One of the benefits of working right next to a set of consoles is that I can check out online goodies at the drop of a hat. One of the downsides of doing work on a laptop that has gone full retard though, is that I can’t get that content up very quickly sometimes. Anyway, here’s the first 15 minutes of GTA Online.
At first, I thought my avatar looked like Loki on Methamphetamines. And then Gavin kindly pointed out that he resembles Sheldon from the Big Bang Theory, a TV series that I hate with the passion of a million suns going supernova. At the same time.
Suffice to say, this character is ruined for me now. Damn you Gavin, damn you. Anyway, how’s GTA Online treating you so far?

I hate Big Bang theory. But I love Penny. Glad to see GTA is up and running. Now to hold my breath till I pass out so that when I wake up it should be time to go home.

Talk about huge let down!! couldn’t even start the first race! damn tutorials and millions of people online! I got kicked 5 times eventually resorted to playing Sp again. Rockstar buy more servers please!!

Thus is the issue with online. Always was. Always will be. The capacity for the first week’s influx is always underestimated.
However, one must remember that it would cost way too much to have servers running enough just to service the first initial blast where everyone is trying compared to what will eventually happen. They need to have enough servers to hold the expected “average to high” use in a normal month. That capacity needs to be doubled to have the first few days run smoothly and so is not affordable or even logical. Otherwise they end up with a server room full of very underutilised servers that just eat up costs

I was thinking that too! The only problem is, once people get online this game might become bigger than wow! or close!
Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew
October 2, 2013 at 08:05
Yeah, agreed, but then they add capacity as needed. Can’t have you run out of money before enough people are playing just to have day 1 go smooth.
BUT
I still am with you on the fact that game studios always grossly underestimate the capabilities of the servers and they never seem to learn.

1 billion copies sold, should give them more than enough money… right?
Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew
October 2, 2013 at 08:12
haha. True that. Although I believe they thought that 1billion sold does not equal 1 billion simultaneous login attempts. Hehe. Little did they know

If I had to guess at least 80% have tried to go online! Think that’s wow levels or more! How many players were on wow like 600 mil?
Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew
October 2, 2013 at 08:21
Dude no. Wow is only like 10mil or something (I stand under correction though as I can’t recall exactly)

October 2, 2013 at 08:26
Agreed. I think at the height of WoW they had 11 million subscribers, but never online at the same time. @timster1033:disqus DUDE! 600 mill is almost 10% of the Earth’s population man! HAHAHAHA

Okay fair enough not enough coffee for brain this morning, but then how do you get 1 billion copies sold! It is possible right?
Rincethis
October 2, 2013 at 08:32
Ya, but how many of those billion have internet. I’d actually like to see the regional sales figures too. If you think about it, America only has like 320 mil people in, and not all of them have internet. So I am assuming the majority would be in EU as China don’t sell consoles (well, in the grey market they do, but that doesn’t count). If that is the case, it could be a matter of not enough EU servers (for reasons both me and @LlewellynCrossley:disqus have already said). And seeing as South Africa runs on EU servers, there is our problem!

What if 80 % of those billion had internet?
Rincethis
October 2, 2013 at 08:53
Not sure where you are getting this billion from? They MADE $1 billion in 3 days, if they had sold 1 billion they would have made $60 billion…

I think they know that on day 1 there WILL be issues, and do as much as they can, but not ALL they can. They know that in a month the hype would have died down, and all the extra servers would be a waste…

B0llocks on the “Cost too much issue”. Firstly, because they made a billion dollars off this game in like a week. Secondly, there are services these days with this amazing thing called the cloud that effectively provision capacity on-demand. So when you have all 100-million people logging-on on day one, yes that’s a lot of server to provision and pay for. But then when the hype has cooled and you only have 5-million hardcore gamers coming in regularly, the cost automatically drops as the capacity-on-demand algorithm scales down the server requirements. Simple.

Got kicked a couple of times, but overall managed to get to Level 10 last night, was a blast. Only really did some robberies and a couple of repo’s (1-4 players).
