H1Z1 is a free to play, massively multiplayer Zombie game

I’m a huge Walking Dead fan but I’ve noticed in recent months that the number of fellow fans have been dropping like flies and the grumblings about zombies in games have been getting louder.

So it was with quite some surprise when I saw that SOE’s newest game is yet another Zombie survival game. As expected it’s another Massively Multiplayer Online game and will apparently be free to play, I’m sure with some possible micro-transactions.

You are dropped in a post apocalyptic world which is in ruins and your typical undead zombies are wandering around. Taking a slight change from the standard lore is that the zombies are pretty quick in this game but at the same time they aren’t very smart and are much scarier at night.

You need to survive against the zombies and other players and apparently the world will be a living breathing entity. You can team up with other players and build forts to defend or take over vehicles to get across large areas quickly.

Each zombie has its own AI so every one you meet will apparently react differently. Though when their goal is to eat you I can’t see how many different ways that could play out.

H1Z1 is coming to PC’s, obviously, but they have hinted that it may land on PlayStation as well in the near future.

Has Sony Online Entertainment come to the party late here or is a corporate backed DayZ what many people have been waiting for?

So far the game looks pretty good and it’s still early days so hopefully this will evolve into something incredible.

The Admiral plays Planetside, another F2P SOE game, so he will be the best candidate to calm our fears, or confirm them…

I’m excited, looks like it has great potential!

According to Smedley, the environment of H1Z1 is going to be ‘orders of magnitude’ larger than Planetside 2, using a custom variant of the Forgelight engine.

I don’t know how I feel about that though. They make plenty of references to Walking Dead and then point out the server can hold “Thousands” of players like Planetside. Now every good Zombie aficionado knows that a zombie apocalypse would have a handful of survivors so there is that. Ill still give it a try though.

That is a proven horrible idea for games like this. DayZ Epoch Mod proved that beyond a doubt.

It depends on the size of the actual map. If the map is fricken huge with a thousand players, that would be awesome. I don’t want to see people running around every minute or two though…

They just mentioned they wont be selling guns or ammo they want to make it harder to get them so the game wont turn completely into a FPS..

I’m extensively hooked on another SOE game, Planetside 2, and the F2P model is really not bad.

Your starting gear is good enough, and the unlocks are not that hard to earn. You don’t have to be good at shooting even, you can support your team with heals / repairs / resupplies / etc and also get the “certification points” to unlock further items.

Sure there are a few easy unlocks that the paying customers get early, but the gratification when sniping a high level dude with custom armor and camo with your base sniper rifle, is a feeling hard to beat!

If this H1Z1 game uses the same sort of levelling and support, I really think it will work.

If it was from any other company, I’d be hesitant. But SOE has proven to me with Planetside 2 that it can be done (the F2P thing)

Memberships are kinda expensive, and allow much faster levelling. So if you are prepared to grind, and not pay, then go for it. I have yet to spend a single but of currency on this game (haha) and for the amount of entertainment it has given me, I’d say thank you SOE!

um , i dont mind free stuff , but i hate having to pay to have fun

can they not make 2 versions of free games ? like here is the free2play and here is the $30 vanilla edtion (the difference would be that the version you have paid for, has all the basics and maybe a little bit of the advanced stuff- think pokemon starter packs)…. personally i would prefer just to pay upfront and have all the content once , instead of doing these $3 here and $4 there …..we all know paying with your credit card is risky …
