We’ve already spoken about how great Killzone looks on the PlayStation 4 but that wasn’t the only title showcased last night with Watch Dogs also being shown and possibly looking even better, if that is possible.
Ubisoft’s latest open world title appears to be setting a new benchmark for graphics and gameplay for sandbox titles and the fact that this is going to be appearing on the PlayStation 4 is a major early coup for Sony.
But it’s not all good news, it was revealed afterwards that this demonstration was not actually running on a PlayStation 4 but rather
“The Watch Dogs demo was running on a PC with specs close to the PS4.”
It’s not a big deal but it does take a bit of the gloss of the reveal, let’s hope that the specs really are close to the PS4 and this is the sort of graphics that we can expect in the next console generation.

It really seems like sony did this purely to be before MS, so none of it was done on a playstation 4 but on a PC, doesnt that seem abit stupid, oh hey we havent built one yet but this is what it will do.

Dev kits are essentially PCs in PC cases, but optimised or running the necessary OS. But, if you want to be pedantic, cast ye mind back to the xbox 360s reveal, all those in-game footage? They were running on optimised PCs.
The problem arises if the demo is running on hardware that’s essentially more advanced than the console itself. That’s where you go, “see… see… they’re all corrupt”. But, E3 and PAX are just around the corner so hopefully we’ll be wowed even further.

I acknowledge that but in the end if we take it to basic form, are you showing us what a PS4 is or are you showing us what a mid spec PC is?

Since it’s unfair to compare a console to a PC, since one is scalable and the other has a fixed hardware array (for it’s entire generation), I’d say it’s safe to say that what was showcased is what the PS4 can do (initially).
What I’m more interested in, is what the console will be able to achieve 4 years or 6 years down the line. The PS3 by PC standards is ancient, yet the wizardry that is performed on it, and the amount of detail that can be squeezed out of it, actually puts the top-range PC’s to shame. And I don’t meant PS3 = top-range PC, that would be ridiculous, but rather that a system limited by its hardware can still have software iterations that are optimised to insane levels. Ironically, this is where PC developers actually fail. The lowest common denominator (i.e. the vast majority of PC owners) do not have access to the highest settings in a PC game, and the difference between low and high settings are generally astronomical.

I suppose my disappointment comes from the fact that i expected to physically see the PS4 at this “reveal”.

I think they’re doing that at E3. Also, I think they don’t want to show their competition too much, and both Microsoft and SONY are in this weird cold war era dance-athon. Both want to see what the other is up to, and I think Microsoft would have loved to see the design to obviously.. cough… borrow a few elements.
