Crytek – “Single-player experience has to go away”

Most of you know that I seldom play multiplayer games online. It’s not because I don’t play well with others, hate human beings or suck at games (though all three of those could well be true). It’s just that I prefer my videogames to be solitary escapism. I like shutting myself off from the rest of the world and retreating to the realm of fantasy. Crytek wants that to go away.

“I think the notion of a single-player experience has to go away,” says Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli to IGN. “However, I’m not saying that there will be no single-player experiences… It could be it’s called Connected Single-Player or Online Single-Player instead.”

Essentially, he wants the single player game to evolve, to be connected – whether that be through social interaction or single player games with MMO tendencies.

“Online and social can reignite single-player in a new type of context and provide benefits that will make you want to be a part of a connected story-mode rather than a disconnected story-mode.

“Sure, if the technology forces you to play a traditional single-player game online, that doesn’t make sense but if it’s offering actual benefits to be online then you want to be part of it.”

If it means things more along the lines of Journey or Dark Souls, which used more subtle ways of including other players in your game, then I suppose that’s be ok – but if every single game starts telling me about how my friends have just beaten my score, jumped further or raced faster, I might just unplug my Ethernet cable.

I'm old, grumpy and more than just a little cynical. One day, I found myself in possession of a NES, and a copy of Super Mario Bros 3. It was that game that made me realise that games were more than just toys to idly while away time - they were capable of being masterpieces. I'm here now, looking for more of those masterpieces.

No no no! See! I knew this was going to happen. DiabloIII set the trend and now everyone wants to jump on the bandwagon because they think it’s what we want. No no no no no! It’s not what we want. It’s simply that we aren’t given a choice in the matter!

    I give up!

    • Sir Captain Rincethis

Looks Sir through bloodshot eyes, “I agree brother, only way to make the noises go is to drink” Hands half FULL bottle of Bells to thee.

      • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

*downs the bells and hits Crytek over the head with empty bottle*

        • http://twitter.com/DanielKeevy Daniel Keevy

Sir Rants-Lot Llew used bottle. It was not every effective.

    • Darth_Clericus_The_Ultimate

Ya saw it coming as well. Are these guys blind?? Didnt they not see the fan backlash???

      • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

All they saw were the figures. They thought that because it sold well it was a success. The truth is much, much worse though. The truth is they did serious damage to their own image and have lost the trust of a lot of gamers.

If Crytek wants to follow suit then they must. They will also realise their fault as Blizzard did (Yes Blizzard realised their mistake because the console version seems to be launching with an offline mode)

    • http://twitter.com/DanielKeevy Daniel Keevy

Don’t you see? They’re trying to help you realise the best way to play a game? Never mind you’ve been doing it alone for so long. You are blind, and they are your eyes.

Actually, Apple secretly has stakes in all major game publishers and devs. Not only will they dictate how you use your PC (a MAC is a PC – get over it), phone and what emails you are allowed to receive via iCloud, they will now dictate how you play your games as well.

  • Sir Captain Rincethis

If I wanted a social life, I’d stop dressing in pink spandex and lose the wig with a monkey in. I HATE it when these fucks try and TELL use what we are supposed to WANT from games. I think I’ll find this cod-dicked-moron on twitter and say as much.

    • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

      Thanx for the image….

      • Sir Captain Rincethis

The cod dick (get the reference?) or pink spandex? :)

        • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

          you in pink spandex

  • Folly

So basically because Crytek are incapable of writing a decent single player storyline in any of their games their proposed solution is to do away with Single-player altogether?

    • Banana Jim

      Essentially yes!

    • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

      Wow. Pretty accurate summary

    • http://twitter.com/Jeanww08 JHN

      Bingo.

  • matthurstrsa

What’s that in the corner? Skyrim, laughing its head off.

    • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

      Dude, you rock

    • http://twitter.com/DanielKeevy Daniel Keevy

      THIS!

  • matthurstrsa

Anyway, just split the two. If single player does awfully sales wise, then do away with it. But don’t mess with my single player!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=715862632 Johan Troffel Fourie

It’s called “SINGLE” player for a reason. Otherwise it’d just be co-op. I want what Yerli’s smoking. Seems like legit shit.

  • Banana Jim

I think Crytek operates on the idea that regardless of running foul with gamers, just so long as the unwashed masses have the words Crytek on their lips, it’s all good. Good or bad publicity, it really doesn’t matter.

