Carnegie Mellon University is a strange place. Like Rhodes in SA is best known for journalism, CMU also has a claim to fame. Well, two, actually – Robotics and Musical Theater. That’s right, you’ll often see people rehearsing for their new play on one of the open lawns while robots attempt to move around them. You can’t make this up – I’ve seen it with my own eyes.
If that hasn’t warped your perspective, this video certainly will. It’s still just a tech demo, but check out that first person puzzler! For those who don’t watch videos, they have made use of perspective to make objects bigger and smaller to form a puzzle game. It’s sort of like a game version of those bad holiday pictures that show someone holding up the Tower of Pisa or the way Darryn uses that low close-up angle when sending Geoff inappropriate pictures of his nether region.
I really like the idea of this technology – it’s fresh and innovative and could be used for a bunch of cool things. It almost reminds me of how Portal reshaped how we see the world – this could certainly bring a bunch of new ideas into games. I’d love to see it combined with the Oculus Rift. Well, I probably shouldn’t see that sort of thing considering I’m still working on overcoming my FPS-induced nausea. I’m following Geoff’s prescription of playing an FPS every day until it no longer makes me feel sick – hopefully one day that means I can play an awesome perspective-based puzzle game without taking anti-nausea pills.

So in summary what looks smaller far away is actually a lot bigger up close. Dunno about any of you but my self esteem just got a boost.

But if it seems small to you I’ve got news for you. That means it’s small up close. Therefore to anyone else slightly further away it would seem even smaller…
We are talking about the size of your pizza you ordered right?

Well that depends on your height and the height of the table you’re putting the err… “pizza” on. The fact that I’m average height makes me a sad panda now 🙁
