Valve announces winners of the Saxxy Awards 2014

Saxxy

Valve kicked off the very first edition of the Saxxy Awards a few years ago. What is it exactly? Well, fans are encouraged to make their very own machinima utilising the Source Filmmaker – the same (and free) tool that Valve use to make animated videos for several of their games. Fans then enter their animation into one of 4 categories; short, action, comedy, drama. Oscars be damned, here are your winners for the Saxxy Awards 2014!

You can view all the nominees in their specific categories right here on the official page. If you don’t have the time to watch through the content, I’d recommend bookmarking and doing so when you can. Here are the winners from each category:

Best Short

TF2 in 60 seconds

Best Action

Rivalry Rush

Best Comedy

About a Scout

Best Drama

Best Overall

Animation vs. Animator

The only real limitations imposed on entrants is that their films could not be longer than 5 minutes. Entries into the short category on the other hand, could be no longer than 1 minute.

What prizes do these animators get for their hard work? A Saxxy award for Team Fortress 2 of course! I’m sure you’ll laugh, but it really shouldn’t be about money or anything anyways. Besides, judging by the price of some items in Valve games, I’d imagine the winners could sell their award on the market for quite the amount if they wanted.

The overall winner gets something way better though. They are flown to Seattle for a tour of Valve and they get to meet Valve’s filmmakers. I would totally use that opportunity infiltrate Valve HQ and get the inside scoop on… wait a second…

Number of Saxxy award winners = 5
Game used in all winners = Team Fortress 2
5 – 2 = 3!

WE ALL KNOW WHAT THIS MEANS!

Moving on, do you have any favourites from any of the categories this year? I quite enjoyed this one which fleshed out the story of the ever scary Pudge from Dota 2.

  1. They’re making either TF3, L4D3 or DOTA3? …Wait, 3 three-sequels? That’s 3 cubed. OMG HL3!

l4d3 was actually confirmed, sort of.
at the international 3, the dota players got a tour of the office and they noticed the source code on one of the devs monitors.

that there has been no further news on it, means that its probably a pet project

They should do what Windows did, skip a number. Release HL4.

I tried to vote for the Pudge one this morning but I was told I needed to purchase a game to be eligible… I own 155 games (and I’ve even finished some of them).
Now I think it was meant to say that the vote period had passed and gave me the wrong error message.
