More journalists choose the Xbox One over the PS4

Geoff won't edit this as he sucks as an editor

Back in early November I was invited over to London to join the review event for the upcoming Call of Duty: Ghosts. My review is here…but this isn’t about the review it’s about the experience and the strange things that I noticed.

On arrival we were greeted by Mark Rubin and a group of PR ladies and gentlemen from across Europe. After being given a brief rundown on the embargo dates and how the event was going to play out we were let loose to do as we pleased.

The basic setup is as follows: Each journalist had a next gen console and existing gen console in their allocated rooms. We got to choose before hand whether we wanted the Xbox or PlayStation family to co-inhabit our rooms.

Then downstairs there were 4 rooms. The first room had Xbox One multiplayer and Xbox 360 multiplayer. The second room was identical but with PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3’s instead. The third and 4th room had Xbox One and Xbox 360 squads and extinction and vice versa.

As the event started I headed straight upstairs to play the single player campaign. After about 3 hours I took a break and headed back down to play some multiplayer. I walked into the first room and there wasn’t a single person on the Xbox consoles. I wondered if they were all playing single player still but when I walked into the next room I found them all. Every single journalist available was crammed around the PlayStation 4 consoles.

It soon became evident why, as the PlayStation 4 visuals were markedly more impressive than the Xbox One and that had attracted everyone to them. After a space opened up I sat myself down and started jamming. I’m more used to the Xbox layout but I quickly got a handle on the PS4 controller which is light years ahead of the DS3.

However I started to notice that after about an hour or so my thumbs were starting to feel uncomfortable on the sticks. They just didn’t quite sit right and the lower edge of the stick was agitating my thumb. Now at this time I thought it was simply that I wasn’t used to the sticks being in-line.

However after getting back I found this image online where a gamer has apparently only been using his controller for 2 weeks.

Notice the wearing on the left stick at the bottom

Now that was exactly where it was feeling uncomfortable to me. Anyway I didn’t think much of it and I headed back up to complete the single player campaign.

The next morning I headed down and I noticed that the journalists had now split 50/50 in each of the first two rooms with a smattering of journalists in the other two rooms. So I sat down at an empty Xbox One console and joined in. After a solid 4 hours of gaming the controller still felt perfectly comfortable and I noticed that the two banks of Xbox One consoles had now been totally filled up.

I took a break and wandered over to the PS4 room only to find that it was empty except for 2 gamers who were busy doing screen capturing.

And that was the last time I saw anyone on the PlayStation 4’s. Some of the journalists were complaining that they wanted to play the PS4 version more but they couldn’t find anyone to join them as everyone else was very happy playing the Xbox One version.

Now this is a hardly a scientific study by any means and maybe the majority of journalists at this event were PlayStation fanboys but what it does say for sure is that if you have the Xbox One you are not going to feel like you are missing out when playing Ghosts as the game plays at least as well as the PlayStation 4 version and is in my opinion more comfortable to play for long periods of time.

The PS4 version looks better and that is something Microsoft deserve to be slated for but when it comes down to the actual experience of playing, well then possibly the Xbox One version is the one that you are going to want to go for. Oh and before we go, here is some direct feed capture of the Xbox One gameplay – followed by some PlayStation 4 footage in all its YouTube glory.

First up let’s get some Domination going:

And some Deathmatch:

As a comparison this is cranked on a PlayStation 4:

Next gen is almost upon us and this is a huge deal for us folk that love our gaming simple and easy on our little console and every single damn time we have to hear PC this and master that when a article is posted not about PC’s but about consoles. It’s true yes you are better, it will never change agreed because new hardware keeps coming out every couple of months, but every single article? I get it that PC gamers feel left out because there isn’t really anything exciting except Star Citizen whose hype is so blown up that it’s on par with Moses who is going to lead PC Gamers to the promised land or something.

This is a silly rant I know but I need to vent a bit and I love my PC for it gave me GOG.com and Planetside 2. But I now know how @lazygamers:disqus feels every time I troll COD.

