syndicate

The original Syndicate, for those of you too young to remember, was an isometric cyberpunk real-time tactical game from Peter Molyneux’s Bullfrog Studios, the developers behind gems like Populous, Magic Carpet, Theme Hospital and Dungeon Keeper.

It was a fantastic – and violent – game, where you lead a squad of agents doing cool things like assassinations, brainwashing and blowing stuff up with the awesomely overpowered gauss gun. Fans rejoice, because it looks like EA – who acquired bullfrog in 1995 – might be rebooting the series.

Superannuation noticed three new trademark filings by EA relating to the series.

One of the trademarks relates to "entertainment services, namely, providing an on-line computer game; provision of information relating to electronic computer games provided via the Internet". Another mentions "computer game software; downloadable computer game software via a global computer network and wireless devices; videogame software."  The last protects future toys, card games and the like.

Could a new syndicate be headed to download services like XBLA and PSN? Rumour has it that EA hired Swedish developers Starbreeze, the folks behind the Riddick games and The Darkness, to revive classic EA franchises. Looks like one of those might be Syndicate.

Just please don’t turn it in to a FPS, like they’ve done with the Xcom reboot. Please?

Syndicate was awesome. Brings back amazing memories. Gauss gun was great…but the understated ‘persuadatron’ was even better. I’d have the whole damn city follow me! Maybe this will be my first XBLA game

Syndicate Wars was actually the sequel to Syndicate and wasn’t as good as Syndicate, though I loved both. Especially in Syndicate Wars where you’ve got the Ghost in the Shell advertising happening almost everywhere.

That’s true, by the way, I’ve been playing some of my old PC games (those that are kind enough to install on my Win 7), and it’s actually amazing how games have changed over the years, and not entirely for the better. Don’t get me wrong, there have been some awesome games the last couple of years, but the vast majority of recent games pale in comparison to some of the classics.
