Trailer

There are way, way too many trailers, demos and next-gen engines from Sony’s PlayStation 4 event – so we though instead of littering the front page we’ll stick them all in one easy to follow post.

Knack

Sony, surprisingly, kicked off its PS4 games showcase with something that wasn;t hyper-realistic – but instead a cutsey 3D platformer that seems to have a ton of charm, and reminds me oddly enough of Xbox 360 launch title Kameo – just far, far better.

Killzone: Shadow Fall

We’ve already shown this one via a full post – so there’s not much more that needs to be said. It looks pretty, but Killzone’s always been a little too generic for me. Hopefully this one changes that.

inFamous: Second Son

I’ve only recently finished inFamous 2 (thanks to PlayStation Plus) and I have to admit that I enjoyed it far more than I expected to. It may have been a tad repetitive, but the stellar voice acting from just about every main character sucked me right in. Here’s the trailer for the next game in the series, which seems to lack Cole and tackle an Orwellian future. the new protagonist reminds me a little of DmC’s emo Dante.

The  Witness

Braid developer Jonathan Blow showed off his poncy new game, The Witness – which seems odd, colourful, and reminiscent of Myst.

DriveClub

There’s little information about this racer from Evolution studios, other than that it’s a socially-connected and looks pretty incredible.

Deep Down

Capcom showed off its new IP and new Panta Rhei Engine with Deep down, a game that looks like a next generation blend of Dark Souls and Dragon’s Dogma.

Destiny

We’ve said as much about Destiny as we can – but it’ll also be coming to the PlayStation 4.

Unreal Engine 4

Epic Games is ecstatic about the new PlayStation 4 – mostly because it runs their new engine.

“We are thrilled to build onto our long-established success with PlayStation,” Says epic’s Tim Sweeny.  “Unreal Engine 4 is expertly designed for the next generation of game development and the outstanding power of PlayStation 4. Today’s demonstration offers a preview of what developers can accomplish using our tools to create games for PlayStation 4.”

Quantic Dreams’ “Old Man”

As I predicted, David Cage would harp on about how the PlayStation 4 would enable games to have more emotion. Here’s that happening, along with an impressive, but  creepy as all hell tech demo.

I'm old, grumpy and more than just a little cynical. One day, I found myself in possession of a NES, and a copy of Super Mario Bros 3. It was that game that made me realise that games were more than just toys to idly while away time - they were capable of being masterpieces.I'm here now, looking for more of those masterpieces.I am also the emperor of the backend

  • JayDiCee

I LURVED the demos and trailers but I still can’t believe we were uber trolled by Square Enix like that!!!

But Sony are welcome to take my money this festive season

    • Banana Jim

PS4 savings fund is fat enough for a few games now. I can’t wait. I’ll save up a bit more for even more games so come November, Jimmy Banana will be smiling from ear to ear.

      • JayDiCee

You don’t perhaps know of someone in need of a slightly used possibly intoxicated kidney just incase the missus finds out about my PS4 christmas fund ey?

        • Banana Jim

I may be living on the couch now but I stood my ground… cough… :P

          • Banana Jim

But seriously though, I told the missus what my intentions were, and then I sugar coated it by splitting the fund as a December gift fund. So half goes to her, half goes to me. We both pitch in and we both get what we want come Hanukkah/Summer Solstice/Christmas.

          • JayDiCee

lol just remembered Walter from Jeff Dunham now… :-) Screw you it’s merry Christmas! Classic.

          • Banana Jim

            Hahaha Jeff Dunham is awesome.

          • JayDiCee

Luckilly you’re on the couch for me it would be the Kennel because she found out I was camping out on the couch with my ps3 whenever I got sent to there.

  • JayDiCee

glad they named the controller dualshock 4 and not something like dualshock MOOVITA

    • Admiral Chief Erwin

      MOOVITA?

      rofl

      • JayDiCee

Yeah lol especially with all the stuff about the number 4 being bad luck and all that, you know what I mean. O worse yet the Orbis Dualshock MOOVITA MOTION controling Device

        • Banana Jim

Yeah, was listening to this podcast two nights ago, and they were going on about whether the PS4 will be known as PS4 or PSFour in Japan. Spelling out the word as “four” gives you different kanjis and thus you don’t get the kanji that sounds like death.

          • JayDiCee

Strange really as most of the animé I’ve watched deal with the supersticious and death istelf would that not be more ominous than the 4 itself?

          • Banana Jim

I can’t say since I’m not Japanese but I doubt it’s that much different to our superstitions down here on the penis tip of Africa.

Some of it is pretty far out there, like walking between the legs of a ladder or the number 13, or black cats, or cats (in general – never understood that one). Or if you’re African, the power the ancestors have over you. Now you can feature the ancestors in a TV show, like say Sewende Laan or Muvango, but I guess afterwards depending on the level of superstitious beliefs the production crew will probably try to appease the ancestors. “We were only making a tv series, Baba… now go back to rest”. I remember helping out on a set a couple years ago (during my teens) and the particular show features some story involving a satanic coven, and yep… the production crew prayed before and afterwards. I just watched it all with great interest.

