Breaking News: Gears of War 3 Dedicated Servers Report Shot Down By Epic Games Flame On
   June 28th, 2010 clock image 3:23 am

Gears3.jpg

The news has been flying around the internet thanks to Kombo.com who reported that Mark Rein had confirmed dedicated servers for Gears of War 3.

As I had my own concerns about the effect that dedicated servers would have on the newly announced Xbox Live regions, I contacted Epic Games to see if they would be supporting regions such as ours.

Much to my surprise, I received an email from an Epic Games Community Support Specialist shortly thereafter, denying that the report was correct.

More after the jump.

The email I received was pretty straightforward, saying only the following:

“Mark Rein was misquoted. We have not announced dedicated servers.”

What do you all make of this? Do you feel disappointed or happy that Gears of War 3 may or may not be utilising dedicated servers?

In my personal opinion, it all comes down to whether or not companies like Epic Games are going to be willing to host dedicated servers all around the world, rather than just the USA and Europe and Asia because if that’s the case, the rest of us are all pretty well screwed.

    Dedicated or STFU.

    If they sell a game in a region, they have to support it 100%, or charge us less for SP only games.

  • Steve Hofmeyr

    I’m not aware of any console game that hosts dedicated servers in SA. I’d rather take P2P hosting that overseas dedicated servers.

  • Uberutang

    Does not have to be local mate, Just need good netcode, ALA, BFBC2. Or KZ2. or MAG.

    All great MP games with servers far far away.

  • Steve Hofmeyr

    MW2 still has less lag than BFBC2 and KZ2 thanks to P2P (for us folks in SA). In KZ2 it happens quite often that I kill an enemy just as he’s killing me resulting in a double kill.
    BFBC2 is also quite terrible in relation to MW2 local hosting.

  • http://www.designwave.co.za Nick de Bruyne

    @SteveH

    Yeah, but it’s because we don’t have local dedicated servers. Players in the USA for instance, have constant lag free games at all times and never have to rely on a fast host

    xsever….use the program they used with section 8 that allows players to set their computers up as a game sever…

  • Steveisaretard

    Dedicated is better in KZ2 than any game online in any console so far. The reason why both of you died is because both of you saw ea other at the same time with the same response tme WHAT I LIKE TO CALL FAIR PLAY. unlike MODERN CRAPFARE2 where as the host is the one getting all the kills because he sees u first and has a time advantage over u :angel:

  • Das Bork

    @Steveisaretard
    Killzone 2 doesn’t run dedicated servers. If that’s the case then Gears of War, Gears of War 2, Halo 3, Halo 3 ODST, The Darkness, Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter and Rainbow Six Vegas 2 does too.

    Dedicated servers are about one device acting host, independently. Which means the same device is not used to play the game, but merely run the server. And Killzone 2 isn’t especially flawless for its multiplayer performance – it’s good enough but calling it the Best is quite a stretch.
