I still stand by my assertion that Kevin Butler is the reason the PlayStation 3 was saved in the current generation. When he arrived on the scene the PS3 was seriously struggling to keep up with the Xbox 360 and within a few short months it all turned around and the PS3 came screaming back.
Now every time I see him I think of the PlayStation 3 but I have to admit this time it makes me a little bit sad.
Here he is in a new commercial for KFC (Gavin you silly man, it’s Wendy’s), but he’s not even the lead.
Yes I want a pretzel bun KFC thing so the ad works but still Kevin Butler is too important to be relegated to bit part KFC adverts.

Things just haven’t been the same for him since Sony caught him playing Mario Kart…

From reading up on how it all came to be, He actually shot himself in the foot, but I suppose that’s fairly typical “actor slash model slash wannabe advertisement mogul” behaviour. I know at the time, everyone got upset over the fact that Sony was bullying a poor actor and laying claim to his face and person (as if he was a modern-day slave), but in fact it was much simpler. The guy was still under contract, and he made the advert with bridgestone through his advertisement company and did the dirty with a nintendo nunchuck. Apparently, he ended up have to pay via the settlement and got slapped with a two year non-compete clause.

That’s unfortunate, Butler should’ve known better. No matter how his contract worked out with Sony, his overall exposure went through the effin roof. Hell, the guy was part of their press conferences FFS. Silly Butler is definitely silly.

And now he’s in a Wendy’s advert with who knows what sort of restrictions on the roles that he can take (for the next two years). That has to sting for any actor. I guess the lesson here is, make sure you read your contract, and don’t do the dirty with a nintendo nunchuck on a tyre ad.

Well, I think the lesson is actually more simple than that. When under contract for a company, don’t be seen in a commercial setting for another company, wielding a device for the major competitor of your current contracted employer lol. That’s just common sense. 🙂
It’s too bad though, really wish it could’ve worked out differently for both sides.

Kevin Butler made inroads, but I doubt he made a huge difference (especially outside of the US). The truth is the PS3 only became this dominating force, after the hacking incident, it meant that SONY were forced to overhaul PSN/SEN, rethink their marketting of PS3 and in turn give us PSN+.
Looking back, Lulsec, that idiot Geohot and Anon – in their extreme and misguided stupidity – actually did gamers a huge favour.

Wasn’t PS+ around before the Lulsec attack? I think after the attack as a welcome back, Sony gave 2 games to everyone… I believe. And in the process they picked up a ton of PS+ subscriptions.
Definitely agree that the incident forced them to overhaul PSN/SEN though.

Nope, PS+ came after the haxxors. I think the free games were a test for the new system.
