I am constantly, and consistently impressed by the sort of magical things that people manage to do in Minecraft – especially when its done in Vanilla, without the benefit of mods. People have built working binary computers, characters, functional musical instruments and recreated other games within the world builder. And now, there’s a functional, playable version of arcade classic Pac Man.
Built by a fellow with no prior programming experience, the Minecraft version of Pac-Man features the first level, complete with working ghost AI, music, sound effects, and a working joystick.
“Over a year ago I set myself the challenge of creating a fully functional Pacman minigame in Vanilla Minecraft using the same ghost AI as the original Pacman game,” Minecraft wizard MrSquishy says. “After many hours and attempts, I’ve finally managed to create a map that manages to accomplish this, and much more!”
Here’s what makes this particular Minecraft creation special:
- Full ghost AI identical to the real Pacman game
- All original sound effects
- Smooth movements for all ghosts and Pacman
- Directional updates for all ghosts and Pacman
- Live score and high score updates
- Edible fruit (2 per round)
- Functional side tunnels
- Wiggly joystick
- Fast resets
I have no idea how the hell people do this sort of thing, nor do I want. I’m content to just sit here, agape. I’ve posted before about what makes the ghost AI in Pac-Man so darned clever, and the fact that its been recreated in Minecraft is just mind-blowing.
