MarioKart8

Yes, I’m looking very forward to Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U. I got to have a go with the game at E3 and rAge this year, and it’s a beautiful, smooth 60fps thrill ride. If we’re being honest though, it really is just more Mario Kart, and I really wish Nintendo would be more honest about its regular rehashes. If you’ve ever watched any of Screen Junkies’ Honest Trailers, then you know what to expect from this one from Smosh. It’s an Honest Mario Kart Trailer.

Yes, much of this is obvious to anyone who’s ever played Mario Kart, but I’ll be damned if every second of it isn’t true. Still, despite knowing all of this, my excitement for Mario Kart 8 is through the roof. I’ve even recently  hauled out my copy of Mario Kart Wii and played a bunch of 4-player same screen multiplayer with the family. It was all fun until my daughter regularly and repeatedly kicked my ass. I’ve since hidden the disc away.

MK8

Mario Kart 8 is coming to your Wii U at the end of May this year, unlike some other high profile flagship titles for other systems. Unlike that game as well, Mario Kart 8 is output in 1080p, and runs at a fluid 60fps. Nintendo South Africa also recently confirmed that the special edition of the game, which includes a model of that blasted Blue Shell will indeed be hitting South African retail shelves.

Standby for awesome Kart racing. Here’s a look at the game itself.

If Mario Kart was honest… it would rename itself, because last time I checked bikes and quads weren’t karts.

When will Nintendo realise they need to change to keep up with the times? I mean, the top 3 have taken salary cuts, that not warning enough?

Yes they should release their games in 720p at 30 fps.

Donkey Kong disagrees. Actually over the past 12 months I’ve played more Wii U exclusives than Xbox or PS3.

Sadly their finances do not disagree. They’ve lost money two years in a row for the first time in their history and have acknowledged that something has got to change. Donkey Kong is an awesome game, but it isn’t making them secure.

Nintendo is much, much stronger financially than both PlayStation and Microsoft.

Oh absolutely correct. They have done damn well over the 100 plus years they have been about. That being said, they know they are making a loss, I mean the CEO has taken a pay cut and has also said they need to rethink the model. Let’s hope they can!

Mario kart is the most successful racing-game franchise in the world. I’ll be pre-ordering it.

I don’t want MarioKart to change, it should do EXACTLY what it has always done. Add some new tracks, make the visuals crispier, add a new item or two and add a new character or two. THATS IT. If it ain’t broken… If you want a different kart racer, get Sonic All Star Racer, which is also good. But after an hour or two, you’ll get this feeling like you wish it was more like Mariokart, which is how you’ll feel if Ninty did a complete re-do of the franchise. Also… kinda lame that none of the two big online retailers have this game on their websites. I’ve emailed them both, Kalahari didn’t bother to respond and Takealot is still looking at it (but at least they responded and even apologized for not having an answer right away)… weak…
