Pillars of Eternity is a Kickstarter RPG that grabbed massive funding and attention, and then did the right thing and disappeared off the radar to go make the game. The game has since been delayed into next year, but it’s ready for pre-order and showing off some mighty impressive gameplay and design.
Here is the latest trailer from Pillars of Eternity (and for those without YouTube access, you can head over here):
With a promise of returning to the roots of the RPG genre, I like the look and feel of this game; I just wish it weren’t PC only. I know, PC master race and whatnot, but these are the types of games that I prefer to play on my couch with a controller. I suppose I will need to just get a controller for the computer and play using that, but it just doesn’t quite feel the same. Perhaps I’ll grab it through Steam and then play it through a laptop?
I think the part I’m most excited about it the upgradable base. Oh, and the branching story lines. Those are two of my favorite things in RPGs, and it looks like Pillars of Eternity will be getting them right.
You can go pre-order Pillars of Eternity and get some mystery items. Of course, if you backed the project on Kickstarter, you will automatically get the pre-order bonuses for free. At least this is nice for those people who missed out on funding the project originally – you can still throw your money at it.
Are you a backer already, or will you be giving them your money after the fact? Does this look like a return of all things awesome to RPGs, or are you more interested in games like Dragon Age: Inquisition and The Witcher 3?

This is that old-school kinda cool.
Here’s a screen from early days, you can see all the smaller changes they’ve been making. Immediately I noticed all the effort with accurate but fantastical aesthetics (like the detail on the waterfall, amaze-balls).

Oh man this is going to be awesome! The gameplay really reminds me of the infinity engine games (BG1,2 IWD1,2 and PST) which is a very good thing! I’m glad they didn’t compromise it.
It’s going to be a while before I want to play this though : first want to finish BG2, IWD2, Temple of Elemental Evil

November 12, 2014 at 13:26
IWD2?
Have you tried Wasteland 2? Busy with it now and I can’t keep myself away, every other game can wait!

Icewind Dale 2 🙂 I want to finish all of the infinity engine games first, since each and everyone is an absolute gem, and I still have IWD2 and BG2 left to go.
I have not tried Wasteland 2 no but I want to, especially since Fallout1&2 are my favorite rpgs of all time! I just need a proper desktop first – my gpu gave in 🙁

November 12, 2014 at 13:55
Aah. Silly me. Definitely all great choices for solid entertainment.
Sucks with your gpu giving in, sorry to hear that. Can’t imagine exploring the Wasteland without a 4k res, as much as I love the game the character models are poorly done, especially compared to the rest of the game. Hope you get back to delicious eye candy asap!
edit: Also, I have a GTX 260 and a 560ti, just sitting at home in CT. If you like I can sell you one for cheap-cheap.

Thanks man I appreciate it 🙂 but at the moment the lack of a gaming rig is working to my advantage. You know, work, studies and stuff 😛
But I’m with you : I want my next desktop to be a solid 4k gaming one. Some titles deserve to be run on more than medium settings on my 15” laptop.

@disqus_3ihQj32EWp:disqus, It would be fun to sit on the couch to play, BUT it’s the controls and UI, It’s simply not going to be successfully implemented on a console, even playing on PC (mac) with a controller might not even be an option. I look at Divinity, Wasteland 2 and classic cRPGs, They could probably only work on WiiU, because of that touch screen gamepad…maybe.
Ceyber, Hans
November 12, 2014 at 13:21
Agreed, a controller would be too simple an interface to enjoy the game properly.
Solution: Wireless everything.

Lots of girls tell me how they love plugging their Kinect in to their X-Box, that doesn’t mean it’s the right thing to do.

November 12, 2014 at 13:21
Yeah, this, just like the old infinity engine games, is a mouse+keyboard game. You would have to radically redesign the interface to somehow incorporate a controller. The gameplay consists of frequent pauses followed by copious amounts of move and attack orders to keep everyone alive

I really hope this does incredibly well commercially. It would be several orders of magnitude beyond awesome if it triggers a new series of titles made with the same engine, just like what happened with the infinity engine after the release of Baldurs gate.

“Does this look like a return of all things awesome to RPGs, or are you more interested in games like Dragon Age: Inquisition and The Witcher 3?”
Both. I’m looking forward to DA:I and The Witcher 3, but games like Pillars can at times easily be more addictive and fun to play.

Completely agree. Art and style defines the beauty of your game, not graphic prowess. Crysis 3 was technically gorgeous but one of the most empty gaming experiences I can remember.
“Get from A to B in the coolest armor evurrr. Spot, stalk and kill a few aliens along the way. Just make sure to stop and soak in the sights every 3-4 seconds. Armageddon can wait. F*** depth and ridiculous things like motivational elements.”

November 12, 2014 at 15:36
Oh yes style can really do a lot for a game. That is why, to this day, WoW remains a beautiful game in my eyes. I periodically get withdrawal symptoms 😛 missing the little things : strolling in Elwynn Forest, or walking on the beaches of Darkshore:
Ceyber, Hans
November 12, 2014 at 16:01
WoW is and will always be the definitive start and go-to game of the MMO genre.
Yes, the base has dwindled by half, but that’s still millions of players in a relatively old game.
Make immersive, fun and culturally-rich content and people will flock to your product for years to come (disappointments like AC:Unity should sit up take note).