Not to sound rude, but that’s called exercise. Sure, it’s only your hand, but your hand has muscles. If you’ve conditioned your hand to playing with a Xbox 360 controller, the muscle memory will allow you to play on the similar Xbox One controller without causing muscle fatigue. However, repositioning your hand for the PS4 controller will exercise different muscles, resulting in fatigue. It’s like doing hammer curls instead of regular curls. You exercise the same areas, but hit different muscles.

Very valid points, but I don’t completely agree, because it’s got a lot to do with design as well, and we’re all different too. I used to play on PS consoles for years, PS1, PS2 and a bit on the PS3, before I got my Xbox360, but my hands were always, always sore after playing on a PlayStation controller for a while, and this includes my Logitech controller for my PC which is similar to a PS controller.

Some people find the PS controller more comfortable than the Xbox, others are the opposite, some prefer a mouse in their hand and a keyboard at the other. I find that the positioning of everything on the Xbox controller makes it for me, the design is a lot more comfortable for me, and I can reach everything without looking like a contortionist.

You might find the PS4 room was full on the first day because thats where they decided to start. On the next day they moved to the Xbox to see what its like.

I’m not a fanboy of either of these expensive paper weights, but I think it has to be said that if you like the Xbox controller and the PS4 console, then purchase one of the many Xbox-styled third party PS controllers.

Actually, people were saying that the controller was used as a demo version and wasn’t the official controller. As for the advertising last time it was PS4 and people were saying LG were pro them. I actually appreciate that because sometimes I feel like there is not enough opinion published by media outlets on the net. But, this article feels very contrived to me, and it reads like a sales pitch – that’s just how it comes across to me.

Yes the instant I saw it I thought PS… if it’s that obvious then it’s badly done. Zoom in on the pic to original size, look at that thumb stick start from the point of around 4pm (if it were a clock face), till 10pm. Way more blurring going on in that portion vs any other part of the picture. I can actually see a line running right across the diameter of the thumb stick where the blurring clearly starts. Does not look natural in the slightest.

            November 13, 2013 at 09:59

We’ll have to agree to disagree, the focus is out when i look at original size – hence the blurring. There is simply too much depth and texture for it to be a photoshop job. What is of more interest are the scratch marks just above the wear… makes it look like it was done on purpose. But photoshopped, I’m not buying it.

I read the thread and comments on Reddit. The guy is lying through his teeth. Looks like he took a sander and did that to his controller. Look at the scratches at the top of the stick also. Also, it is smooth, something that usually happens after a year or two of playing.

But ergonomically you would rest the bigger part of your thumb on that exact spot. So when you start to push forward, all the friction between thumb and stick would be right there.

Kind of funny given that guys like Sessler, Gies, Beer and others have been astroturfing for xbone. I see a storm coming and it’s going to be a battle for the very soul of game ‘journalism’. Years ago, if you said IGN was on the take, folks would have just laughed and told you to take the tin foil hat off, but there’s definitely been a shift. It’s not uncommon to hear people questioning the credibility of the games media, and I, for one, couldn’t be happier. Interesting times lads… Interesting times.

Um, even AMD said it’s the most powerful APU they’ve ever made, and since the Xbox One uses a…wait for it, AMD APU….. And we know the RAM is faster.

        http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/2250802/amd-to-sell-a-cut-down-version-of-sonys-playstation-4-apu

We also know that the dev kits filed with the FCC have a maximum clock frequency of 2.75ghz.

        http://www.engadget.com/2013/07/16/sony-ps4-development-kit-fcc/

We also know that not less than 3 multi-platform titles currently in development are performing better on the PS4. This isn’t like the Ps3, where the power is hard to tap into. It’s exact opposite, it’s easier to develop for, AND it’s more powerful.

And finally, come on….using a random image from reddit? There have been tons of PS4 controllers sold thus far, and only 1 has this issue? The material coating the thumb stick looks to be the exact same material used in the DS3, and from MY experience, that shit doesn’t just…rub off.

