2K officially pins WWE licence

As was rumoured during the great THQ asset auction, it looks like 2K sports will indeed be taking the reins on the WWE video game licence. Those hoping for a more serious simulation experience as with 2K’s other sports games might want to dial your excitement though.

There are all sorts of boring legal implications with the deal; money changing hands, contracts being bought out and the like, but the most interesting bit of news is that it seems like 2K won;t be doing development; that duty will still be done, unfortunately, by stalwart developer Yukes.

"We can confirm that we have entered into an agreement to publish the WWE video game series that is developed by Yukes.” Take-Two said in a statement to Polygon. “At this time, the agreement is pending court approval and we anticipate that it will be finalized shortly. We are very excited about the potential of this agreement and will have more to share at the appropriate time."

If there’s one thing that WWE games sorely need is a new developer; Japanese developer Yukes has been handling the duty for over a decade now and it shows – mostly because they’re still largely using the same engine they have since they began.

There’s nothing like a good wrestling game, but the last 7 or so iterations of the WWE titles have been Nothing like good wrestling games.

Someone needs to make a game like Def Jam: Fight for New York.

Agreed! Def Jam: FIght for New York and Def Jam Vendetta still get plays from me (PS2 is always hooked up to my old TV). And here’s the funny thing, I have a love/hate relationship with rap and hip hop… But DAMN, those games were solid fighters.

Maybe with a new publisher, Yukes can be prodded into a better direction for the game. I would love a proper “career” or “rpg” element in the game where you start from scratch as a total rookie and need to work your way up to the “big times”. I think 2008 had the “superstar” mode where you had to train your skills between matches. Make the game Awesome please!

I want a Mexican wrestling game, Nacho Libre style. They can make it as cheesy as possible, and it will be awesome.

As Foxy already mentioned, there is one out already it’s called Lucha Libre AAA: Héroes del Ring.

I imported a copy of it (last year)… and It’s not bad for a wrestling game. But, it’s definitely a niche title, much like the TNA Impact game. Both games share the same issues with move recycling, inconsistent AI and non-responsive controls, but if you’re into AAA or related lucha Libre then I’ll recommend it with the usual warning of “don’t expect much”.

Personally though, it’s cool to see La Parka (if you’re a wrestling fan, and you watched a lot of WCW on eTV a couple years ago, you’ll probably remember him), Psicosis and others in a game…

Now if only I can import copies of All Star Pro Wrestling….

Oh and Fire Pro Wrestling… I really wish I could import those games (at reasonable prices). I used to own the PS2 version, but I made the mistake of letting a friend “borrow” it for the weekend. The version they have on XBLA is… shit… no it’s beyond shit.

WWE All Stars was fantastic, though. Breath of fresh air, I’d say.

Oddly, I was given a copy of All Stars and initially I thought “what the heck is this” but the arcade wrestling actually grew on me. The over the top moves and craziness of it made it a pretty decent fighting game. Just a pity as a total package there wasn’t much on the disk.
