVE is officially launced in SA I think the best console out there is still the Xbox 360.

However as I mentioned earlier… if you can get both! Everyone needs a bluray player!

Did the xbox loose its mojo when it lost Bioshock, No.

Will it loose it with Me2 -, No.

Both consoles have a space, and give you the same type and quality of games, so for someone getting a console for a teenager the xbox is still cheaper than the competition, you win some games and you add some games.

At the end it is the gamers that win with this, because the more “Third” party games become
available to more gamers the better it is for the developers.

Take netflix for example, with it Microsoft added new features and content to the service , at the detriment of their own video marketplace. And this is one of the best things Microsoft have done is to add as much services and content to it.

personally, i think that the PS3 is a better buy if you don’t have a console. Same price, same power, but with Blu-Ray. It’s almost a no-brainer.

The XBOX has some awesome on-line features, most of which are still not available in SA (Netfix, ESPN)

I still prefer the xbox, but that’s more because all my friends have xboxes, so I get to meet them on-line and borrow their games, making it far more cost effective.

The only people who think the X360 is not dead, are the people that support it – but in comparison to the the PC and the PS3, there is nothing to it owning an X360 anymore. People still harp on about LIVE and GEARS as the defining factors that make it the better system. But that is merely clinging onto a notion in order to justify the ownership to oneself. If you have a PC and a PS3, you are more than covered and the X360 is a complete waste of time and money.

Also, as you guys know I was a complete X360 fanboy but now that I am not, I can say this as well: There are a LOT of unspoken problems with the X360 that just never seem to make it into these discussions. Things that we never really want PC and PS3 owners to know. For example, the sluggish frame rate in ME1. The constant freezing in half of your games. Turning power off but nothing happens. Your controller buttons becoming jiggly. The unsightly power supply. The noise. Ok a few points are already known, but my point is in hindsite, I can clearly say that the X360 is given more praise than its worth, and is an highly overrated product.

But if it keeps people like Fox1 and Jakes and Lazygamer occupied, and distracts them from joining the PS3 scene, then by all means it definitely must not become redundant. It has its place.

I got the PC, Xbox and PS3 but the PS3 gets the least play time at the moment. I just feel more at home on the Xbox, maybe because the majority of my friends have an xbox. When you think about it, the PS3 has all the advantages but I still play my Xbox 360 more, I don’t actualy know why.

    Dude, seriously?

Those point you mentioned on the Xbox 360 are utter BS:

“For example, the sluggish frame rate in ME1. The constant freezing in half of your games. Turning power off but nothing happens. Your controller buttons becoming jiggly. The unsightly power supply. The noise.”

Dude, none of these statements (except maybe the framerate in ME1) are true! I’m on my 3rd Xbox 360 (1st, spilled beer on the console, 2nd sold to acquire my 250GB slim) and never have I ever had any of these issues.

The PS3 takes forever to do the following:

    1.Power on/off
    2. Installing updates take forever, don’t plan on playing Uncharted 2 on date of purchase, the updates are insane!
    3. Too loud and noisy

Noise! What noise? Seriously have no idea what you on about! I’m no fanboi, but both consoles have their pro’s/cons!

Maybe the Xbox360 is becoming redundant, and time they release one with a bluray player? Only MS will know the reason for not doing it!

I have the PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii and I can get away with playing some decent games on my laptop as well, so I am pretty much covered for the moment, but I must say that if I had to only pick one to keep, I would cry a little inside. I love them all for their own reasons.

I still love the fact that Xbox Live is a more friendly environment, and the fact that all XBLA games have demos, with party chats and all that really make it a great online experience. That said, the PS3 has free online play (but I really really think they should have included headsets in the bundles by now) and Blu-ray.

Quite honestly? If somebody didn’t have a console, and was looking to pick one up – I’d more than likely recommend the PS3.

As a “core” gamer, it’s possibly worth having all 3, just for the extra experiences each offers. but your average joe? Just the Ps3

Got an xbox and enjoying it, but if I had to buy now my money would go the other way.