          Let me set you straight
1 AMD said it’s most powerful APU they built TO DATE, XBOX HAS SOC and MICROSOFT BUILT IT.
          2 GDDR5 is 176GB/s and eSRAM+ DDR3 is 272GB/s (esram latency being 3-5ns and gddr5 being 250-450ns means esram can do 30-40 reads till gddr5 does one)
3 FCC maximum clock of 2.75GHz is for GDDR5 not CPU (Jaguar core is rated at 2.0GHz maximum)
4 There is no game performing better on PS4 maybe has higher resolution with FPS issues and hardly any difference in visuals
5 PS2, Xbox 360, Wii all have very similar memory layout as X1 so devs have plenty of knowledge on it
6 framerate issues are due to Dev tools taking longer to get to publisher because they implemented a lot more stuff in them than ps4 tools.
7 PS4 does not have 1.8TF for graphics rendering but 1.43 because 4CU’s are GPGPU only per Cerny X1 is 1.31TF + Full audio chip (audio would take 2-3 jaguar cores to do so on PS4 it’s done on GPU which further takes away from that 1.43TF)+ Move engines (on ps4 the gpu has to stop work move stuff then resume in fraction of a second but still impacting at least 1 cycle for it)
8 you see as end result you have 1.43TF -audio-moving vs 1.31TF and 176GB/s vs 272GB/s (real life 150GB/s vs 200GB/s bandwidth) so which is more powerful?

Maybe using more knowledge and common sense instead of reading articles of what so called journalists picked up from NeoGaf?

When they do overall system TF they only do Calculations which would include GPGPU but excludes audio chip and move engine impact in which case leaves PS4 looking more powerful ON PAPER but in real life it’s a different story where MS will be using Cloud for GPGPU and another thing is X1 has hardware implementation for Megatextures where PS4 will have to do it through Software to accomplish it with worse result of course. Do some research on Megatextures/Tiled Resources and see what it means for gaming. Pretty much nothing ever repeats every single strain of hair or grass is unique

Thanks for “setting the record straight”, how kind of you. Your points sound all very impressive and well constructed. One huge glaring problem though. Just about every resource intensive 3rd party game (and in some cases 1st party) is running lower resolutions, and in some cases lower frame rates too on XB1. BF4 is lower res and fps on XB1. Dead Rising 3 is 720p and sometimes dipping to 16 fps. Oh and did you just try tell me that higher resolutions do not equal better performance??? Wow.

            November 13, 2013 at 10:08

            1) I’m pretty sure both Microsoft and Sony buy the APUs from AMD, because they are custom silicon designs and no-one outside of Intel, AMD and Via are allowed to see or alter the inner works of x86 chips. AMD sells the chips to Sony and Microsoft, Global Foundries/TSMC builds them.

            3) The PS4’s memory frequency is an effective 5500MHz (actual is 1375MHz). That 2.7GHz rating is for the Jaguar CPU cores. I’ve seen reviews for Jaguar-based products that can ramp up over 2.2GHz, although most of them stick to 2.0GHz and below to save on heat and power use.

            4) Factually incorrect. BF4 on the One has missing details and textures when compared with the PS4 version and dips lower on the framerate scale in intense scenes. That’s just one example, there will be plenty more to come during the launch period.

            7) The PS4 also has a hardware DSP for audio, confirmed by Cerny. CUs being reserved for GPGPU is news to me, because Sony changed GCN to specifically avoid having to dedicate hardware for a specific purpose and risking having that hardware sit idle.

            9) Hardware support for megatextures? What on earth are you talking about? Tiled resources also allows devs to use system memory to store textures instead of putting them on GPU memory.

            10) “Nothing ever repeats” – are you talking about draw calls?

I wish Ps4 controller went for the route of copying Xbox controller.

@R4 3DS I do completely agree with you that if you are about to play First person shooter game than no other device is better than PC.

