[Updated] Breaking News: Xbox 360 250GB Local Pricing Announced [Exclusive] Smoking
   August 5th, 2010 clock image 1:02 pm

Xbox360S.jpg

Ladies and Gentlemen we have some breaking news regarding the new Xbox 360 “S” 250GB.

We contacted Microsoft in South Africa recently a few times to try and get some more information regarding the price and release date for the system.

Details after the jump.

Ok, so we have official confirmation that the new Xbox 360 250GB will be sold at an RRP of R3,199.99. Not too shabby at all considering the much bigger hard drive, improved reliability and cooling, built-in wi-fi and so on.

What do you guys think of the price point? Did you expect it to be less or more? This means that a new system as well as a Kinect purchase will look to set you back R5,200.00. A little steep overall. but then again, that’s the kind of money we were throwing around for single PS3′s a short while back.

[ Update: Just wanted to update with a reminder that the price of the 4GB console was already revealed to us a while back, and it will retail for R2399.00. More info on the 4GB and Kinect pricing here. ]

No release date has yet been given, but keep a look out for more information soon.

Fable 3 Opening Cinematic – Best Chicken-Cam Ever

Fable 3 Ditching Kinect Support (For Now)

  • Uberutang

Price is really not bad at all, but still around R500 more to beat the PS3 as a good overall buy I think.

  • Bobby Kotick Elephant Ears

I’ll admit the price is very good and it would be an excellent deal for someone who needs a new console (sigh if only it was released last year), but sadly even at such a sweet price (for a 250Gb), the boat has sailed for me.

  • squirrely

I expected more. Please ask the “contacts” about the Halo Reach Console?

  • RSA-Ace

Nice price but with Kinect it’s just too expensive for me with everything else that’s out there.

  • Dan

Few hundred more to get a blu-ray player as well. If I were buying today I’d be looking at the PS3 instead. Very different to the scenario a few years ago when the Xbox was definitely an option due to its much lower price. And with Microsoft continuing to shaft their earlier customers by replacing defective units with the same defective product I’m not inclined to recommend to anyone they buy this new model.

  • Bobby Kotick

Especially if you take into account a 120Gb PS3 slim runs at about R2999, and you can always just buy a bigger HD for it with the balance.

As for the steep kinect + xbox slim price, I wonder how many families will be keen to get it come Christmas?

  • batman

Wait, didn’t they say that the new Xbox 360 S will have the same RRP as the old Elite? How is this news?

  • piet

No thanks. PS3 has much more value.

  • http://www.designwave.co.za Nick de Bruyne

Because as you know, especially in South Africa, nothing is certain until it’s made official. We have had way too many occasions where everyone expects one thing, but then the final details are announced and not really in line with what we all expected.

You just never know in this place to be honest.

  • piet

Kinect is 3 times more expensive than the PS Move starter kit according to Mygaming’s article about local pricing. I like paying 3 time less for stuff…

  • riezo

That is an excellent price imo. The only thing seperating it from a PS3 now is the PS3′s BD.

Sony really have to bring the 320gb SKU’s here, and drop the 250gb’s to sub R3600.

  • bokka1

LOL. Nearly thought it’s Friday. I think it is a very good price. I paid R2300.00 for my PS3 and it was still about R1300.00 too much.

  • ettienem

Again SA is ripping the system.
I can buy the 250GB in the UK for like R2300

    http://www.game.co.uk/Consoles/Xbox-…vgZ1z13mmvZ68l

    or pre-order for R2900

    http://www.game.co.uk/Consoles/Xbox-…vgZ1z13mmvZ68l

  • RSA-Ace

Why? 320GB is overkill more the majority of people. I have a 250GB and I’m probably on 40GB at most. I’d rather the console have 120GB and be cheaper.

  • jonni

yep definitely. Everywhere else they’ve kept the price the same with the new model. R200 more and no game incl. Big ripoff.

  • koldFU5iON

and you’re forgetting to add Tax + shipping, it’s all good and well to shout poverty but you need to understand that transporting goods costs money and is essentially why it’ll always cost us that much more than overseas.

  • Bobby Kotick Capitalist

Geography my good man, we’re not an island floating next to Europe or America, but actually on the other side of the planet. It costs money to ship goods to us (especially when it’s bulk shipped), and although I do think importers are screwing us around a bit, and local distributors are evil scum, at the end of the day, it boils down to business.