        • Admiral Chief Erwin

I saw your original spelling mistake, nice save :P

So will this be the ODMMCD?

          • JayDiCee

LoL in this case I was SAVED by auto correct and quickly changed my ways hoping no one would notice

          • Admiral Chief Erwin

            *quickly
            (saw that one as well)
            :P

          • JayDiCee

lack of sleep and coffee to blame this time… I watched the whOle unveiling and like a boy before christmas could not sleep after that

          • Banana Jim

Same here bru, I’m so fucked and spaced out at the moment. Tried to sleep after the meet but was so wired. Played a bit of PS3, and then lay in bed for a while. Eventually ended up watching Cops and the Simpsons.

Of course called in sick… hehehe, but it’s cool, today was a throw-away day anyways.

  • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

The witness huh? Ok, you have my attention

  • Deon Steyn

Verily the PS4 might actually sell more than the PS2 depending on what the next XBOX brings. I wonder how the folk over Nintendo feels about all this regarding the WIIU

  • manowaffles

Am I the only one who saw Knack and thought, it’s like Wonderful 101 but with a robot and a bunch of pieces rather than a team of super heroes?

  • Banana Jim

lol, kotaku is up to their old tricks again. What a worthless site that is. They really make gamers and the gaming media look like a bunch of whining pussies.

    • JayDiCee

The forgot to activate their pussy filter man

    • asd

      Lol the Irony

  • http://www.facebook.com/nathanhorne1 Nathan Horne

    Deep Down!

    • Banana Jim

Dude… that cave section… If that is all in-game.. I’m literally going to cry tears of joy.

      • http://www.facebook.com/nathanhorne1 Nathan Horne

They did show a weapon icon in the bottom corner. Maybe they just did that to make us all jizz ourselves, but hopefully it is all in-game…

        • Banana Jim

I certainly had to change my underpants…

      • http://twitter.com/Goodstuph1980 Gustav Minnie

That cave section is 2005 E3 Killzone 2 trailer all over again. ;)

  • GTO

JHonestly I don’t see what people are getting hyped about. This is about inkline with expectations, certainly not exceeding them.

    • Banana Jim

Depends on whether your expectations are reasonable or whether you went full-retard. :P

What I have noticed and this is just speaking to fellow gamers is that some folks have these insane expectations about graphics being almost life-like, to really bizarre ideas about what games should be going into the next generation. It’s good to dream, but you really need to be realistic. I thought the reveal was exceptional. They touched on most of the aspects that I was hoping for an d they’re still keeping some cards to their chest for E3 and PAX. I wasn’t expecting a total reveal of features nor the unveiling of the console.

      • Deon Steyn

They did showed a lot of new stuff though to be hyped about. I want to see how the new controller works with the touch pad and the camera on the console,I want to see the cloud service in action and I love how you can put the console in sleep mode and resume where you left. Coupled with PS+ service how is this not reason enough to get a PS4.

        • Banana Jim

Tell you what, I want November to come quick, and I definitely hope that our distributors are on the ball. I hope that we’ll get this console roughly the same time as the rest of the world… BECAUSE MY BODY IS READY!!!

      • JayDiCee

AMEN!!! Am I the only one who hoped for a complete RE1 and 2 (maybe 3) revamp after seeing the new Capcom engine at work?

        • Banana Jim

I was hoping for Onimusha… I really was. When they spoke about Onimusha, I almost had a moment, and then it past. I really loved that game, even the last one with Jean Reno.

          • mornelithe

Swear to god, if Ono talked about Onimusha only to discuss the past….Ima be pissed. I want a new Onimusha, give it to me, right effin now.

      • GTO

Yeah thats why this is in line with expectations… because it is about what could be expected.

  • http://twitter.com/Technikyle TechniKyle

That tech demo is creepy, awesome, but creepy. I still wonder why people want games to be a realistic looking as possible. What do we do when we reach absolute realism? Nothing wrong with a little bit of animation.

    • Banana Jim

The creepiest bit is when you see the emotion in its eyes, the way the eyeball tears up, and the brow-ridge changes so very subtly… amazing stuff. I don’t know how they did it, but they leaped the uncanny valley. Although, we’ll have to see how it all pans out in a game.

      • mornelithe

I heard an interview recently on NPR (National Public Radio) in the States, where a security expert was discussing a system he’d designed that trained officers and other security personnel to identify emotions from a fraction of a glimpse at someone’s face. He designed software that employs all the muscles in the face, and has the ‘emotions’ pre-built in. The purpose of this, isn’t to be able to look at someone who’s visibly pissed and say, Yeah, he’s pissed.

It’s to give them brief flashes of a emotion, as if someone had dropped their guard for only the briefest of moments. It’s designed to assist law enforcement to notice the smallest of changes. My thought is that if Quantic Dream were to employ software or techniques like this, they could make in-game characters much much more personal, and human.