I love the fact that the PS4 is a damn good console, and it’s got PSN, and 1080p (trolololol) but I’ve always loved the Xbox controller. I’ve always found the PS controller to be uncomfortable after a long period of time, causing my hands to get sore, and that is as far back as the original PS controller (and my Logitech Rumblepad 2, which looks like a PS controller).

You can ask anyone that has played online with me on Xbox that I can play for hours, and my hands aren’t sore even after playing solidly for 6 hours.

First it was the DRM policies – Sony trounced Xbox. Then it was THE POWA/RESOLUTION – sony destroyed xbox. Now we are down to the controller, and i’ll give this one to xbox.

Oh @lazygamers:disqus if I had to choose a console just on comfort for gaming… I’d take the Xbone.

Yeah the PS4 is “superior” with it’s 1080p and PSN+ etc, but that controller will KILL my hands.

That would explain why Sony is giving PS4 to Journo’s at it launch, sounds like that is going to be the only way they will get a good rating from them. Here is your FREE PS4, give us a good rating now.

I was wondering whether the new controller would have a better feel to it. I prefer Sony, because the company has a way better track record.

It would be nice if they dedicated a whole team and a sample group of like 100 people to testing new controller designs.

I think I may have already mentioned this somewhere before. Consoles have more injuries named after them than a PC (we have none actually as CTS is not PC specific).

I don’t get the hate towards the PS controller (as I’ve mentioned before). I can play for hours without my hands feeling tired. Since I also have a left thumb that can’t bend after a disagreement with a door in my early years I still feel far more comfortable with the PS layout than the MS layout. I have to mention that I almost never play on the MS console, which might be the reason for not being used to the controller, but I really don’t have any problem with playing on the PS for hours without it getting uncomfortable.

As a side note: Gavin after 3 hours and not finished with the SP campaign? You’re such a N00B 😉

Just one thing: does no one question all the obvious scratches on the left stick of that DS4? That is, in no way, caused by normal wear and tear. I’m sorry, but taking that image seriously is a red flag.

    I lied.

Another thing: if EVERYBODY was in the PS4 room at the start, doesn’t it make sense that, as time wore on, journalists would start spending more time on the XB1? I mean, you spend the first day and a half on PS4, and the last day and a half on XB1. Is that not a more logical conclusion?

One final thing: people coming from the 360 have a tendency to hold a DualShock the same way… which doesn’t work, because the controller layout isn’t the same. When I pick up my DS3, my thumb rests on the top of the left stick(unless I’m playing Gran Turismo, for some reason). Based on the wear I’ve seen on literally hundreds of used 360 controllers(GameStop veteran), the contact point for thumbs is about where the damage on the DS4 is located. It’s not exactly the largest sample group, but as someone with a healthy amount of friends that game or have gamed on both consoles(and someone who’s run a few Madden and fighting game tournaments and midnight releases), I’ve also noticed that PS3 players tend to use more the last segment of their thumb on the sticks, while 360 player use more of the joint area.

Between that(which would place the DS4’s ridge right in that spot where there isn’t as much flesh on your finger) and the difference in stick placement, it’s no surprise that someone who’s not used to holding a DualShock might find themselves in discomfort. Similarly, since I’m used to holding a DualShock, the battery pack on the back of the 360 pad isn’t comfortable to me.

My dad is stronger than your dad. So maybe more journalists prefer Xbawks over PS4. Sony people stick with sony and microsoft sticks with microsoft. The grass is always greener on the other side, so lets waste our lives hoping over the fence to see the grass greener on the other otherside.

The arthur definitely sounds like a fanboy to me, trying real hard to not come of like one. But only a fanboy would like the X1 better because of the controller and having more people to play with (read: online). I have never heard a casual find any difference between the two controllers (im talking the xbox and ps3 controllers). Claiming the Xbox controller (talking the X1 controller here) is more comfortable/better is a fanboy talking point. Also not “caring” about resolution is the new Xbot talking point. Except for whenan X1 game does do 1080, then it suddenly matters again. Phony fucks! Sweating a company, pathetic!
