Yes, you read correctly, Capcom expects MvC 3 to usurp the legendary Street Fighter’s spot on the sales charts.
Chatting to EventHubs, Capcom’s vice-president of strategic planning and business development (thats one long business card) Christian Svensson stated that it was his “expectation” that the cross-universe over-the-top fighting game will do better. Capcom plan to make sure of that via “marketing [that is] at least as aggressive if not more so than we did with Street Fighter 4”.
Bold words, Christiaan.
Putting that statement into context, the “vanilla” Street Fighter 4 sold 3.18 million copies across the PS3 and X360 (according to VGChartz). If you include Super Street Fighter 4’s sales, that figure jumps to 4.47 million copies. That’s a lot, especially when you consider fighting games are somewhat of a niche market.
Svensson believes MvC3 has the mass market appeal to reach those lofty sales targets, since it has a “more accessible but still deep fighting system that’s fun for casual players and EVO attendees.” I have no idea how a MvC game could be competitive at EVO level, as balancing a game with this many characters will be a nightmare. We will find out when its released early next year, and I have faith Capcom will blow our collective minds.
