Goat

Far Cry 4 looks like an awesome game filled with cool secrets hidden through the pseudo-Himalayan environment. The impressions of fake Nepal aren’t just based on a Hollywood view of the country, though – the guys from Ubisoft actually visited the real Nepal. Unfortunately, that also included some animal sacrifice.

In a new video showing some behind the scenes, making-of processes, Ubisoft showed the trip to Nepal:

The video isn’t really as slick as the usual Ubisoft promotional stuff. Perhaps it’s just because the environment was also more chaotic and they wanted to convey that, but I’m not sure that this was the best move. Upon arrival in Kathmandu, the Ubisoft team was invited to an animal sacrifice to thank the gods (or please the gods? They seemed a bit confused) after the monsoon. I’m glad the developers had an authentic experience and understood more about what Nepal looks, sounds and smells like. However, it just seems a bit weird to talk about animal sacrifice in the middle of game development – somehow I’m not sure that was necessary for the video.

Ubisoft is such an off the wall company. Their games are generally quite cool because they’re able to try new things and provide really authentic experiences where possible – except for jumping off building into haystacks or their strange idea of what hacking is. I’m glad that they do this research and I’m sure that it will make the game even better. That said, I’m not sure that this was the promotional video that Ubisoft needed to make.

urm… So now Ubisoft is in to animal sacrifice? Is that what’s required to get their bloody client to work?

I’m going to guess that they’re showing this because they have animal sacrifices in the game & want to preempt the complaints about that with the fact that it actually happens in real life.

PSA: For anyone on a standard Uncapped Axxess account and finding that you have slow download/speeds, etc, it’s because Axxess is throttling/shaping EVERYONE that’s not on an unshaped account.

    Just so you know.

Also CALL PETA ON UBISOFT so they can’t play either!

Lol… funny story, they changed to MTN Business as their backbone system, and apparently they can’t keep up with the need on their network. They’re apparently waiting on Telkom to do upgrades, but have a 6-8 week waiting period.

I’m fighting with them now to get more information, etc. as we’re a reseller of their services.

Apparently it calls for it, even when an account has 12 gigs of usage on it for the rest of the month, and then we can’t even pull e-mail down on it anymore.

Dude, if you only use the internet between 5pm and 9am the next morning, get an Incredible Connection 2mbps account for R99. It’s unshaped daily between those times and on weekends.

Yeah have seen that, but we have clients that use these accounts for their businesses and can’t even pull e-mail down, and download speeds on a 4Mbps line is running at 10kb/s.

It’s not suitable for business hours unfortunately. For that you’ll have to use a small capped account.

Yeah that’s true… what I meant by “we have clients that use these accounts for their businesses ” is that they’re using standard uncapped accounts… which are shaped to the extent mentioned above with 12GB of usage on the account for the whole month.

            It’s ridiculous really.

This views more like a documentary than a promotional vid. Animal sacrifices are part of the culture in that region, and the developers went to experience the culture to be able to produce a better experience for the gamers. sacrifices might not even be in game, they just happened to be able to attend one for their research.

oh, and PS4 ROCKS!!!, so not getting this game for my PC, i despise those damned gaming clients!

    TL;DR

So… you want the behind the scenes video to not show you what happened behind the scenes? Because animal sacrifice doesn’t happen? Or because we’re so sensitive to animal rights that we ignore world and ideological perspectives not our own that are central to the region which will be recreated for our gaming pleasure? Immersion, yo. Works for me. 🙂

I honestly think that the video shows us, in an actual real and authentic way, that they’re trying to be as emic about the production of this video game in the region they’ve chosen as possible. I.e. not relying on outdated travellers accounts of the region to recreate their “Western Authentic” experience.

South Africa cant really talk when goat and cow slaughters at weddings and other events here are still common as well. Also to say it was harmed in the making of the game is one hell of a misleading headline.

It has nothing to do with the game, it’s a behind the scene’s look to give people a better idea of what Nepal is like and end up making more engaging for fans.