And for devs like Quantic Dream, that kind of technology/research is exactly their bread and butter, baysplosions aren’t their M.O., they go for feeling and emotion, and an engine that mimics the 43 muscles of the human face is right up their alley.

Can’t wait to see it in action.

        • http://twitter.com/Technikyle TechniKyle

          Tell that to anime.

          • mornelithe

What does anime have to do with it? Anime doesn’t have enough detail to actually bring out the distinct facial movements that we’re talking about. Most game engines lack this level of detail, which is why many devs (like Quantic) have gone to such extreme lengths to try and accomplish this.

You could cut out immeasurable amounts of dialogue if we could all recognize the emotions going on inside the character, just from looking at their faces.

          • http://twitter.com/Technikyle TechniKyle

Jeez dude, it was a joke, chill a little…

          • mornelithe

            Who’s not chill? o.O

I asked what anime had to do with it. I didn’t jump hip deep in your shit, maybe you knew of some anime I didn’t lol.

          • http://twitter.com/Technikyle TechniKyle

How do I explain this… anime tends to exaggerate emotion. It’s never really subtle.

          • mornelithe

Oh, I get your meaning there. But, I think there’s a big difference between anime emotion, and actually being able to determine the emotion of an NPC, just by watching the subtle changes in facial expression.

I think it could be quite interesting having an engine that works in this way, because rather than the developer having to go overboard trying to emphasize how the NPC feels, they can have distinct muscular movements in the face to reflect flashes of extreme emotions.

  • FoxOneZA

DriveClub is a shameless rip off Forza! There I said it :D

I wonder how PD feels with in-house competition ;)

    • Banana Jim

Forza is a shameless rip off of Gran Turismo, much in the same way that War Z is a shameless ripoff of Day Z. There I said it :D

      • JayDiCee

And XBOX only exists because it could not let our precious be the monopolous console god that it was back then… more ripping off it seems

        • Banana Jim

And Xbox avatars are shameless rip-offs of Wii Miis… and Facebook is a shameless ripoff of that other college social media thing… and Microsoft ripped off Apple, and Apple ripped off Xerox, and the Japanese ripped off the Americans and the Chinese ripped off the West, and the South Africans ripped off the Israelis, and the Israelis stole secrets from the Americans (lol hilarious story there), and before we knew it Humpty Dumpty was leaking out of his shell, and the King’s men had bacon and eggs for breakfast.

Tis the tale of Human history… pillaging and raping. :( I’m pretty sure when the first human ancestor climbed out of the tree, he stole something while descending.

          The Banana has spoken.

          • FoxOneZA

And a banana is a shameless ripoff off …

          • Banana Jim

Pfft bananas are phallic AND contain copious amounts of potassium, phosporus (like a boss) and a little bit of selenium… what do foxies have? Mmmm Mmmm…

          • FoxOneZA

Fur bro. Keep’s us warm and cool. Can survive the harhest of climates. And we don’t have a tendency to get chowed down :P

    • MieLLiePaP

I dont see it as Forza or as Gran Turismo, sofar it looks more like Driveclub is like PGR, but now you can climb in your own car

    • Banana Jim

Comeon lads, no need to downvote Foxie, he’s my homie. He’s merely doing what we all do, trolling for some lulz.

      • FoxOneZA

Can you smell it brother? The flame wars are igniting after 6 years *sniff*

        • Banana Jim

It burns with the ferocity of a car tyre…. But at the end of the day, it’s all about the games. Sweet glorious games and the smiles of delight when you play a new title. Pure and utter bliss!

  • OVG

on-line, 2hour campaign and 8 years in production and endless studio closures due to HUUUUUUUGE costs to make the game use 1GIG of RAAM :P

  • OVG

Deep Down just reminded me of The Witcher 3, sweeeet

    • Banana Jim

That cave bru.. the lighting effects.. that CAVE!!

      • OVG

Screw game play, I just want to look at a rippling pond in a wet cave. I always got hard ons for realistic geography even down to photo scanned backgrounds like in GT5 or water, water always gets me.
My bro was on the back of the warthog in HALO4 last week and I kept driving in a pond to check out the ripples.

Its going to be NERD PARADISE. i WILL NOT GET ANYTHING DONE IN A GAME LIKE SKYRIM, Ill just stare at the cob webs blowing in the wind and shit.

        Good times.

        • Banana Jim

Man, I love realistic geography and geology too. I think Rage had some of the most awesome environments ever. Game sucked ass, but damn did the crossbedding on those limestone hills look sexy…

          • OVG

Crossbedding, i thought I was the only one :) I always walk as close as possible, then the moment it starts to show the pixels I quickly run back and move the camera…no no I did not see that… its real… just half squint. Its going to be Uncanny Vally (excuse the pun) that will be in the limelight next gen (excuse the pun again) :)

  • JayDiCee

Am I the only one who hoped for a complete RE1 and 2 (maybe 3) revamp after seeing the new Capcom engine at work? or a Final Fantasy VII Luminous Edition befor Square trolled us

  • http://www.theidiotspace.blogspot.com/ King_Hermy

Truelly great stuff. Really excited for this console. I need to get it.
