Will Sunset Overdrive be too repetitive?

Sunset Overdrive was definitely a personal highlight of mine at rAge this weekend. Finally getting some hands on time with my most anticipated Xbox One title definitely got me pumped for the launch this month, but it also made me a little cautious about how the game will hold up after a few hours; worries which aren’t exactly helped by a good chunk of gameplay footage.

Most of the time all of the Sunset Overdrive gameplay seems to be similar, if not the same, footage. At least today it’s a little different, with a lengthy video showcasing some of the other missions you’ll be undertaking in Sunset City. Missions which have you taking out waves of enemies to drive up a score bar. Or a pretty intense train chase that has you hoping around just to keep up.

It all looks very interesting, but just the same as everything else. The rAge demo featured gameplay that was scarily similar, instructing me to take down two roller coaster carts while grinding an entire theme park to hell and back. Again, it was fun, but if the missions structure rarely deviates from this then I can’t help but worry about what will keep me hooked throughout the campaign.

Thankfully, multiplayer seems to benefit from the “more is always better” mantra of design. Sunset Overdrive looks absolutely insane with a few extra players in the mix, exploding into a showcase of colour and mayhem. I’m struggling to keep track of everything that’s going on, but it doesn’t really matter. It looks like a hell of a lot of fun, and a lot better than most of the single-player stuff I’ve seen.

Good news is that we won’t have to wait long to find out just how awesome, or disappointing, Sunset Overdrive is. The game launches exclusively for Xbox One on October 31st.

  1. 900p, 30fps for a Bone exclusive.
Looks like Ubisoft was right. These next gen machines with their crazy 8gigs of RAM are just for running multiple social operating systems in the background while 200mb is used for running last gen games with more particle effects.

The jump from the 6th gen to the 7th gen with its gazzzzzzzzilion POLYGONS and almost perfectly round circles and texture mapping like in Gears of War MADE ME GIGGLE IN NEXT GEN GLEE.

I don’t know why this game is getting so much press. It looks so boring to me. Why is Microsoft pushing this game so hard. To sell consoles Microsoft needs a single player shooting game with a fucking good story and not a sequel. But Microsoft is trying hard to fail. I want them to fail because of those DRM plans.

Because it’s an XBOX exclusive, they are pushing to make this a console seller.

Hmmm I bought Forza 5 – and I must say I like it a lot. It is very much Forza 3/4 with better graphics, but it is compelling nonetheless. I am not disappointed in it at all either. It is WAY better than the original reviews made me believe.

Forza 5? Dude, then you should try Horizons 2.

My copy of 5 is still sealed, and I’m not the least bit tempted to open it.

Best thing about it is that it still feels and plays like Forza. The haptic feedback from the triggers is also pretty sweet but I do think the novelty will wear off until they get stronger feedback going.

I don’t see this game as a console seller. The word exclusive won’t sell consoles. Microsoft needs to learn that.

From the cars and choppers, you know? With the parachute, you know? K, I’m bored with this game and I haven’t played it yet, moving on.

I got a ONE couple weeks back – I do like it. I tried so hard to resist and then just gave in… This game does look fun and from what I have heard of people playing it, seems a lot more going on BUT I can see the concern over repetitiveness…but then isn’t that the case with most shooters anyway? Doesn’t stop us.

And I assume you meaning Just Cause in your references?

Why hasn’t Square made a sequel to Just Cause yet? It would be about time considering the last one was an early launch title.

            October 13, 2014 at 11:48

Actually 1st Just Cause was an early launch title for Xbox 360 (never appeared on PS3 but did on PS2). I have yet to play a Just Cause – open world games are not my main thing although when I do play them I do enjoy them…odd I know.

I suppose Avalanche (if I recall developers) are too busy with Mad Max to make sequel right now.

Look at what Uncharted and The Last of Us, did for PS3 sales. The Last of Us is so good that it’s even a reason to buy a PS4.

Good single player shooting games that tells a good story and that’s new will sell consoles. And not always online single player games and multiplayer games.
Destiny sold consoles but because people thought they were getting a good Bungie story.

Did you really expect more of this game? It was done in a rush. It is R&C Railgrinding done for an entire game. What did you expect? They’ve been advertising this since Day 1. I tried to tell people it was going to get old fast, but you wouldn’t listen. Instead, you were all excited without thinking it through.

Next time try using your brain and some critical thinking skills. A game where they advertise one of the weakest parts of R&C as its strongest parts, a game where Sony passed…

There was a reason. Now you know it. Railgrinding is NOT the reason I play R&C, so it’s not a reason to play Sunset Overdrive. Insomniac is just not as great as they once were.

I guess to each their own. Most previews I’ve seen have been glowing…Gamespot or IGN or some other site had a preview up and said 2 hours went by in a flash, that it’s crazy fun and didn’t get boring. Guess we’ll see soon.
