My mom did the same thing, and if I didn’t do any chores, homework or even ventured outside, I would lose gaming hours. In hindsight it was a pretty ingenious system. One, I’ll probably emulate when I have my own snotty-nosed ginger-haired mini-capitalists.

When I was a kid, my mom let me play my Sega Mega Drive for an hour after school. I would always do it immediately after I came home. And you know what? That hour relaxed me and de-stressed me after being in school for seven hours. After my gaming hour I would eat, do my homework and then when my dad came home we would eat and watch some TV. So I agree with the points raised that everything should be done in moderation. I was disciplined and knew that after the hour was over I had to turn off the Mega Drive – i did’t need any reminders, ebcause I knew there was homework that needed to be done. So the woman who wrote the article should focus on eteching her kids discipline and balance in life and not blaming her poor parenting skills on video games

Now that I will agree with, my kids love nothing more than a day at the science museum.. but if I took them every day they would absolutely hate the place in a week and start breaking things

I agree 100%. I got a 1 month old daughter, I’ve started paying attention to these types of issues. Young people need some culture.

Oops, I just saw many typos in my previous post. basically what i am saying is that exposing your kids to technology is not a bad thing, creating better technology is what being human is all about. There must be a balance that is why i am saying that parents should expose their kids to a wide a variety as things as much as possible. Museums might be education but is also fun for children or take them to the park or the beach. If they know there are things beyond the ps3, wii, 360 it may help with self discipline. So parents stop passing the buck your children will always try to exploit your generosity. I sure as hell tried but somehow always failed because if i wanted something i had to work for it .

that is a 100% correct. yet my parents said when they were growing up, it was less information cluttered than what i went through. my grand parents said the same thing about my parents, and so on.
every generation has something new to occupy their recreational time. your grandchildren will be so embroiled in technology that it will make what we have now look like the dark ages.

the one thing that remains throughout each and every generation, is parenting style. good parenting will overcome any problems that normally arise. blaming games, movies or even technology is misguided and ‘scape goating’.

dysfunctional parenting breeds dysfunctional people.
