The Know is a major gaming rumor channel on YouTube that is sometimes right about rumors, like when it gave common sense timelines for the release of Tomb Raider on PC and PS4. Of course they also dropped the ball on Microsoft looking to buy Silent Hills. Their latest video makes some pretty outlandish claims about why we will never see Half Life 3, but it has already pretty much been debunked.

The video gave two reasons why we won’t see Half Life 3: Valve is making so much money from Steam and micro transactions (TF and Dota 2) that there’s no reason for them to make another full game; and the “gamer culture” is so toxic right now and people have such high expectations for Half-Life 3 that they are afraid to release it.

While Valve is certainly making a ton of money with Steam and micro transactions, it seems like quite a leap to think that’s what’s getting in the way of releasing Half Life 3. The second point seems even more outlandish, claiming that fan backlash to the Mass Effect 3 ending caused Valve’s third game to get pushed to a lower priority status.

Marc Laidlaw, science fiction author and Valve writer, responded to questions about the rumors from fans, helping to debunk the rumor:

I can’t comment on Valve’s internal process, but it sounds like someone is trolling. Anonymous sources have been posting speculation masquerading as inside knowledge since the Half-Life 1 delay in 1997. If it’s any comfort, please rest assured that in my experience at Valve, fear is the last thing that would ever drive a decision about what to work on.

He goes on to talk about the story and how tied in with the gameplay it is – it’s not something that can simply be written in a novel or explained so that people know how it ends. It has to be experienced as part of the game.

Does this mean we will see Half Life 3 in the near future? Probably not. But to write it off completely because of some silly trolling rumors also seems like a lost pursuit. Half Life 3 might never come, but we said the same about The Last Guardian, and a proper FFVII remake. So who knows, maybe Valve is just waiting for the right time, with the right team of developers and designers to make it the game that everyone has been waiting for.
