Borderlands 2 addresses the original game’s complaints

With Bioshock Infinite and the Tomb Raider reboot having slipped to next year, there’s little on my radar for the remainder of the year. Sure’ there’s Dishonored – which looks like it’ll fill the gaping void left by Infinite nicely, the bizarre yet endearingly charming Lollipop Chainsaw, Darksiders and of course, Far Cry 3 – but the one game I’m salivating over right now is Borderlands 2.

I poured way too many hours of my life in to the first, co-op shooty loot-a-thon – and can’t wait for its sequel. The first game, addictive as it was certainly had its share of issues; issues Gearbox is hard at work resolving for this sequel; most notable framerate, stability and the first game’s rather terrible inventory system.

“We’re entering the phase of development right now where we are focusing on framerate and stability, so it’s too early for me to give any final numbers, but you will see an improvement over the first game,” borderlands 2 producer Matt Charles said in a Q&A on the US PS Blog.

Matt Charles also says the game’s inventory system – which he believes “sucked” is getting a major overhaul.

“We decided to remove carryable health packs and instead fill that need with new relics and shields that can help keep you out of that emergency state to begin with. The result is a more fluid combat experience since now you’re not worrying about when the best time to pause the game is and you still get that fun sense of preparing for a battle by choosing the right gear,” he said. “Health Packs will still appear and drop and they will now heal you up in the middle of battle. We have a completely new inventory screen and all of the other interface screens have received various upgrades. There’s a lot more useful data for gear comparison and also more descriptive text on the item cards as well. Money and ammo now automatically pick up if dropped from enemies as well.”

One of the game’s biggest problems was a lack of environmental variation – by the end of it, gamers were tired of the big desert. when asked if we’ll see a bit of variety, Charles responded with:

“Absolutely! We’ve shown a tundra, cavern, grasslands, and Hyperion tech environments so far, but there are many more in the game – I think you’ll enjoy the environmental diversity in BL2.”

In our own hands-on preview of the game, it certainly seems there’ll be quite a number of new enemy types as well. I’m excited – and the recent reveal of the game’s ridiculously awesome collector’s editions has that excitement going in to overdrive. We’re still waiting on information as to whether those ludicrously expensive, but fantastic editions will be available locally – but what we do know is that the sexy loot chest is big enough to hold your wiener.