Bluray beeing reason one, got a HD TV now and lots of video shops are renting them now.

The exclusives reason two, Gears never pulled me in, Fahrenheit rocked and would love to play Heavy rain.

Don’t care for the whole Kinect vs move story, I’m enjoying my wii for motion.

So because a ME:2 port is making its debut 2 years later on the PS3, the xbox360 is suddenly redundant? lol, seriously?

The Move and Kinetic are a fail on both sides. I wanna sit on my ass and let my fingers to do all the work. If I wanted it otherwise, I would get a Wii.

The xbox360 has some awesome exclusives, just like the PS3, yet 99% of multiplatform titles are better on the xbox360, latest example is Mafia 2 coming out. Framerate issues, screen tearing, inferior graphics etc… Either lazy coders or it’s a difficult platform to code on.

Either way you look at it the xbox360, now with the slim is hand over fist better. Just look at the sales figures! For 4 years the PS3 has been saying “This is the year of the PS3”, yet it’s still miles behind.

My PS3 is currently my media center and my ps3 exclusive (about twice a year) player…

I’ve had a 360 since before it’s local release and a PS3 since the release of the Slim model last year. My 360 enjoys most of my playing time as I got the PS3 for Blu-Ray and worthwhile exclusives.

I don’t mind paying for Xbox Live as the services offered and usability is much better than PSN and it’s really not expensive. The fact that you have to pay also reduces the amount of idiots you have to put up with when playing online.

All that being said, if both consoles were released at the same time and price and I could only afford one it would be a very carefully considered decision as both have their pros and cons with neither really being superior.

    – Its because most of MS’s exclusives are third party and going to PS3 or first party on PC while Sony’s games are mostly first party and will never be on 360 or PS3.

    – You can sit on your couch with Move and Wii. I enjoyed Red Steel 2 just fine on my couch.

    – Times are changing and 90% of multi plat games are identical bar a few and vica versa like Final Fantasy XIII. Did it ever occur to you that 360 is holding back multi plat games like Arkham Asylum lookng like God Of War and Uncharted? Have you also noticed when developers lead on PS3 the Xbox version benefits immensely? Also stop deluding yourself Mafia 2 runs Shit on PS3 and 360. No one gives a shit about the grass. The frame Rate, tearing and jaggies look terrible on both so please take your blinkers off.

    – You can post as many figures as you want but the 360 is only 4 million ahead with a years head start and a cheaper price point. Quote me those figures again when the PS3 is selling at the same price as the Wii or 360. Interesting fact: The PS2 was cheaper than the PS3 at the 4 years stage of their console cycles.

Well now that ive put the fanboy in his place heres my opinion on 360 being redundant:

    – No i dont think 360 is redundant but they do need to take a step back and try and figure out what it is they are trying to achieve. They dont have the resources to support PC gaming, 360 gaming, windows mobile gaming and the Kinect which they seem to be treating as a different platform to 360 entirely. Also its time to invest in first party studios. The screwed up by closing Ensemnle, losing Bungie, losing the PGR guys and closing many other studios. They need to build a first party team thats as strong as Sony and Nintendo’s. A good example of this is Sony .For all the exclusives they announced for PSP, Move and PS3 they still somehow had enough resources to be showing off first party games for PSP2 behind closed doors at Gamescom.

Netflix is an awesome addition to xbox live (US), as is last.fm (although I prefer Spotify) and if you’re in the UK, SkyTV is pretty nifty too, just a pity we’re region locked in South Africa, and we’re definitely not getting either when Live (presumably-cautiously optimistic)launches here in December.