Next week, they’ll add to the inane comments with some yarn about how the keyboard and mouse needs to be redesigned for their games, or how kinect is perfect for Crysis 3, or how next gen consoles could never run Crysis 4, or how cats love Crytek, or how when chimpanzees are exposed to Crysis 3, they immediately start crafting stone tools.

It doesn’t matter what is said, just long as we’re talking about Crytek.

  • undercoverMunky

    “Online Single-Player”

They already tried that with DRM. :-P

  • Darth_Clericus_The_Ultimate

OH YOU MEAN LIKE DIABLO 3!!?!?!?!?!? THAT WORKED OUT SO WELL DIDNT IT CERVAT!?!?!?!
    Ass.

    • http://twitter.com/DanielKeevy Daniel Keevy

      Error 3006.

  • ElNicko

I personally think mr cevat yerli deserves a high five. In the Face . With a Flaming Chair !!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=730342287 David Muller

How else are they meant to incorporate micro transactions in single player.

  • http://twitter.com/GideonFCarstens Gideon Carstens

Argument analogy: watching a movie with my friends who can talk with and interrupt me any time is superior to watching the movie alone. Right…

    • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

      Have a bells!

  • Anon A Mouse

Really these people are surely trying their utmost to have me hang up my joystick and abandon games all together. What on earth have I ever done to them?

    • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

You made them rich by supporting them when they started out back in the day.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=715862632 Johan Troffel Fourie

Yea, but when they started out back in the day, they all were promising devs/publishers. Greed has befallen the game industry. It’s like election days filled with lies and deceit – just that every day is election day in the AAA game industry. Sad story.

        • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

          Yep.

  • http://twitter.com/rgtechnologies Rudi van der Walt

Wtf?? that will be such a dumbass move. I play games for my own entertainment, and 99/100 times I do so alone because that’s how I prefer it damnit.

  • http://twitter.com/DanielKeevy Daniel Keevy

Well, considering the market they specialise in, I guess it makes sense. If the CEO of Bethesda or Gabe said this, then I’d be rolling around on the floor trying not to cry.

  • Weanerdog

Crytek boardroom CEO: ” Hey guys how can we make more money on games?
Guy at the back:” Cut back on Staff costs”
    CEO:” Like who?”
Guy:”Story guys, you know the writers”
CEO:”Thats crazy who plays a game without a story”
    Guy:”C…O..D”
    CEO:”Right, fire them all”

    • Sir Captain Rincethis

      LIKE A WINNER!

  • Red Worked

Down with these MMO tendencies, down!

  • Deon Steyn

I just hate people in general, that’s why I play games so that I don’t punch anybody. Now they want to make me interact with other people? The troll in me will come forth and sow misery on them!

  • Brady miaau

Certain activities are just more fun together, right?

if good for some, must be good for all!

I, like Sir Geoff Tim, do not want MY fun time, MY escapism, changed or ruined by some idiot somewhere. Even if multi-player is more fun, better challenge and so forth, I still do not care. MY TIME, MY RULES. Well, my wife rules, but I can play game.

  • Purple_Dragon

The minute that happens is the minute I stop play games. Stupid fucks, I want to play games on my own. That is the whole point of gaming, escape to another world, I don’t want to even know real people exist when I’m off visiting a different place.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Theo-Steenekamp/100000464298189 Theo Steenekamp

but but… I like being forever alone:( …. Guess I will just have to tease and be an ass to everyone to isolate myself (the way MP games are already)… A self made singleplayer experience like no other.

  • crack2483

    Maximum bullshit

  • Johan du Preez

ROFL this is rich because they cant make a proper single player game they say it must fall away

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jason-Johnson/592069597 Jason Johnson

Its simple really. I’m a busy guy. I play games to escape. Some people watch TV. I play at irregular times for irregular periods. Mostly less than an hour and late at night. I don’t have the time, strength or inclination to consider other online players. Selfish perhaps, but fact. So… if Crytek stops making single-player games, I stop buying them. Simple. And if all single-player games go away, I’ll start watching more TV and use my mouse for browsing.

  • iPrimal

I’ll burn my motherf****** router! I swear to god! I want single player games! At least they only make games that I don’t care about.

  • Ocelotty1

No single player; no sale – simple.
