DmC’s looking hot, out next week!

RUNDmC

Holy hell! Heavenly Sword and Enslaved Developer Ninja Theory’s Devil May Cry reboot is out next week! We’ve been pretty excited for the game and it nearly, nearly slipped by us…under the radar. Yup, the same DmC that caused huge fan outrage when it was initially announced will be upon us next week…and word is, it’s really, really good!

Well, that’s according to the handful of early reviews that are available in the public domain at the moment. We always caution against believing reviews that are out much earlier than they ought to be; they smack of “high scores in exchange for exclusivity” deals. Still, we’re inclined to believe this one, because our own time with the game has shown it to pretty damned polished, retaining the “feel” of Devil May Cry, even though it has a new, more western aesthetic.

Print magazine Gamemaster says it’s still all about  "nailing increasingly ludicrous combos, juggling enemies through a mixture of sword and gunplay, and figuring out what demons need smacking with what weapon" in their review, scoring the game 89%.

"DmC remains a stunning action title," they say. "A visual feat, and a brave move in a new direction for the series."

Swedish Magazine Level has given the game a 9/10, with the official Xbox Magazine awarding it 90%. Germany’s Play3 Magazine has also gone with 8.9. I’ll reserve judgment until I’ve played the game through myself, but I’m becoming pretty excited for this brave reboot of the game that made combotastic hack n’ slash games a thing.

Here’s the game’s latest trailer, a CGI effort.

According to Capcom, “DmC will retain the series’ signature mix of sword and gunplay but add additional weapons, all new powers and a revitalized gameplay system as players encounter the game’s devilish mix of enemies and navigate the rich, interactive environment.”

I'm old, grumpy and more than just a little cynical. One day, I found myself in possession of a NES, and a copy of Super Mario Bros 3. It was that game that made me realise that games were more than just toys to idly while away time - they were capable of being masterpieces. I'm here now, looking for more of those masterpieces.