I have to ask Fox1 since you seem to be the number one Xbox 360 fanboy on here. I always hear ppl talk about being able to only afford one console. I call bullshit. I used to only game on PS2 last gen and the amount of money i spent on games that werent worth owning was ridiculous. Dont you think if you just avoided buying 6, 7 and 8 out of 10 reviewd games you could buy a PS3, 360 and even a Wii if you really wanted one. Hell instead of playing something like Bioshock 2, Crackdown 2, Too Human, Banjo you could play Uncharted, MGS, Metroid, Mario Galaxy, God of War, The Last Guardian? It only takes you not buying 6 crappy games to be able to afford a PS3 and not be so bitter do you even realize that? I got to tell you i just 😆 at your comments when i compare my gaming lineup in the next 18 months compared to yours. Ill be enjoying Gears, Metroid, Epic Mickey, Fable 2, GT5, LBP2, Uncharted 3, Zelda, The Last Guardian and damn so many games that are tripple AAA that i wont be able to afford ths shitty 6,7,8 and 9 out of 10 games. While you are on here talking about how non AAA games look inferior on PS3. Makes you think doesnt it? I mean i can understand the impulse to be critical because you dont have something i.e For me im jealous of PC gamers because i would love to play the Witcher 2 and CIV5 but i wont go on fanboy rages and will never want to see the downfall of PC gaming. You seem intent on hating the PS3 and it baffles me why. You could be such a happier gamer as a multi plat gamer. PS my theory about saving up applies to PC also but i have other reasons for not wanting the hassle of PC gaming.

    Totally unbiased answer, No !

Long winded flamebait answer, Every single console starts its journey to redundancy from the day it is launched. The redundant one with the YLOD function is a glorified paper weight that occasionally gets used as a blu-ray player while the the other one (not Wii that little box is not a console) the real gamers choice the XBOX will out live them all.

Stupid people blindly support one company which, given enough power will dominate the gaming industry with their own prices. Imagine the Xbox 360 did not exist, the PS3 would still be just as expensive as when it launched. Imagine Microsoft didn’t exist, what would have happened? I own a 360, haven’t touched it in a while because of matric, but even if I wasn’t the exclusives I’d be playing on it is Alan Wake and Gears of War. Every other game I want for it is multiplatform. PS3’s exclusives sell it for me, they are truly incredible.

Honestly I’d want both, coz I prefer the 360 controllers for FIFA and the above-mentioned exclusives, but if I’d have to choose…

But no, it’s not becoming redundant. Yet. There are some great games coming out in the near future (Gears 3, Crysis 2, Enslaved) and those should keep me interested.

There is no future for me… because AC!D smells of mothballs, Lans is probably certifiable and eager to eat my liver, Nick is Nick, Geoff is an Aussie and Fox1 is probably 3 years old. :ermm:

What you incredibly smart sony supporters don’t realize is that exclusives are only a fraction of a console’s lineup. My guess is it’s about 5%. I finished the “incredible” Killzone 2 in 4.5 hours, fiddled with the online part a bit, then it was over. The majority of this generation’s greatest games are multiplat -> RDR, Bioshock, Mass Effect (only recently), Half-Life, GTA 4, Borderlands, ect ect.
You sony loyalist are probably extremely frustrated by now. I mean, incredible after incredible exclusive gets released on the PS3 and still the xbox is selling well. Oh dear!

@Steve Hofmeyer clearly you dont understand a thing about sony fans, sony fans dont care about sales, sony fans care about exclusives and games selling well enough to get sequels, or spawn more exclusives.

on the other hand people like you seem obsessed and point out constantly how halo has sold 10 million etc, Steve if you wanna act smart do your research man

And Steve its not about Quantity its about Quality. I would rather have metal Gear Solid 4 then all other multiplatform titles so please, you dont understand sony fans and don’t pretend to

There’s no denying that the xbox 360 controller is ideal for shooters, but you do know you can use an adapter to allow you to use an xbox 360 controller on your PS3?

Google XCM Cross battle adapter. Works perfectly for Killzone 2

I have to agree with lans (very good point mate). It would be a sad day indeed if quality was measured only in sales, because sadly that would mean MacDonalds is the pinnacle of fine dining.

