Unreal Engine 4 is a particle effect monster

Unreal Engine 4 is available to developers right now and thanks to an intriguing new licencing system, is actually within the grasp of just about every type of game developer. Expect very many indie games utilising that engine in the near future. One of those games, Nelo, is coming along quite nicely, showing some of the engine’s particle effects systems at work. LOOK AT ALL THOSE PARTICLES!

Here’s what it’s about, according to Indiedb.

In Distant Space, An alien species, the Tono Gian, have been fighting their own A.I. creations to find resourceful planets. The A.I. project, Nightsithe, was originally designed to harvest other planets for their people but now have revolted against their masters. A Tono Gian ship crashed on the planet, Plemniba, a planet that once had a civilization, but has already taken by the Nightsithe. The only survivor of the ship goes by the name, Nelo. Nelo Hybrids Elements of retro arcade twin-stick shooters with elements of modern games. Nelo Main Weapon are four telekinetic controlled, mechanical Hand that allow Him to wield four conventional weapons at once and gives him the flexibility to fire in all direction. Nelo’s alien suit gives him super speed and agility to combat the overwhelming swarms of the Nightsithe.

Interestingly, developer Magic & Mirrors only switched to Unreal Engine 4 from UDK – the free edition of Unreal Engine 3 -  a month ago.

That is…a  lot of particle effects. Game seems bit like MDK and Geometry Wars had a baby – so it may be one to keep an eye on.

Man, I would love to see a new version of System Shock 2, if built like Deus Ex: Human Revolution… as flawed as it was, it felt mechanically like Deus Ex, which was Basically System Shock 2….

I agree on part of your comment, on the idea yes, on the “flawed” DX:HR….ummmm….not so sure. Look, it wasn’t perfect, but far from flawed IMHO

            April 22, 2014 at 15:56

Well, flawed in a few ways, the boss battles felt forced, and the ending felt like a bit of a cop out…. The energy bars and Jars were a bit sparse and expensive to my liking (I used A LOT of abilities that required energy) (but that’s just my opninion)…. I Still loved the experience… Stealthing made me feel like a Cyborg ninja! 😀

Ok, the boss fights and ending(s) apart, it was a damn epic game.

I will make it easy. MDK would probably come to console first being a third person shooter for the most part while Syndicate Wars being and RTS would stick to PC. So Syndicate in your case.

Of course yes! It goes beyond RTS games though : After I got used to mouse freelook while driving in GTA 3 and GTAIV I simply don’t want to play it any other way 😛 which currently of course is at my detriment (biggest casualty : RDR sniff…)

I would’ve been perpetually pissed off at the notion of Syndicate as an FPS, but I’m not. The reason being, a saviour came along : XCOM Enemy Unkown which showed the world that if you want to a successful reboot, stick to the guns of what made the game great.

I swear we had it better growing up than what we have at the moment with all the DRM and DLC crap. Plus all the original titles that was available. Maybe I’m just overly nostalgic.

Nah, I enjoy my older games but I’m not so nostalgic – still get damn good games being released now. I’m loving the new XCOM & it’s very different to the originals, which I also enjoyed. It’s just the “added extras” that cause the problems.

The fact that the devs only switched over to UE4 a month ago, speaks to how easily UE3 work can be imported into the new Engine. I’m guessing UE4 is a very versatile, user friendly engine….

Particles seems to be something the PS4 handles with ease. Resogun is a nice tech demo of this but games like Killzone and Infamous really goes nuts with the particle count.

What’s a resourceful planet? Also, where did Nelo, the alien, get an alien suit from – hopefully they explain that. I love poorly written official descriptions. And no, I don’t care that it’s indie.
