Visually, Crysis 2 is a remarkable achievement in graphical design, a game that will easily stand the test of time, something that is rare in today’s market. While there are plenty of gorgeous textures and well animated characters, it’s the lighting effects that are particularly outstanding, resulting in areas that look almost photorealistic.

While there’s no doubt that the PC version is superior when it comes to visuals, the PS3 and Xbox 360 still manage to knock the game for a six, resulting in a game that runs at a consistently smooth rate, with differences that seem marginal when compared side to side.

New York is stunningly realised, and the war torn streets are littered with all sorts of debris while CELL paramilitary groups engage in battle with Ceph forces. Subtle visuals, such as Alcatraz leaning against objects or automatically grabbing ledges when he jumps up help to push the realism in the game that little bit further, while facial animations help give Crysis 2 that emotional edge it needs, while a Hans Zimmer orchestral score hammers in the epic situation that players find themselves in.

Scoring:

Gameplay: 9.0/10

With a redesigned focus on the nanosuit, Crysis 2 gives players a more rewarding gameplay experience, instead of punishing players for using innovative gameplay strategies like its predecessor did.

Design and Presentation: 8.0/10

It’s gorgeous and beautiful, making dirty battlegrounds look like works of art. Whether you’re playing on a console, or are one of the seven people in the country who can afford a PC that can run the game with maximum settings enabled, this game will not disappoint on a visual level. The storyline and some random glitches may become irritating if they occur, but it’s a small price to pay for such gaming goodness.

Value: 9.0/10

By bucking the trend and presenting players with a well-balanced campaign mode that last more than the industry standard of 4-6 hours, players will find plenty of value for their hard-earned buck, while replay options help keep the game fresh. And the multiplayer isn’t too bad either.

Overall: 8.5/10

Bringing with it a much needed physicality that helps emphasise the role of a badass super-soldier that players take charge of, Crysis 2 fires on all cylinders, giving gamers a title that is a visceral treat for the eyes, without sacrificing the core gameplay in the process.
