Zelda’s motion controls aren’t going away

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword features some of the best motion controls in a game – marrying traditional and motion controls beautifully. Sure, the left-handed link has magically switched his dominant arm to cater for the waggling masses, but its resulted in what’s arguably the best Zelda yet. Nintendo hopes fans like those motion controls – because they’re not going anywhere.

At one point, Legend of Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma considered scrapping the MotionPlus support for Skyward sword, returning to standard button controls – but now concedes there’s no going back.

"I honestly think we cannot go back to button controls now, so I think that these controls will be used in future Zelda titles, too," he said to Official Nintendo Magazine.

I wonder how that’s going to work with the next big Zelda, on Nintendo’s new Wii U. The demo I fiddled around with at E3 pretty much blew my mind – but the Wii U’s tablet (despite having a giant touch screen in the middle of it) is closer to a traditional, twin-sticked controller, and not exactly conducive to sword-swinging swashbuckling.

Personally? I prefer buttons – but I think the Wii U’s tablet could add some amazing elements to Zelda gameplay.
