New modes, campaign revealed for Evolve

In case you haven’t noticed yet, I’m rather excited for Evolve. It went from not being on my radar at all, to being my most anticipated multiplayer game. However, we’ve only seen one mode – Hunt. Now, the entire evacuation campaign is explained.

According to Turtle Rock, there are over 800k possible paths – an insane amount of variety to ensure unique experiences each time you play. But how does that work? Well, there’s an Evacuation campaign linked to the new trailer that we saw yesterday. Here’s how it all fits together.

And here’s the non-YouTube version.

For those who don’t watch videos, the voice-over lady explains that a “campaign” is divided into five days or rounds. The premise is that Shear is overrun with monsters and the hunters must help as many civilians survive as possible, getting them to an escape ship in five days time. During those days, hunters and monsters go head to head in various modes. Depending on who wins each match, the next map will have unique upgrades or differences, from toxic clouds to defense turrets.

We’ve seen plenty of videos of the Hunt mode – that’s what was available to play at rAge, E3 and during the Alpha a month or so back. In case you’ve already forgotten what the mode entails, here’s a quick video (and the non-YouTube link).

Most interesting to me are the new game modes. First up, we’ve got Nest which is described as:

Nest mode has the Monster player protecting its brood, randomly scattered all over the map, while the Hunters are out to scramble some alien eggs. If the Monster is able to get to the eggs, it has the option to hatch one of them into a minion – a stage 1 Goliath that runs around, aggro-ing Hunters. Hunters win by destroying all the eggs and the minions, or killing the Monster.

I like the sound of that – it’s not just about hunting the monster on the map, but also about finding and destroying its eggs. Plus, as the monster, to be able to get a minion and take on the hunters together… now that sounds like a blast. Here’s the teaser video (and version for the non-YouTubers):

The inverse to this is the new mode, Rescue. Here, injured colonists are trying to escape from the monsters. Hunters will need to find, revive and protect them as they help the survivors flee to escape pods. Of course, the monsters will be trying to find the colonists, too. Whoever saves or kills the majority of the colonists, wins.

Of course, it all comes down to the final map, Defend.

Winner takes all. If you’re playing from the Hunter perspective, you’re desperately defending the Evacuation point while the ship is fueling up to escape. As a Monster, you’re leading hordes of Goliath minions as you attack the Evacuation point in waves. Will the Monsters break through and destroy everything? Or will the colonists get away in time?

Just look at how epic this mode will be:

The most interesting part of the whole thing is how the various modes fit together. Turtle Rock reveals a possible outcome of the campaign, imagining the monster winning certain rounds vs the hunters winning others. Here’s how it could all play out.

Evolve evac

Now this seems like a fantastic campaign, and I’m really keen to see how it plays out from map to map and mode to mode. All of these will be available to play next year in the Beta, and of course in the final release of the game. I am far too excited to get my hands on this; the more I hear about the game, the bigger and more nuanced it gets. This will definitely be a ton of fun to play with friends; I just might have to get it on all platforms so that I can play with everyone regardless of where they want to jam.

I wonder if this is a smart move for Evolve to promote a campaign and offline play. In the month of February 2015 there is going to be a big sand-box, 100+ hour campaign, good story, lot’s of content, called The Witcher 3. The Witcher 3 doesn’t have multiplayer and Evolve has multiplayer 4v1. I know that Evolve needs to market itself to the offline, campaign market to get more sales but going up against The Witcher 3. Wouldn’t it be better for Evolve to just be the Titanfall of shit, online only.

Evolve, look at that small map, play with bots, look and shoot at one monster and monster eggs. Sounds like it gets boring within an hour.

The Witcher 3 is cheaper and better with much more hours of gameplay.

Don’t support DRM. The Witcher 3 is coming.

Suppose its like any game – not everyone is as enamored with The Witcher 3 as you and would prefer something else. When I first heard about Evolve I wasn’t overly interested, but they marketing themselves very well so far. Game sounds better everytime I hear something new.

To be fair, Evolve looks like a game you can play for a decades as a pick up and play MP game. It looks like huge amounts of fun to me.

I don’t think there will be a lot of players still playing Evolve years to come. Hell I even doubt there will be much players left a few months later.
Most multiplayer games don’t last for years. And Evolve with it’s modes don’t look like it has lasting appeal.

Only time will tell I guess. But Quake for instance only has around 100 active players left in South Africa and that is good enough for full servers every night. And we play the same modes and same bunch of maps now for over a decade. 😛

If its fun, people will stay 🙂

Quake is a popular game. If i’m not mistaken, the birth of the multiplayer shooter. I doubt Evolve will ever reach Quake’s level. At best Evolve is just a try me fad. It will die soon enough. Evolve shouldn’t even be full retail price. At best R400 console and R150 PC.

I’m just trying to be real. Evolve is not the multiplayer game to bank everything on. Not even close to Quake. So I guess it didn’t evolve shit.

Well, Left 4 Dead 2 (same company that is making Evolve) is still being played quite a bit by people. You must remember, that just because you don’t think it can be fun doesn’t mean that lots of other people think so.

I for instance am not interested in the Witcher series at all. I find sandbox games tedious, so I stay away from them but that doesn’t mean that those games won’t be successful.

I really think that if they don’t screw up Evolve and is over-hyping it, that it’s going to be very successful game.

I don’t even think Evolve will live up to Left 4 Dead. When I look at Evolve I don’t see lasting appeal. Just something new to play for a month or two. I could be wrong. But I don’t think I am.

I think this is just degenerating into a “my opinion – your opinion” discussion. We’ll have to see what happens next year. I’m really hoping that you proven wrong, however. Really haven’t been this excited for a game in a while 😀

Game is definitely sounding better and better everytime I hear more. Will be interested what final product is like. But I ain’t pre-ordering another game! So it won’t be day one or even week one probably. I have now learned my lesson.

Ah man, I’m quite excited for this game! I loooved my experience in the Alpha, and was pleasantly surprised at how eager I was to keep playing. Never got a chance to play as the monster though – but that’s something I’m eager to save for the game release.

I’m really looking forward to Evolve. All these new details definitely put it onto my list for next year. With all the online issues lately with new games, I just hope they are prepared.

Really looking forward to this. Paid for the game as soon as I was done playing the alpha. I had been following the new feeds and knew that new monsters, hunters, maps, and modes would be available on day one. The new monster “Wraith” seems very interesting with it’s abilities of warp blast, abduction, decoy, and supernova. Here is a link to a picture http://i.imgur.com/iGirDbE.jpg . This game is shaping up to my expectations and I’m happy I’ve put my money down for this.
