Quake

Games today, for the most part, are guided entertainment experiences. Perhaps because they attained such mass market appeal, games have become considerably easier over the years – mostly through all sorts of digital hand-holding. Games tell you what to do, where to go and  how to play or exist as corridors, giving the pretence of freedom.

Here’s a fan’s look at what seminal shooter Quake might’ve been like if it had been made today. It’s a lovely bit of nostalgia, and It makes some good points; are games these days too easy, too forgiving? Maybe – but they’ve also progressed in terms of story-telling, characterisation and sophistication and really, I wouldn’t want things to go back.
