Angry Birds, the mobile game phenomenon that has you hurling vitriolic avians across the screen ad verdant swine is available on just about everything capable of playing videogames. In many cases, it’s largely free – though it’s supported by annoying adverts. Ad free versions of every single game in the series, for example, can be had for a mere $6. Total. They’re now headed to consoles – the Xbox 360, PS3 and 3DS -  in retail form with new platform specific features.  Oh, and at a significant premium.

Activision, who’ll be publishing the Rovio developed games  say the console versions will be in  “stunning HD” with “totally new controls built for a living room”, while the 3DS game is billed as “the first truly new Angry Birds handheld experience”.

“With Angry Birds Trilogy, every version supports the unique experience tailor-made for the platform,” said Rovio’s Petri Järvilehto. “In addition to normal gamepad controls, with Xbox 360 we support Kinect for easy family-friendly game play. We’re seeing that resonate strongly especially with the younger audience.”

“With PS3 you can play also with the Move controller. On Nintendo 3DS we’re supporting Stereoscopic 3D and Streetpass.”

So how much would you pay for Angry Birds on your console – now with added waggle or squinting? The 3DS version will retail for $29.99 while the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions will have a recommended retail price of $39.99. Is the added functionality worth paying such a premium? I can’t honestly say it is.

Funnily enough, Angry Birds was available on the PSN as a PlayStation Mini, even charting as the one of the most downloaded PSN games for a while – but it’s since mysteriously disappeared.

I think we know why.