  • ettienem

These things are manufactured in China so it also needs to be shipped to the rest of the world, so I dont understand R1000+ difference from retail store to retails store.

  • squirrely

    @koldFU5iON – but you’re forgetting something, they’re not buying it at rrp…

  • http://www.designwave.co.za Nick de Bruyne

Squirrely does have a good point that a lot of people forget, they are buying at cost price, not from a store then shipping it over.

  • ettienem

Agree with that. I would say if SA started it at R2500 in retail stores it would be worth it

  • http://www.lazygamer.co.za Geoffrey Tim

On consoles, I think you’d be surprised at the cost price. In most cases they’re sold at a loss. In better scenarios, distributors and retailers are lucky to make 5% in profit each.

  • RSA-Ace

It’s more due to demand. The higher the demand the lower the price can be.

  • Bobby Kotick Capitalist

Simple, the production cost of an item never equals what you sell it for. It might be incredibly cheap to produce in China (last I heard production and assembly of an xbox 360 was as low as $99, but value is added because of branding. (In a nutshell you’re ultimately buying the brand not the hardware, which probably explains the shoddy motherboards and disk drives).

The fact that the items are generally first shipped to Europe and then to us add transportation costs. This holds true even if it’s imported directly from China to South Africa (unlikely).

Now if you had a direct connection with the manufacturers in China…

  • Bobby Kotick Capitalist

And then as RSA-ACE mentioned economics play a major role as well, and although supply and demand plays a major factor, there are a number of hidden costs that you need to recoup (be it initial research and development costs, advertisement, marketing etc.).

Anyway, don’t get me wrong, I don’t support high prices of consoles, and let’s not beat around the bush, even at R3,199.99 the 250Gb xbox slim is pretty damn expensive (and well beyond what the vast majority of South Africans would feel comfortable with) and even more so if they’re ultimately just as unreliable as their precursors.

  • riezo

They exist in Japan lol. Im speaking about whats been announced, not what I’d like.

  • Bobby Kotick puts the C back into Capitalism

In that case ettienem the only solution is that you start an import-export business in South Africa, so that retailers can sell consoles at R2500 (and still make a profit).

  • jonni

How do you know that they don’t come straight from china? It would make way more business sense to get them straight from china. And also you got it so wrong… higher demand = higher price. For a person who make such smartass comments such as “Geography my good man, we’re not an island floating next to Europe or America, but actually on the other side of the planet” you don’t seem to have as many braincells as you try and portray:P

  • ettienem

I just don’t understand how retailers in the UK can sell at £199 that is after tax and profit has been added. How can SA charge that much more for the same product?

  • lans

    too expensive!!!! way too expensive.
kinect will die a slow and painful death like hd dvd unless they bundle every single kinect ever released theres no way kinect will make it.

    R5300!!!! wowowowowowoow for kinectimals???!!!
, this without any must have game games???!!!!

no offence i like xbox 360 but this is a very big fail written all over it. it might sell well in beginning but kinect cant even function properly at all times in stores how are they gonna convince people to shell R5300 after rrod!!!

very wishful thinking you can quote me on this kinect will sell less than 10 million units ltd. unless they bundle it with every console coming out in the next 3 years

  • WeRRieS ZA

    Definitely getting one ASAP!

  • Christo Le Grange

sheesh, but you debating like mad!i also though it was Friday.
When I first read the article, i thought its not a bad price, but after reading all the comments, including Koticks neigh saying, i have to agree….
its a bit pricey considering what the folks pay overseas.

  • Bobby Kotick rides the wave

I’m not sure if you got the memo, but calling or insinuating that someone is “dumb on the internet” is arguably one of the most overused memes on the Net, but sadly it does not validate your point either. In reality it merely highlights your own limitations. Whether or not I am in fact highly intelligent is immaterial to the matter at hand.

We’ve explained to you why goods are more expensive on our side of the world, but as I explained to ettienem, there’s really nothing stopping you from starting your own export-import company with the aim of not only undercutting other importers but allowing retailers to still post a reasonable profit, while consoles are sold in SA for a reasonable buck.

  • Uberutang

I ship stuff in from China all the time (mostly miliray gear and goods) and shipping is not THAT expensive if you do slow mail.

It just takes 20 days to get here :(

But I am just a private id doing this, not a major corp…

  • Bobby Kotick Tim

Uber are you to blame for all the cheap Chinese toys and clothing?
