Videogames were invented by the devil Getting There

Corruption

A mom in Orange County has suddenly become an online gaming celebrity after posting an entirely serious article trying to explain why she feels that videogames were invented by the devil.

Some of the classic nuggets from the article are she always dreamed off all the neighbourhood kids crowding around her kitchen demanding she feeds them.

Her friends kid is only allowed to play the DS in the car so he sits in the car all day playing games.

A sewing machine for herself is a greater priority than getting what the kids had asked for for Christmas.

She see’s nothing wrong with the parenting of the woman who phoned 911 because her son wouldn’t go to bed.

If Sir Isaac Newton had a DS he would never have understood gravity.

Really this article just gets better and better, you just have to go give it a read.

PS: I just checked her Twitter account and her son is now apparently locked up in his room because she won’t give him money to go out and play outside. The irony is not lost on me.

I actually think she makes some pretty good points. As much as we love games, we are kidding our selves saying we don’t think they are bad for kids.

The problem is that they become addictive and compulsive, leading kids to become fixated on them often to the detriment of other activities which really can have a possitive impact on a developing mind.

I am glad I didnt have access to games when I was seven. I spent my childhood developing my imagination, playing GI Joes in the garden, riding around my neighborhood with my dogs etc. If I had had a 360 I would not have needed to do these things. I would probably have spent a lot more time inside, and I would not have as many awesome childhood memories as I do.

I also don’t think I would be the person I am today. Even now I make sure to mix in other activities with my beloved gaming time. Going on hikes, surfing, reading, mountain biking, fly fishing etc.

    • easy

there is absolutely nothing wrong with gaming, as long as it is done in moderation.
that applies to everything in life, including surfing and other such outdoor hobbies.

      • Watson

Unfortunatly kids do not understand the concept of “moderation”.

Furthermore, ask any parent how difficult it is to monitor their kids activities all the time. And they shouldn’t have to either. Games are just far more compelling than most other activities.

Kids will therefore prefer playing games to other daily activities and in many cases will go to extremes to play. I remember in my early teenage years sneaking down to the family PC at after everyone went to bed to play a few hours of Quake or Red Alert.

And finally, even if you do control your kid’s time, they will still be wanting to play. I don’t think its healthy to continually deprive kids of their desires.

I guess I just feel that kids should not play any games in their formulative years. From 15 onwards fine. But I don’t see any good coming from games before then.

  • Killer

If youre going to sissy your kids from an early age and give them everything that they want they are going to hold you for randsom. This all comes down to parenting and the quality thereof. The key is to strike balance between gaming and other activities. If you allow your kids to play digital games all day it’s your fault if you wake up one day and realize that they are spending too much time infront of the devices. I agree on some points and i disagree on others that she’s made but it’s her decision ultimately. I would not deprive my kids of playing digital games but i would manage the time spent doing so. :ninja:

    GAMING is NOT for KIDS!

People are allowing TV’s and Games to raise their spawn, coz they cannot be arsed to change their lives to suit a family unit with a child.

Wanna breed? Then one of you needs to stop working and raise your kid.

Not possible? Then do not bloody breed.

Does that mean I should go and stop my kids playing Mario Bros while I do some work :pouty:

Gaming in moderation helps to grow imagination and social interaction… excessive gaming destroys both

If Sir Isaac Newton had a DS he might not have understood gravity, but games would sure seriously advanced now! :D

    Gravity is overrated.

  • Bonk

I am not a parent myself and hope not be one for a long time. I am 30 now and there is a huge difference between the technology that kids are being exposed to now then to when i was growing up. Life is alot faster, and kids grow up quicker, and there expectations are different to what anybody else on this site probably expected when we all grew up.

Most of us (i hope) were exposed books, theater, palying outside ect from an early age which stimulated brain development; that was due to good parenting. However, in todays fast paced world of high tech gadgets, big cars, people need to work considerably harder to maintain a certain level of lifestyle and to provide their children with the best possible start in life. Unfortunately, with both parents having to work it is easy for kids to fall back onto technology.

Unless your kid is an angel, kids are generally taxing and will hold you to ransom and it was no different back when i was a teen. Parents should set clear boundaries for their children, and as much as we would like to blame Satan for everything that goes bump in the night, parents should take responsibilty for their lack of judgment.

    • easy

that is a 100% correct. yet my parents said when they were growing up, it was less information cluttered than what i went through. my grand parents said the same thing about my parents, and so on.
every generation has something new to occupy their recreational time. your grandchildren will be so embroiled in technology that it will make what we have now look like the dark ages.

the one thing that remains throughout each and every generation, is parenting style. good parenting will overcome any problems that normally arise. blaming games, movies or even technology is misguided and ‘scape goating’.

      dysfunctional parenting breeds dysfunctional people.

    • SlippyMadFrog

I must admit, I wasn’t exposed to theater. TV is my theater :ninja:

      • Bonk

Oops, I just saw many typos in my previous post. basically what i am saying is that exposing your kids to technology is not a bad thing, creating better technology is what being human is all about. There must be a balance that is why i am saying that parents should expose their kids to a wide a variety as things as much as possible. Museums might be education but is also fun for children or take them to the park or the beach. If they know there are things beyond the ps3, wii, 360 it may help with self discipline. So parents stop passing the buck your children will always try to exploit your generosity. I sure as hell tried but somehow always failed because if i wanted something i had to work for it .

        • SlippyMadFrog

I agree 100%. I got a 1 month old daughter, I’ve started paying attention to these types of issues. Young people need some culture.

Now that I will agree with, my kids love nothing more than a day at the science museum.. but if I took them every day they would absolutely hate the place in a week and start breaking things

  • Yarik11

When I was a kid, my mom let me play my Sega Mega Drive for an hour after school. I would always do it immediately after I came home. And you know what? That hour relaxed me and de-stressed me after being in school for seven hours. After my gaming hour I would eat, do my homework and then when my dad came home we would eat and watch some TV. So I agree with the points raised that everything should be done in moderation. I was disciplined and knew that after the hour was over I had to turn off the Mega Drive – i did’t need any reminders, ebcause I knew there was homework that needed to be done. So the woman who wrote the article should focus on eteching her kids discipline and balance in life and not blaming her poor parenting skills on video games

    • Bobby Kotick bodyslams ball tampering Andrew Straus through a table

My mom did the same thing, and if I didn’t do any chores, homework or even ventured outside, I would lose gaming hours. In hindsight it was a pretty ingenious system. One, I’ll probably emulate when I have my own snotty-nosed ginger-haired mini-capitalists.
