3rd party games better on Wii U, says Nintendo

Speaking to CNN, Nintendo of America president Reggie “Beefcake” Fils-Aime has tried to put paid to word that Nintendo’s Wii U is graphically on par with the current consoles, the PS3 and Xbox 360, saying that 3rd party games look better on Nintendo’s new platform.

“The specs are quite different than the competitive systems; much more graphically intensive,” he said.

“If you do a side-by-side comparison you would see that third-party games like Call of Duty look dramatically better on our system.”

Funnily enough, Eurogamer’s Digital Foundry did a recent head-to-head of the aforementioned Call of Duty – and found that to not quite be the case. They found the Wii U version to sit at graphical parity with the Xbox 360 version, ahead of the compromised, inferior PS3 one – but unable to match either in terms of framerate. It’s worth noting that the Wii U, as a platform, is in its infancy – and in future it should match or better its console counterparts.

So what then, of the next Xbox and PlayStation? Will the Wii U still compete?

“In terms of what competition’s going to do in the future: we’ll see. We know based on our own development this two screen experience really is the next innovation that consumers are gravitating to,” he said.

“It’s selling extremely well here in the Americas. Already stocks are quite low in the marketplace; we’re rapidly replenishing. So for us, certainly the consumer’s deciding that the innovation is well worth their investment.”

I’m pretty excited for the new Nintendo DS XXXXXXL Wii U, which will be out locally at the end of this week – more for new experiences than for purdy graffix.

I'm old, grumpy and more than just a little cynical. One day, I found myself in possession of a NES, and a copy of Super Mario Bros 3. It was that game that made me realise that games were more than just toys to idly while away time - they were capable of being masterpieces. I'm here now, looking for more of those masterpieces.
