Work Avoidance Wednesday: Prince of Persia

PoP

I just want to take a moment to tell Geoff how much I hate him. Ever since he discovered this MS-DOS game emulating site, my productivity levels have dipped horrendously. I’ll remember a game from my younger days, load it up with the intention of spending a couple of minutes reminiscing, only to lose an entire morning or afternoon in the blink of an eye. How is anybody meant to get any work done around here?

Today, Prince of Persia popped into my head. No, not the Sands of Time series we played in the early years of this millennium, but the very original which came out in, wait for it, in 1989. And now you and I both feel rather ancient.

HAHA DIE YOU FOOL

It was the first platformer I ever played. I only ever got to play it when I visited some cousins who were kind enough to let a kid like me mess around on their PC.

EXIT OMG

The premise was simple enough. An evil dude called Jaffar (picture him as the baddie from Aladdin if you must) has captured the Sultan’s daughter and locked her up in a tower. It’s up to you, random er… prison guy, to save her.

All I wanted was the potion dammit

The catch is that there is plethora of traps and enemies standing between you and her. Oh, and you only have 60 minutes to ascend the dungeons. Dying does not reset that timer, it will tick down constantly. Did I mention that you have a weird shadow/mirror image of yourself that pops up now and then to slow you down too? Yeah, this game had its own flavour of difficulty, but man it was awesome!

Casual sword fighting

The button scheme is simple enough; the arrow keys, yes, not WASD for a change, provide movement. Up serves as the jump key, and combining it with left or right results in a running jump. It also serves as a parry button when the sword is equipped. The only other key required is shift. It serves as the action key; it will let you walk (so as not to fall of an edge), stab an enemy if you have a drawn sword, or drink a potion when health is nice and low.

lolol pwned

I’m sure many of you have played this game, and will have a soft spot for it such as I do. If I didn’t, I think I may have rage quit after dying for the umpteenth time. If you’re new to the game, well, expect to die many, many times. Passing a level does carry a certain sense of achievement though, so don’t give up so easily!

OMG RUNNING OUTTA TIME

Without further ado, here is Prince of Persia, the original, playable right in your browser. Feel free to unleash your anger in the comments below!