The Move bundles come with a ‘microphone’ now. The PS Eye has a pretty good microphone. Just as long as there aren’t a few people talking in the room.

GTA4 was a joke. Bioshock is amazing (started as an exclusive, Mass Effect also essentially an exclusive).

LittleBigPlanet, Heavy Rain, Alan Wake, Uncharted, God Of War, Gears of War, MGS4, Splinter Cell, Infamous, Valkyria Chronicles, Fable, MLB the Show, Left 4 Dead, Halo.

I would hardly say that the best games are multiplat. Almost all the must have games are multiplat with a few exceptions.

These debates always end the same way. Everyone feels the need to “defend” their console of choice with all kinds of facts and statistics and exclusives etc. The truth is simply that the best console to get is the one that best suits your needs.

Sales mean nothing and guess what exclusives mean nothing either. I love Gears and Uncharted but hate MGS4 and find Halo okay but nothing groundbreaking. I enjoy playing online with like minded people which is easier and more enjoyable on Xbox but I like watching movies in HD with 5.1 surround so Blu-Ray is a big +. So to satisfy my needs I have both.

If you need to base your decision on what other people say then you need to go out and get yourself a personality so you can decide for yourself what you like.

HAahahhaha!!! You guys are really precious. Tell that to the fanboys who jizzed their pants when the PS3 slim got released and it was selling like hot cakes. AS soon as Sony start to lose, you just change the measurement. It’s not sales anymore, itz tha qualiteez!

BTW, $$$ is a tangible measurement of success. Quality get’s measured how exactly? At the end of the PS3’s life cycle, management will present to shareholders that the PS3 ended up third, but no worries guys, we had tons of quality 🙂

According to gamerankings, 8 of the top 10 rated games for the Xbox is multiplat. 7 for PS3. The exclusives obviously gets all the attention in the media because of the fanboy wars but when you put all the fanboy bs asside, there are more than enough quality multiplats to justify buying any console.

The problem with the argument is that there are hundreds of multiplatform games released and only a ‘handful’ of exclusives. But you are right, according to the data multiplatform games do seem like the better choice. I’d don’t necessarily agree with the data since GTA is the top game on most sites, but the average ‘gamer’ might see it like that.

    Dear Steve
Why are you so concerned about Sales? do you own shares in microsoft?. your saying ps3 is 3rd and all that crap, but the ps3 has sold 38 million, and the Xbox 360 41 million, plus the XBox 360 had a year and a half head start in japan, and europe.

So seriously Steve you are a very short sighted person, you are clearly a person of average intelligence and i suggest we end this discussion for your own sake. The more you speak the more it shows Steve…….im truly sorry i wish you were born smart.

    Yours Truly

“PS3 TROLLS DETECTED.” Good greef I’ve never seen such blatant PS3 Trolling since VGCHARTZ forums.Lets look at the facts( not that it matters to SONY’s Blue Ray brainwashed hordes) the XBOX 360 is leading in sales, 5.3 Million to be exact and as we speak it is and has been outselling the PS3 for 10 months and the Wii for 9 since the lauch of the 360 S. So my question is how is it dead? FACT 2:Graphics don’t mean shit without software(and Xenos is more powerful than RSX)! If they did the Wii wouldnt exist let alone be so successful. FACT 3: The XBOX 360’s console exclusives have sold more to date than PS3 exclusives. FACT 4: The Xbox 360 has several 10 Million plus sellers were as the PS3 has none. FACT 5: Multiplatform tiltes not only look better on XBOX but actually sell better aswell (with the exception of FIFA and other euro centric games). FACT 5: WHo ever wins America (plus UK) wins the war! And the FINAL FACT: The PS3 is an a epic failure by any measure, and a very expensive lesson for SONY. They might be kissing your ass now only because they need to. The XBOX 360 is the true successor to the PS2 in many ways and the similiaries between XBOX 1 and PS3 make me break out and laugh. So tell me who beat who?
